The Zelda and Mario games that could only be played for two hours a day for a month

One of the first consoles that had an online option was the Super Famicom, which in Japan launched a small modem called Satellaview. It came out in 1995, had content until 2000, and is now a fantastic paperweight.

In 1995, the Internet sounded like something from the future. With Windows 95 about to change everything, the world was gearing up to change and adapt. And of course, video games were part of that change. One of the first consoles that had online capability was the Super Famicom, which in Japan released a small modem called Satellaview. It was launched in 1995, had content until 2000, and now it’s a fantastic paperweight.

The future in the past

Satellaview managed to attract 100,000 subscribers in Japan, a significant number considering that what it offered wasn’t groundbreaking by today’s standards: the gaming system itself was a game where you could create an avatar, buy items, play minigames, and participate in contests. In a way, it was a bit like Mark Zuckerberg‘s metaverse, but with pixelated graphics.

The most curious part is that all the games released for Satellaview were lost forever. And there were quite a few notable ones: remakes of ‘F-Zero’, ‘Kirby‘, or ‘Super Mario Bros’, a fishing game created by the author of ‘Earthbound’ that ran for eight episodes from April to November 1997 and eventually appeared on Nintendo 64. One of the few that got saved.

Thanks to the service, you could even read free magazines, listen to audio commentary, and ambient sounds. However, nothing can surpass the legacy of ‘BS Zelda no Densetsu,’ a remake of ‘The Legend of Zelda‘ that was “broadcast” for two hours a day, divided into four chapters, one per week, in 1995. The game was not just the classic Zelda; it also featured a narrator who provided hints and narrated the game’s plot, creating a unique storytelling experience.

This Zelda had 16-bit graphics, different dungeons, a smaller world, and replaced Link with a boy wearing a backward cap or a girl with red hair, the mascots of Satellaview. There was even a second version of the game in 1996, ‘BS Zelda no Densetsu MAP 2’, before it disappeared. It was a different time; nobody cared much about preserving things before they were lost, but it’s still a shame that both this game and ‘BS Super Mario Collection,’ which included everything from cinematics to live music and live commentary from Mario and Luigi, succumbed to the ineffable passage of time. Sigh.

The reason why Mario doesn’t carry a gun (or transform into a centaur)

Well, it was one of the ideas that Shigeru Miyamoto and his team had in the first ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Then, luckily, they changed their minds.

Imagine going to pick up ‘Super Mario Bros Wonder‘ and discovering that the leaked videos so far are false, and it’s actually an FPS in the Mushroom Kingdom where Mario has to reload his AK-47, shoot it at the Goombas, and say phrases like “Swallow lead, mushroom.” Sounds strange, doesn’t it? Well, it was one of the ideas that Shigeru Miyamoto and his team had for the first ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Fortunately, they changed their minds later on.

VisualBoyAdvance DOWNLOAD

Super Mario Gun

The initial ideas for video games are not always the best, and the proof of that is what they were trying to make ‘Super Mario Bros‘ be: “For a long time, the controls were A to shoot bullets, B to skate, and up to jump,” Miyamoto commented, making it clear that originally, our portly plumber was a killing machine.

Fortunately, we didn’t end up seeing Koopa Troopas bleeding in a corner because they changed their minds when they realized that this seemed like a children’s game: “The bullets eventually became fireballs. Originally, we thought of having a shoot’em up screen where Mario jumps on a cloud and shoots enemies, but we removed it because we wanted to focus on platforming. The bonus screens that take place in the sky are what remained of that idea.” Thank goodness, Shigeru.

It’s not the only power that Nintendo has denied us over the years (fortunately): ‘Super Mario Bros 3’ originally had the idea of turning Mario into a centaur, but when it came to competing against the raccoon tail, it ended up losing out. At least some sketches were made, so we can see what such a bizarre yet wonderful idea would have looked like.

If he can now become an elephant at will, why not revisit the centaur idea after all? The idea of the gun, frankly, is a much worse one. Don’t be offended, Miyamoto.

The Curious Case of the Missing Super Mario Bros Game: Where is the Surprise?

Oreo has prepared a limited packaging with 16 different designs based on the Italian plumber and his companions.

What was left for ‘Super Mario Bros’ to conquer the world completely? It is one of the most recognizable characters worldwide, its movie is the only one of the year that has surpassed one billion dollars in box office revenue, and there isn’t a single piece of merchandise, from folders to lunch boxes, official cosplays, and, of course, all kinds of video games, that doesn’t feature his mustache front and center. There was only one castle left to conquer: the Oreo cookie castle.

ZSNES DOWNLOAD

Yummy-mia!

Said and done: Oreo has prepared a limited edition packaging with 16 different designs based on the Italian plumber and his companions. We’ll have everyone from the typical allies to enemies like Boos, Koopa Troopers, Piranha Plants, and objects like the mushroom, the fire flower, or the super star, and of course, Bowser. It would be great if the filling of these cookies were peach-flavored, paying homage to ‘Peaches,’ but we’re not expecting miracles. In fact, Peach is nowhere to be found, sadly. And neither is Waluigi. They’re cowards.

The craze has been such that, although they will be available in stores, Nintendo has already proposed pre-ordering them, as if it were the new ‘Super Mario Bros Wonder.’ Just think about it: you’re pre-ordering… Oreo cookies. Yet, not only the good-hearted people eager to have fun have done it, but also the Usual Suspects. I mean, those who want to ruin the good vibes by reselling the cookies at impossible prices.

More specifically, on eBay, they were found for up to $75, an absurd amount considering that they were already on sale, and paying that price only meant getting the pack a couple of days earlier. Oh well.

Earlier, we mentioned that Peach doesn’t appear on the cookies, and there’s a reason for that: Bowser has kidnapped her again. No, this is not a joke, it was stated in the official press release along with a game you can play by scanning a QR code. And if you ask us, it’s not on par with ‘Super Mario Odyssey’: it involves stacking as many hero cookies as possible on top of a Bowser cookie on the edge of a glass of milk until he is defeated. In other words, making him fall into the glass. Uh.

Oreo promises big surprises for those who defeat Bowser, but it feels like stretching it too far. We were already fully on board with “Mario Oreo cookies.” By the way, there is still no news of their arrival in Spain, but considering that they are being sold as collector’s items, disregarding their expiration date, don’t be surprised if they show up in various places at the next Expomanga. Mamma mia!

Gaming Shock: Bowser’s True Age Unveiled – He’s Part of the Millennial Generation!

Nintendo has given the exact date of his birth, and it is best not to think about it too much because he was four years away from being born in the first NES game. That’s right: we were sending lava to a baby project. oops.

Surely you’ve wanted to know how old Bowser, the main villain of the ‘Super Mario Bros’ series, is in order to send him a little birthday gift: a Peach kidnapping here, a Super Mushroom there, a record deal to replicate the success of ‘Peaches’… Well, don’t worry, because Nintendo has revealed the exact date of his birth, and it’s best not to dwell on it too much because he was still four years away from being born in the first NES game. That’s right: we were throwing a baby-in-progress into the lava. Oops.

Mari0 DOWNLOAD

With my star we’re gonna rule

A new Nintendo video showing how to create an account on Nintendo Switch briefly revealed the villain’s date of birth: Do you think he’s a thousand-year-old monster who keeps coming back to life? Well, you might be surprised, because he was born on February 5, 1989. So, he’s 34 years old, and when he appeared in the first ‘Super Mario Bros’ game for NES in 1985, he wasn’t even an idea in his parents’ minds yet. Someone should let Marty McFly know, there’s a temporal mess.

As for Bowser Jr, he was born on March 3, 2010, 13 years ago… even though his first appearance in ‘Super Mario Sunshine’ was in 2002. Eight years before coming into the world, he was already causing trouble on Isle Delfino. Talk about precocious children. Of course, fans are already speculating and trying to understand how this paradox is possible, and they’ve deduced that ‘Super Mario Sunshine’ takes place in 2020, and ‘Super Mario World’ in 2013. Yes, surely Nintendo is very concerned about this and it wasn’t just a coincidence.

And considering that Bowser could already talk and move when Mario was born, we can deduce that our mustached hero was born in the ’90s and is reaching his thirties now (even though there are games that indicate they have been fighting for over thirty years). It’s not set in stone, of course: Homer Simpson has been stuck at 35 since 1987, and nobody has found it strange. It’s probably best not to dwell on it before going to sleep tonight: nobody likes to dream about temporal paradoxes involving giant lizards, after all.

Nintendo Shows Commitment to Diversity: Super Mario Bros Enemy Name Changed

Now, with the film about to be released in theaters in Japan, there is a character who has changed his name… Luckily

He may not be the most beloved character in the entire ‘Super Mario Bros‘ saga, but he was there from the beginning. Literally. Foreman Spike, Mario’s enemy in ‘Wrecking Crew‘ (which came out a few months before the first of the platformers) has only appeared in three games before making the jump to the Mario brothers’ movie. But now, with the film about to be released in theaters in Japan, the character has changed his name… Luckily.

No more Mr. Bad Guy

Spike’s gaming life consists only of ‘Wrecking crew’, ‘Wrecking crew 98’, a sequel for SNES that never left Japan, and ‘Mobile Golf’, a game of the sport in question for Game Boy Advance starring Mario in which he was an unlockable character and that, indeed, did not leave Japan either. Perhaps that’s why, after not appearing in 21 years, his supporting role in Super Mario Bros: The Movie has given a lot to talk about.

Among other things, because it disproves a common theory, which is that he simply became Waluigi. It is a theory that makes sense: the mustache and the nose are practically the same. This role posed another problem more important than fan theories for Nintendo: the character, who has been called Blackie in Japan since 1985, will now be renamed Spike, according to a tweet posted by Nintendo, very concise but leaving no room for doubt.

“The name in ‘Super Mario Bros: The Movie,’ which will be released on April 28, 2023, will also be ‘Spike.'” Nintendo has not provided any explanation on the matter but it doesn’t take a sharp eye to figure out that ‘Blackie’ may have racist overtones. Rather than a move to equalize marketing across countries, it seems like an attempt to watch their backs. It is no less true that the character remained forgotten in the collective memory, so it does not seem that it will cause more than a few complaints.

Of course, we will have to see what happens with the enemies that are already called Spike, born in ‘Super Mario Bros 3’ and that have already lasted until today. At the same time, the ‘Super Mario Bros’ movie has already grossed almost 900 million worldwide and does not seem to be willing to slow down the accelerator. Come on, whatever name it has, we have Nintendo for a while. Ya-hoo!

Top 10 NES games of all time

From the field of Hyrule to the Mushroom Kingdom, these games defined a generation.

NES

The Nintendo Entertainment System was a monumental video game system. After Atari caused the great video game crash, consumers weren’t ready to buy back into video games again. However, after games like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda hit the mainstream, anybody who was anybody had to have one of those giant gray boxes.

For this list, we looked at the games that made the NES the legend it is today. If your favorite game didn’t make this list, let us know in the comments below!

Top 10 NES games

10. Metroid

Metroid

Back in the day, video games had a simple concept: you take your character from the left side of the screen to the right side. Metroid took that concept and threw it out the window. In this game, you navigate a labyrinth with bad guys and power-ups hidden everywhere. Once you get some of those power-ups, you can circle back to areas you’ve already explored and then uncover more secrets hidden in this world.

On the NES, there were dozens of games that mimicked Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. However, there was only one Metroid and it is still untouchable.

9. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game

Turtles

The first Ninja Turtles game on the NES is pretty bad, to say the least. It is notoriously difficult and almost impossible to control. Despite that game being a massive flop, the Ninja Turtles were sucking down quarters at the arcade like crazy. Nintendo decided that the best course of action was to port the arcade game to the NES.

Guess what? The game was phenomenal.

The game had much of the same moves and mechanics as the arcade game. The best part of it was that you didn’t need to put in a quarter every time you lost!

8. Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse

Castlevanie

The Castlevania games on the NES were notorious for being difficult. However, people who loved these games were willing to brave through the relentless difficulty to reach the best parts of the game. From the gothic ambiance to the phenomenal musical scores, there is plenty to like about the games.

Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse had all of the best parts of the previous Castlevania games, but included another great feature: three new characters. The new characters provided a breath of fresh air from the typical whip-toting Belmont boys.

If you’re willing to play one of the most difficult games on the NES, you won’t be disappointed.

7. Contra

Contra

UP UP DOWN DOWN LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT B A START

If you’re a gamer, you know better than anyone that the above cheat code is the secret to “eternal life.”

Well, not really. The above cheat code is the famous method players frantically inputted on their controllers to start Contra with 30 lives. Contra is easily one of the best shooters of all time. You play as a ‘roided-out soldier that’s out to thwart an alien-invasion with nothing but the gun strapped to his shirtless back.

The game was notoriously hard, and the 30-man code was absolutely necessary for first-timers. Pick this game up if you’re ready to lock and load. Also, don’t be embarrassed if you need more than 30 lives.

6. Punch-Out!!

Punch-Out!!

Punch-Out!! is a right-of-passage. You’re not much of a gamer unless you’ve watched Glass Joe hit the canvas like a sack of bricks. Punch-Out!! was one of those games that really united kids back in the day. These were the days before you could just look up on the internet how to beat a boss. Kids were reliant on playground knowledge. If you didn’t know how to beat King Hippo, you sometimes needed to have your buddy come over to show you that you needed to punch him in the mouth at the right moment.

Punch-Out!! is a legendary game. It hasn’t lost any steam in the time it has already spent on this planet, and we don’t expect it to any time soon.

5. Tecmo Bowl

Tecmo Bowl

In the beginning, there were jocks and there were gamers. Then, by a twist of cruel fate, there were video games about sports. Your average gamer doesn’t want to play football, baseball, or soccer when they have the option to stop an alien invasion or save the princess from a dragon. As a result, there was a huge divide in video games between those that play sports games and those that despised their existence.

That’s where Tecmo Bowl came in. Sure, it’s a sports game. However, it’s one hell of a good game. It’s easy to pick up and jump into, and playing it is wildly addictive. Nowadays, there are games like Madden that have insanely huge followings. Madden and its following would not exist if Tecmo Bowl had not paved the way.

4. Tetris

Tetris

There are games on here with wild storylines, gameplay, and trend-setting mechanics. Then there is Tetris. Tetris is a brutally simple game. If you hand the game to a three-year-old, they could figure it out in a matter of minutes. However, Tetris is brilliant because it is so simple. Any person of any age can play Tetris and be great at it. It doesn’t take any sort of special skill or knowledge to be a Tetris champ; it just takes practice.

Tetris has gone through a bunch of cosmetic changes throughout the years, but the core game has mainly remained unchanged.

Do we really need to sell this game any more to you? Tetris has been around for this long already, and we won’t be surprised if it outlives every game on this list.

3. Mega Man 2

Mega Man

The phrase “ahead of its time” is used so much these days that it has lost a lot of meaning. With that being said, Mega Man 2 was so wildly ahead of its time. It’s downright crazy just how complicated of a game the developers were able to fit on an NES cartridge. The game feels like it came out one or two generations earlier than it was supposed to.

Each level is so iconic from the enemies, to the music, to the boss battle at the end. Even after you beat the game, all you want to do is start over again and replay those same wonderful iconic moments.

Need more convincing? Here’s a mariachi band playing the music from the game:

2. The Legend of Zelda

ZElda

What can we really say about The Legend of Zelda that hasn’t been said already? It’s one of the most iconic games ever made on top of being one of the best games ever made.

It has all of the best qualities of the rest of the games on this list, and it has so much more. So, instead of talking about why the game is great, we’ll talk about why the game is not the best game on the NES in our opinion.

The Legend of Zelda is cryptic, to say the least. It was a game that made you have to buy a subscription of “Nintendo Power” in order to beat it. There are things in the game that you couldn’t figure out on your own in a million years. The Legend of Zelda is quite literally a living legend, but it is not our top pick.

1. Super Mario Bros. 3

Mario 3

It’s 1989. You dragged your parents to the movie theater to see “The Wizard.” With not much time left in the movie, you’ve realized what your parents probably knew 10 minutes into the movie: “The Wizard” really sucks.

However, all of a sudden the movie takes a turn. It looks like they are showing a new game that you’ve never seen before. How could this piece of garbage movie have such a hidden gem inside? Well, it did. And man-oh-man did it blow our minds:

Movie aside, Super Mario Bros. 3 is a masterpiece. It is simply a cut above the rest, proving to be a once-in-a-lifetime type of game. You do the same stuff you do in the previous two games, but this time there’s more everything. There’s fresh mechanics, new challenges, new power-ups, enemies you’ve never faced before, a new level to the story, and a jolt of electricity in it that makes you hungry for more.

10 best video game heroes of all time

From the intergalactic spaceships to the fields of Hyrule, these video game protagonists are absolutely iconic!

Uncharted

No video game is complete without a good protagonist. Sure, cool settings and tense plotlines are great and all, but at the end of the day, all the best stories are about compelling characters. This is even truer in the case of video games; as players, we don’t just watch the stories of these characters, we experience them.

Over the years, the world of gaming has seen more than its fair share of strong heroes, and it’s hard to narrow down such a crowded field to the 10 best. That said, here’s our lineup of gaming’s 10 most iconic heroes.

10 best video game protagonists

Soap MacTavish- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Soap beat out Lara Croft from Tomb Raider and Dante from Devil May Cry by just a hair.

When Soap first arrives in the original Call of Duty 4, he’s about as green as it gets. Taken under the wing of the gruff, no-nonsense Captain Price, Soap soon grows into an elite veteran soldier.

In Modern Warfare 2, he’s the commander of his own special operations unit, no longer the raw recruit we first guided through a SAS training run.

By Modern Warfare 3, Soap is a hardened soldier; as players, one of the most gratifying parts of the Modern Warfare series is taking that journey along with Soap. Like him, we start as recruits and end up as hardened professionals.

Gordon Freeman is a man of many talents. Not only can he complete equations complex enough to make your head spin, but he can also stop an alien invasion almost singlehandedly using little more than a crowbar.

Gordon is a scientist-turned-reluctant warrior, and it’s that experience that separates Gordon from the typical gruff FPS protagonist. His background lets us experience different perspectives and encounter some even weirder science along the way.

With more than 100 games spanning multiple systems, it’s undeniable that this intrepid blue adventurer has left his mark on gaming. Mega Man is an originally mild-mannered android that reluctantly takes up arms to defend the world from (usually robotic) threats.

With challenging levels, unique boss battles, and a host of different powerups, Mega Man takes a simple formula and perfects it. He’s a classic hero in every sense of the term.

When we first met Ezio, it was hard to imagine that the mischievous playboy would one day become the most elite and respected assassin of all time. However, throughout several games, he becomes exactly that.

Though the Assassin’s Creed series has its share of strong protagonists, as players we essentially get to live out Ezio’s entire life, from youth to old age. He’s one of the richest and most well-developed characters in the series, and he left an indelible mark on fans around the globe.

Big Boss is as much a philosopher as he is a warrior. Not content to merely fight the wars of others, Big Boss makes it his life purpose to change the world. Though he starts as a young idealist and a true hero, series veterans will know that he eventually ends up as one of the main antagonists of the series.

The Metal Gear Solid prequels allow players to experience Big Boss’s complicated and tragic backstory, and in true Metal Gear fashion, eventually, realize that he may not have been a villain after all.

Heck, his clone is Solid Snake who is another great character that almost made this list. Big Boss is the definition of an iconic character, and he’s a staple in gaming history.

From choosing your appearance, your squad, or how you act in a particular scenario, there are almost unlimited possibilities when it comes to how you want to experience Commander Shepard’s journey. This intrepid adventurer never gives up, no matter what the forces of darkness throw at him. He may sometimes come off as inexperienced, but that just makes him all the more relatable. His tenacity and courage leave an indelible mark on players and fans.

We were close to putting Samus Aran on this list, but Link and a certain someone else from the Super Smash Bros. roster won out overall!

Tetris gets a battle royale mode for some reason

Tetris 99 is being adapted into Tetris Royale for mobile and it is going to be crazy!

Tetris Battle Royale

As the likes of Apex Legends and Fortnite: Battle Royale continue to take the world by storm it is clear that the battle royale formula is here to stay. It seems there is just something about squaring up against players all over the world that is attractive to us gamers.

It doesn’t all have to be guns, bombs, and explosives though. Battle royale games don’t have to be about fights to the death. Yes, it is all about the last gamer standing, but that doesn’t mean everybody else has to be dead, they could simply be eliminated. When you think about it like this, there are many more titles out there that could get the battle royale treatment.

We recently covered an unofficial Super Mario battle royale game, which pitched players against each other in a race to the end of a level from Super Mario Bros. Unfortunately, with Nintendo being Nintendo, this game has already been taken down, but we have some news of an official battle royale game, based on an old Nintendo classic, that is coming to mobile soon.

Tetris 99 is being adapted into Tetris Royale for mobile

When the Nintendo Switch launched the world was blown away by how much power was packed into Nintendo’s little touchscreen device. Despite all that power though, and a plethora of impressive Switch games, one of the most fun and addictive games to hit the latest Nintendo handheld has been Tetris 99. For those that haven’t played it, it’s a manic and modern update on the classic Tetris formula.

Tetris 99 pits you against 99 other Tetris players in a battle to be the last player standing. The dynamics of the war come from sending garbage blocks to your various opponents whenever you clear multiple lines at once. You also have to deal with similar attacks coming your way from all the other players around you. The action is fast, the action is crazy, and the action is coming to your mobile.

Tetris Royale is the mobile port of Tetris 99 that is coming to both Android and iOS soon. As well as the standard 100 player mode from Tetris 99, Tetris Royale is also getting a few other game modes and features to keep mobile players satisfied. These include daily challenges, power-ups, customization options, and the chance to earn and use special boosters in battles.

Wrapping up

There is no word about pricing or when Tetris Royale will hit the Play Store and App Store. However, according to a press release from games company N3twork, who’ve teamed up with The Tetris Company to develop Tetris Royale, the game will go into beta testing this year. This means that we have a maximum of six months to wait before the crazy fun of Tetris 99 hits our mobiles in one form or another. Beware though, this one could be extremely addictive.

Mario Royale: Can you defeat 99 other Marios?

Ever wanted Mario to jump into the world of Fortnite? This is the next best thing!

Mario royaleJust when you thought the Mushroom Kingdom had nothing left to offer, one game developer decided that Mario needed the Fortnite treatment.

Enter Mario Royale: the game where you play the classic Super Mario Bros. in a battle royale format with gamers around the world. Rather than working together to make it to the end, you instead are competing with each other, and can even kill each other.

The creator took to YouTube to discuss the creation of the game:

The project took him only about three weeks. Rounds can last a few minutes as players work to reach the end, or a few seconds if you really stink at the game.

Mario Royale

How to play

When the game starts, you and other players are thrust into a random world from the original Super Mario Bros. Once you land on the first stage, the game begins.

The goal of the game is to reach the end to defeat Bowser. The first three people to beat Bowser get first through third place, while the rest run into a pit of lava. The game is over once everyone either finishes or dies.

Power-ups are a hot commodity. There isn’t a Mushroom or Fire Flower for everyone on every stage, so if you find one, it is probably the only one there. If you find a Starman, you can use it to kill other players. You can also kill players using a well-placed Koopa shell, or screw up their jump sequence by knocking into a block.

Mario royaleWrapping up

The game is still in its early stages and is still being patched, so you can probably expect to see some updates. Until then, have fun!

While everyone’s hating on Sonic, let’s look back on the Super Mario Bros movie

Scared about Sonic? Let’s remember 1993’s Super Mario Bros movie.

After decades of disappointments, expectations for video game movies are mercifully low. Though dozens of video game movies have been made, the number of not just good, but decent video game movies can be counted on one hand. Games that seemingly would translate into excellent movies like Assassin’s Creed, Street Fighter, and Resident Evil were butchered into unrecognizable cash grabs that were seemingly terrified of their source material. To date, the single live-action video game movie that has a ‘Fresh’ score on Rotten Tomatoes is “Detective Pikachu.”

Will ‘Sonic’ be a blue, blurry disaster?

Even with expectations at an all-time low, general audiences could not possibly have been prepared for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog trailer. If you’ve somehow missed it, here you go:

This trailer didn’t just set the internet on fire, it transformed it into a blazing hellscape. Sitting at 32 million views and nearly 700k dislikes, the trailer was brutally mocked by fans and nonfans alike. Sonic’s bizarre, not-quite-realistic-but-not-quite-cartoony redesign was by far the most common source of mockery. From his dirty-looking fur to his tiny spaced out eyes, to his unnerving uncanny valley proportions, Sonic’s “realistic” design became the subject of thousands of hilariously mean-spirited memes and tweets.

Whoever decided to give Sonic human teeth needs to be psychologically evaluated

The online uproar was so intense that Paramount actually delayed the movie from its original release date of November all the way to February in order to redesign the iconic character. Funnily enough, this seems to be the first time ever that a major movie studio has actually listened to the internet mob (think of all the petitions that rabid fans create to recast superheroes).

While it’s good that the filmmakers are redoing Sonic’s horrid design, the same probably can’t be said about the rest of the movie. Instead of featuring the whimsical loop-de-loops and checkered plains of the video games, the movie takes place in a lifeless realistic setting. Even worse, the movie borrows the same soulless “What if a cartoon entered OUR WORLD?” plot of live-action cartoon movies like “Alvin & the Chipmunks” and “The Smurfs,” a subgenre that hasn’t even been popular or successful in nearly a decade. They even used the tired “cartoon character and human meet and scream AAAAAAAAAAAHHH at each other” gag.

At the very least, the casting of Ben Schwartz as Sonic is actually an inspired choice, as his cocky attitude fits Sonic like the gloves he isn’t wearing. Most notably, Jim Carrey (cast as Sonic’s nemesis Dr. Robotnik/Eggman) seems to have left his recent pretentious antics behind to give a refreshingly 90s performance in this movie.

It’s sad that Sonic’s first leap to the big screen is such a lifeless monstrosity, as the franchise has already been the butt of jokes and scathing memes for years. However, history has shown us that even beloved video game franchises are not immune to bizarre live-action movies, including the most cherished video game series of all time: Super Mario Bros.

A look back at 1993’s Super Mario Bros movie

super mario bros movie

We’ve seen this movie dozens of times we still can’t quite believe that it exists. Seriously, just watch the trailer and try to make sense of what’s happening.

Yes, you just saw Bob Hoskins team up with John Leguizamo to fight Dennis Hopper’s King Koopa. The craziest part is that when this movie came out in 1993, there were no audience expectations of what a video game movie should be. At the time, the thought of adapting something as low brow as a video game into a movie was considered preposterous. After the movie’s release, critics, filmmakers, and general audiences were left scratching their heads, having gained no new insight into the future of video game movies. For those who haven’t seen the movie, allow us to (attempt) to explain the film.

At the beginning of the movie, a short animation plays that explains how the meteorite that killed the dinosaurs actually created an alternate dimension called Dinohattan where people evolved from dinosaurs rather than apes. The plumbing brothers Mario Mario (Bob Hoskins) and Luigi Mario (John Leguizamo) travel to Dinohattan as they try to rescue Luigi’s love interest Daisy (Samantha Mathis). Daisy has been kidnapped by King Koopa (Dennis Hopper) because she has the last shard of the meteorite, which Koopa needs in order to merge the dimensions under his iron fist.

If that sounds confusing, that’s because it is. The plot only resembles the paper-thin story of the games if you squint really hard and look from every angle. But you need to keep in mind that there was no groundwork as to what a video game movie should be, much less for a live-action adaptation of a story that’s literally just “rescue the princess.”

The filmmakers deserve some credit for taking a mainstream family-friendly property like Mario and trying to make something unique, surreal, and dark. Unfortunately, the film can’t hit the mark as a dark comedy due to panicked executives lightening the tone of the film and making it more family-friendly. This clash is most apparent when you consider the contrast between the dystopian set design and the script.

At the time of the movie’s release, gritty urban reimaginings of beloved franchises were extremely popular, including 1989’s “Batman” and 1990’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.”

Acclaimed production designer David Snyder (who helped invent cyberpunk by designing the sets of “Blade Runner”) designed Dinohattan to be a primal, aggressive, and oppressive satire of modern urban life. Snyder enjoyed the opportunity to design the hellish city at multiple levels, as he was limited to the street level while working on “Blade Runner.” He referred the bloodthirsty reptilian art style as “New Brutalism,” reasoning that since the residents of Dinohattan evolved from dinosaurs, they would be significantly more primordial and savage than human beings, with their architecture and city design reflecting their aggressiveness. Speaking on the setting of “Super Mario Bros,” Snyder said: “We’ve designed this film with the idea of looking at New York while on some mind-altering drugs.”

Before shooting began, worried studio executives demanded the film’s script be rewritten to be more childlike. Unfortunately, the dinopunk sets were already built, which, as impressive as the set design is, leads to a jarring clash of tone between script and visuals in the final film.

Even with its weird tonal inconsistencies, Super Mario Bros is not an awful film, despite what Bob Hoskins thinks. It’s a bizarre and ineffective adaptation of a beloved property sure, but if they renamed the characters and called the movie “Dino Punks” or something, then the film could have been hailed as a cult classic today. The cast all put on charming performances and have chemistry with one another, the effects were outstanding at the time (and still hold up today, especially the animatronic Yoshi), and the surreal world of Dinohattan is something to behold.

What will the audience think?

This brings us to the million dollar question: will “Sonic the Hedgehog” overtake “Super Mario Bros” as the most infamous video game movie ever made? We think it’s possible, though both films attract a ton of negative attention for completely opposite reasons. “Sonic the Hedgehog” appears to be a movie that is incredibly safe, soulless, and stale, yet it completely disregards the source material. There is not a hint of artistry or passion for the property evident in the trailer; the film might as well have been made in a factory.

“Super Mario Bros,” on the other hand, is ambitious almost to a fault. While the film angered fans by not resembling the game at all, the crew bravely set out to create the next “Ghostbusters;” a dark, surreal comedy-adventure that was quite unlike anything audiences had ever seen. The clear amount of ambition and talent that went into “Super Mario Bros” has caused audiences to slowly warm to it in recent years. We can’t expect the same will happen for Sonic.
