The CEO of PlayStation Studios confirms that PlayStation will continue to have exclusives, although with some caveats

Hermen Hulst, CEO of PlayStation Studios, has confirmed that the company will release at least one flagship single-player game each year, starting in 2025. This news comes in a context where the PlayStation 5, launched almost five years ago, has been marked by a strategy focused on games as a service, which has failed on various fronts. This has led to a notable shortage of exclusive single-player titles on the console, raising concerns among fans.

Big Releases on the Horizon

Among the upcoming releases, Death Stranding 2 stands out, which will be exclusive to PS5 and is scheduled to launch soon. Another important game is Ghost of Yotei, set for October 2, 2025. However, not all anticipated titles will arrive in the short term; projects like Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine and other developments at Naughty Dog are still in early stages. Fans may have to wait some time before seeing these promising releases in action.

Sony’s strategy has faced criticism, especially after the cancellation of several games-as-a-service projects from studios like Bluepoint Games and Bend Studio. Naughty Dog also chose to halt development on The Last of Us Online to focus on creating high-quality narrative experiences. This decision underscores the importance the company places on single-player games, although recent cancellations have raised doubts about the future of certain studios within PlayStation.

On the other hand, launches like Marathon and Fairgame$ are planned, scheduled for 2026, in an attempt to diversify the game offerings. Despite the cancellation of more than seven titles, Sony continues to bet on games as a service, indicating a clear intention to balance its catalog with titles of different kinds. With several projects in the works, patience seems to be the key for players in this transition phase.

The developers of Helldivers 2 acknowledge that they made a serious mistake by requiring a PSN account

Helldivers 2, the highly anticipated cooperative action game, began its commercial journey with great success in February, but faced a drastic decline in player reception due to a series of changes that displeased the community. The main point of controversy was the decision to require all players to log in to a PlayStation Network account, even those playing on PC. This change generated an immediate negative reaction that led Sony to reverse its decision in just three days.

They had to face the big boss of Sony, Hermen Hulst

At its lowest point, Helldivers 2 reached an alarming score of only 19% on Steam, a clear indication of widespread dissatisfaction among players. Shams Jorjani, current CEO of Arrowhead, referred to this period as his “summer of pain,” and explained that he had to present the situation to Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, acknowledging that there were no short-term solutions, but there were long-term plans to improve the game.

To address the crisis, Arrowhead implemented a 60-day recovery plan that culminated in a significant update, which included improvements to grenades and turrets, along with the long-awaited inclusion of anti-tank mines. Thanks to these efforts, Helldivers 2 achieved up to 76% positive reviews on Steam.

Jorjani expressed his admiration for the trajectory of No Man’s Sky, another title that faced a similar situation of a failed launch. The game’s story has inspired Arrowhead to work hard on updates to regain the community’s interest. Despite the initial difficulties, the atmosphere in the studio has improved, and the team feels optimistic about the future of the game and its player base.

Sony undergoes a new restructuring and appoints a new permanent CEO

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a significant restructuring in its leadership, with Hideaki Nishino taking on the role of CEO in a context where the company has faced a challenging period following Jim Ryan’s departure. This move marks the return to a single presidency model, with Hiroki Totoki replacing Kenichiro Yoshida as president and CEO of Sony Group Corporation. The decision is framed in the need to simplify decision-making and provide clear direction to the PlayStation team.

The co-CEOs are over: Sony’s CEO is Japanese again

In a statement, Nishino highlighted his interest in expanding the company’s franchises and taking technological innovation to the next level. His commitment is based on a vision of growth, focusing on strengthening the PlayStation ecosystem and connecting with a passionate and diverse user base. “We want to continue expanding our most beloved franchises,” said Nishino, who has been a key figure in PlayStation’s development strategy throughout his career at Sony.

For his part, Totoki emphasized his interest in building on the legacy of his predecessors and creating new value in all areas of the company. This leadership change comes less than a year after the company introduced a dual leadership model, which failed to provide the necessary stability. The fragmentation in leadership had raised doubts about the future of Sony and its games-as-a-service strategy, as it had become a hot topic in the industry.

The reorganization also implies that Hermen Hulst, who had shared leadership during the dual period, will continue as CEO of the Studio Business Group, overseeing PlayStation’s development studios and ensuring the integration of their franchises’ adaptations into film and television. This renewed focus suggests an intention to rejuvenate Sony’s organizational strategy at a time when the video game industry is rapidly evolving.

PlayStation believes that AI is a tool, but not the future of video games

Few topics are as discussed as AI. Partly because we use this term to refer to many very different things. By not making the distinction, we combine easily justifiable uses with others that are not so much. This makes it necessary to constantly provide explanations. But this is what happens when certain people want to promote certain types of technologies that have unethical uses. They want to muddy the discourse. Something that Hermen Hulst, co-CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, seems to understand.

In an interview with the BBC, Hermen Hulst has said that AI has the potential to revolutionize video games. However, he wanted to clarify that he does not believe the human factor will disappear. A crucial part of development will continue to come from the human side.

Specifically, he pointed out that he believes AI-driven experiences can be very innovative. While handcrafted things, with thought behind them, will continue to be what gives substance to video games. This implies that AI can help relieve the burden of more tedious tasks or assist with some things that are technically impossible for humans, but it makes no sense to have AI do what humans can do better by virtue of being human: being creative.

AI is just another tool, and nothing more? That’s what the data says

In fact, it seems that the use of AI is already commonplace among video game studios. According to a study by the research firm CIST, 62% of studios in 2023 were already using AI for their workflow. Especially in everything related to concept, asset creation, and worldbuilding. Although practically none did so with materials that would be used in the final result.

That is why, although it seems that AI is the present, it is not in the sense that many people believe it will be the future. And while it is a useful tool, everything indicates that the human factor will continue to be the most important part of all creative work.
