Sony's new game is strange, creepy, and dodging literal bullet rains is incredibly fun

Sony has not been shining with its exclusive policy lately. Anyone who has a PlayStation 5 knows that well. However, that doesn’t stop them from occasionally releasing an interesting game here and there that catches attention. Especially when it comes to single-player games. And while it may not make as much noise or attract as much attention as Marvel’s Wolverine, Sony’s big title for the general public this year, we must highlight the company’s great title for this season: Saros. Sony is not shining with its exclusive policy lately. Anyone who has a PlayStation 5 knows this well. This does not prevent them from occasionally releasing an interesting game that catches attention. Especially when it comes to single-player games. And while it may not make as much noise or attract as much attention as Marvel’s Wolverine, this year’s game from Sony with more cachet for the general public deserves recognition: Saros.

Pure Housemarque

Saros is an action game from the Finnish studio Housemarque. Specializing in developing arcade-style video games, they were acquired by Sony in June 2021, becoming part of PlayStation Studios. Since then, they have leveraged their experience in creating games with a great kinetic feel and tremendous visual and sound spectacle in favor of something different. Action games with roguelike elements that, while you can see their arcade lineage, are closer to what a more general audience might be interested in.

Their first game under the Sony umbrella was Returnal. A third-person shooter with roguelike and bullet hell elements in which we played as an astronaut stranded in a lost world without knowing what had happened. With elements of psychological horror, intense difficulty, and excellent sound and mechanical design, it was praised by critics and a specific segment of the audience, but it was not a huge commercial success. Selling less than a million copies on PlayStation 5 before its arrival on PC in February 2023, its problem was that it was too difficult and unforgiving, with very long sessions, for the average player.

Saros is a spiritual successor that continues Returnal where it left off in many ways. Its setting is also space-themed, it has elements of psychological horror, it is a third-person action game with roguelike and bullet hell elements, but this time there are some changes. The game is designed to be more accessible.

A kinder version of the classic

To begin with, in Saros the runs are shorter. With each game lasting between 20 and 30 minutes, dying doesn’t feel as punishing. You live and die quickly, making it so that after each boss we return to our base to do something important: improve our character. This offers another advantage over Returnal. If we feel that we cannot progress, the game provides enough mechanics for us to gradually reduce the difficulty. Something that was not present in Returnal.

This may make veterans of Returnal feel that Saros is more of the same, but a bit toned down. Except for the inclusion of the shield. Now, in addition to bullet storms filling the screen, we have a shield that allows us to absorb them. But with the particularity that it has a limited use and we will have to absorb bullets to recharge energy and use a powerful secondary shot, forcing us to plan well when to dodge and absorb those shots.

Additionally, if it becomes too easy or too difficult for us, from a certain point in the game there are modifiers that allow us to adjust certain elements of the game. Something that will change the amount of resources and rewards we obtain in the process, but will also help us achieve an experience closer to what we want.

Returnal had the problem of being too niche a game to be a blockbuster, even lowering what they were already doing at Housemarque. Saros makes compromises while doing new things with its formula to reach a new audience. And although Sony may not have marketed it well, it is an accessible game for all kinds of players. Especially those who enjoy third-person shooters and action games. Because while Saros may seem intimidating, and Returnal certainly was, it is a very interesting game that you should give a chance.

Scheduled for release in 2026, the title stands out for offering a combat system that allows up to eight fighters on screen, controlled by two players, which promises to enhance the gaming experience and attract genre enthusiasts.

A game with something for everyone

Unlike Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, Marvel Tokon presents itself with a fresh and unique aesthetic, as well as an innovative approach to team battles. Iconic characters like Storm and Dr. Doom are treated with artisanal detail, allowing players to enjoy their abilities strategically.

One of the most interesting aspects of the game is its accessible design for both newcomers and veterans, facilitated by specific buttons that allow for special moves and unique abilities. This does not mean that experienced players are at a disadvantage; all heroes are equally effective in combat, which adds an additional layer of strategy to the game.

Marvel Tokon seeks to create a long-term commitment with players, planning online events and post-launch content, reflecting PlayStation Studios’ desire to offer a lasting multiplayer experience. However, the key to the game lies not only in its gameplay but also in its ability to remain relevant and appealing in a competitive market.

If the developers maintain the quality observed in the initial beta, Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls has the potential to become a classic within the genre, offering players both immediate fun and an incentive to return over time.

The CEO of PlayStation Studios confirms that PlayStation will continue to have exclusives, although with some caveats

Hermen Hulst, CEO of PlayStation Studios, has confirmed that the company will release at least one flagship single-player game each year, starting in 2025. This news comes in a context where the PlayStation 5, launched almost five years ago, has been marked by a strategy focused on games as a service, which has failed on various fronts. This has led to a notable shortage of exclusive single-player titles on the console, raising concerns among fans.

Big Releases on the Horizon

Among the upcoming releases, Death Stranding 2 stands out, which will be exclusive to PS5 and is scheduled to launch soon. Another important game is Ghost of Yotei, set for October 2, 2025. However, not all anticipated titles will arrive in the short term; projects like Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine and other developments at Naughty Dog are still in early stages. Fans may have to wait some time before seeing these promising releases in action.

Sony’s strategy has faced criticism, especially after the cancellation of several games-as-a-service projects from studios like Bluepoint Games and Bend Studio. Naughty Dog also chose to halt development on The Last of Us Online to focus on creating high-quality narrative experiences. This decision underscores the importance the company places on single-player games, although recent cancellations have raised doubts about the future of certain studios within PlayStation.

On the other hand, launches like Marathon and Fairgame$ are planned, scheduled for 2026, in an attempt to diversify the game offerings. Despite the cancellation of more than seven titles, Sony continues to bet on games as a service, indicating a clear intention to balance its catalog with titles of different kinds. With several projects in the works, patience seems to be the key for players in this transition phase.

Bungie has indefinitely postponed the launch of Marathon, its highly anticipated extraction shooter, which was scheduled for September 23. This decision is due to negative feedback from initial testing and reactions on social media, which were not as expected. This move is crucial for PlayStation Studios, which seeks to establish new game service franchises to ensure player loyalty in a competitive environment.

A delay that will ensure the game is released in the best possible condition

The importance of Marathon lies in Sony’s need to diversify its offerings, especially after Naughty Dog’s focus on single-player games. With the high costs associated with triple-A developments, the company has decided to explore titles that can generate continuous and sustainable revenue. This context makes the success of Marathon vital for future PlayStation projects, particularly with the launch of new Xbox and Nintendo consoles, which have sparked great interest in the market.

Despite this setback, Bungie clarifies that Marathon has not been canceled; instead, they will take the necessary time to make improvements based on the feedback received. Changes are being considered in gameplay, the experience both solo and in duos, and the depth of the game’s universe. However, the challenges are significant, as Bungie was already facing a difficult phase before this announcement.

In 2024, PlayStation began operating as two separate entities, one dedicated to games and the other to hardware and infrastructure, to maximize its performance and mitigate the impact of failures in one area on another. This approach aims to ensure that the success of Marathon helps support the upcoming projects of PlayStation Studios, a critical issue today where competition is on the rise.

PlayStation demonstrates in its State of Play that Japan remains a superpower in video games

Last night one of the most anticipated events of the Summer Game Fest took place. We all expected to see what Sony would offer in its State of Play. PlayStation demonstrates in its State of Play that Japan remains a superpower in video games

Last night, one of the most anticipated events of the Summer Game Fest took place. We all expected to see what Sony would offer in its State of Play. Although they have some interesting games on the horizon, 2025 has not been a good year for the Japanese company. And it doesn’t seem like it will be great in the future. At least from what we could see last Wednesday, June 4, around 11 PM.

It must be admitted that, although there was something for everyone, it was a very Japanese State of Play. Very focused on third parties and for those whose tastes are more based on arcade-style games, or with a more video game approach, and less on narrative or cinematic video games. This may disappoint some people who expect a different approach from Sony after God of War, Uncharted, and The Last of Us, but the truth is that it was an exceptional State of Play in terms of pace and content. And for that reason, we have selected the best announcements so you don’t miss anything.

Lumines Arise

There are only three games that have been able to be as iconic and brilliant as Tetris in the world of puzzles: Puyo Puyo, Meteos, and Lumines. The latter will receive a new installment, as we have learned thanks to Sony, named Lumines Arise. Its premise is to be the same idea as always —grouping four or more symbols in a square or equivalent shape using pieces made up of combinations of one or two symbols— but now with more particles and even more spectacular graphics.

Clearly drinking from the tremendous success of Tetris Effect, it seems that the game is heavily inspired by Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s previous game. But let’s not kid ourselves either. Tetris Effect already drew a lot from Lumines. So we can expect to see what the result will be when it releases this upcoming autumn of 2025 for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR.

Pragmata

Initially announced at E3 2020 for 2022, Pragmata has had a tumultuous development. So much so that we haven’t heard anything about it for 2 years and many people suspected it had been canceled. Nothing could be further from the truth, as the game has shown signs of life. And it is spectacular.

Highlighting some absolutely stunning graphics, where the quality of the design of the main girl stands out especially, the game seems pure Capcom. Resident Evil, but with more action and in a science fiction setting. Something we really can’t say no to. But to play it, we will still have to wait. Because Pragmata will be released in 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Romeo is a Dead Man

Goichi Suda, better known as Suda51, is one of the great authors of video games. Punk, unrestrained, with no intention of pleasing anyone, he always does what he wants, how he wants, and he doesn’t care if you like what he does. That’s why, if you like it, you’ll love it. And that is the case with Romeo is a Dead Man, a madness about a man trapped between life and death due to a time paradox that shattered the space-time continuum and now he must jump between dimensions to hunt down dangerous fugitives.

It promises to be violent. It promises to be hilarious. And it promises to be vulgar. But it is also deep, human, and a game like no other you have ever played. Because that’s what Goichi Suda’s games are about. However, to play it, we will have to wait until 2026, when we can enjoy it on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Silent Hill f

If there is a horror game that is highly anticipated this year, it is Silent Hill f. Written by one of the most celebrated authors of Japanese horror, putting his own spin on one of the most beloved franchises in the industry, it is impossible for this to go wrong. Especially now that we have finally seen gameplay. And it did not disappoint.

Dark, violent, and very psychological, it seems we will have to go through real hardships to progress in the game. Exactly what we want in a Silent Hill. Additionally, we have been given something even more important. Its release date. The game will be released on September 25 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. And keep a close eye. Because if there is a game in this article that is a contender for game of the year, it is this one.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles

In Europe, we never got to play one of the most celebrated games from the US and Japan within the Final Fantasy franchise. Moreover, it is not a game from the main franchise. Because Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the brightest games that has come from Square Enix and, even today, it still has one of the most impressive stories and one of the most satisfying battles in Tactic RPG.

This remastered version also has two good things. It will include an improved version, with full voice acting and updated graphics, but also the original version for those who want to enjoy what was playable on PlayStation. This time, with the acclaimed translation that the PSP version had. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles will be released on September 30 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.

Nioh 3

Team Ninja is in a very sweet spot, with many projects on the horizon. And now they have decided to add one that many fans were waiting for: a new installment of their most beloved franchise. Nioh 3 will take us to feudal Japan to face a tremendously challenging souls-like game where, as it seems in the trailer, we will have to choose between protagonists. One is a samurai, similar to the gameplay style of previous installments, and the other is a shinobi, with a style more akin to that of Tenchu.

With the demo now available, it is possible to try the game to see how well it works. And if it will live up to its previous games in the franchise. Even if we will still have to wait until 2026 to enjoy it, we will be able to play it on both PC and PlayStation 5.

Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls

But the big announcement has come from Marvel. Although not only from Marvel. Arc System Works in collaboration with PlayStation Studios has announced Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. This is a 4 vs 4 tag team fighting game, where we choose four characters and alternate between them to fight. Closely following the style of previous games from the company, such as Guilty Gears or Dragon Ball FighterZ, it has a spectacular graphic style and a frantic pace that promises to captivate fighting game fans.

We have seen some of the playable characters, such as Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Star-Lord, Ms. Marvel, Storm, and Dr. Doom. However, like most games, we will still have to wait. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls will be released on PC and PlayStation 5 in 2026. But given the promising look of all these games, it seems that PlayStation has plans, and the wait is well worth it.

Sony has begun to release its exclusive video games on PC, a strategy that satisfies both players and the company. However, these releases often come years after their debut on PlayStation 5. During a recent interview with Sacred Symbols+, the former head of PlayStation Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, shared that this decision was driven by him, highlighting Sony’s interest in expanding its market. The company hopes that PC players, by trying its exclusive titles, will be tempted to acquire a PS5.

The profitability of porting to PC has proven to be significant for Sony. Yoshida emphasized that these processes represent little effort and low costs for the brand, thus generating additional revenue. This becomes a smart strategy in an increasingly diversified video game landscape, where competition is intensifying.

The Chinese market: a priority for Sony

A crucial aspect that Yoshida highlighted is the importance of entering emerging markets, such as China. Although the console player base in this country is currently relatively small, the PC market is constantly growing. To reach this new audience, the launch of games on PC presents a valuable opportunity. “To reach the audience in countries like China, it is crucial to launch games on PC,” Yoshida commented, emphasizing the relevance of this strategy in Sony’s future growth in regions where console gaming has not yet taken off.

As the video game industry evolves, it is clear that Sony is adapting its tactics to remain competitive, which could change the perception of the exclusivity of its titles in the future. This initiative to launch versions of its games for PC connects the brand with a broader audience while strengthening its position in the global market.
