In March 2025, ChatGPT became the most downloaded app worldwide, reaching over 46 million downloads, surpassing Instagram, which had similar figures. This is the first time since 2013 that a service outside the realm of social media has taken the top spot in this category, highlighting a significant shift in app consumption dynamics.

Ghibli-style photos, the beginning of this rise?

According to the report from Appfigures, ChatGPT was the most downloaded app on iOS, accumulating 13 million downloads, while on Android it ranked third with 33 million. This phenomenon could indicate that iPhone users are seeking answers that they cannot find in Siri, reinforcing the integration of OpenAI’s model into Apple’s voice assistant.

The spectacular increase in downloads is due, in part, to the opening of new features that allow for image generation, resulting in an overwhelming demand that led the app to reach five million users in just one hour. However, OpenAI’s situation is complex: despite its success in downloads, the company faces difficulties in monetizing ChatGPT, as most users still use the free version, making the high operating costs unsustainable.

OpenAI has around 10 million paid subscribers, although this is still insufficient. The competition with more affordable alternatives, such as Google Gemini, along with the rising cost of operating artificial intelligence systems, poses an uncertain future for the long-term viability of ChatGPT. The race for monetization becomes crucial, and any move regarding the free offering could substantially affect demand. In this environment, OpenAI will need to find a delicate balance to ensure its financial sustainability.

“This message will self-destruct,” that’s how Instagram wants to revolutionize social media

I have a theory: social media has already reached its limit and basically doesn’t know what to invent to keep its audience hooked with stories that don’t really add anything to the experience but give you the feeling of constant renewal. A perfect example is Instagram, which after going from focusing on photos to Stories and from there to Reels, now doesn’t know what the next move is (until it’s time to copy another social network, at least).

I’m going to grade you

Now, Instagram will allow adding notes in Reels and posts that will be deleted after three days. And you might be thinking, “What are you talking about?” Well, do you remember when a few months ago they allowed adding daily stories that appeared as thought bubbles, which we all used for a week and never touched again? Well, it’s the same technology, but applied to Reels and posts.

So, to make it completely clear: these are comments that will be outside the comment section and whose privacy you can choose: only your best friends or mutuals will be able to read them, and at any time -before the three days pass- you can delete them without any problem. The comment will appear as a sticker on top of the content, with the idea that users can use Instagram in more different private ways than with direct messages.

What Instagram users want is to see what their friends are saying about something without having to scroll down to the comments section? It could be. After all, a maxim of modern marketing is that people don’t know what they want until they have it. Luckily, the author will be able to decide to remove this update altogether and prevent strangers from filling their Reel or their post with private notes. My personal bet: completely forgotten in three weeks.

La aplicación de TikTok para matar a Instagram ya está aquí para algunos afortunados.

TikTok has begun rolling out its Instagram rival, TikTok Notes, to selected users on Android and iOS in Australia and Canada.

A few weeks ago we talked about this topic, as it is going to be one of the most important apps of the year without a doubt. After becoming the most used app in the world, TikTok is going straight to finish off Instagram by attacking where it hurts the most: an app that imitates the content and functionality of the Meta application.

In them we see that headlines can be written for images on top of captions, a feature that Instagram does not offer natively.

Aside from these minor tweaks, the app is very similar to Instagram, which is a change from the usual. For years, Meta has been the one copying other social media platforms like TikTok with Reels and Snapchat with Stories. With TikTok Notes, however, TikTok seems to be copying again.

An influencer falls off a bridge while taking a selfie. And she’s not the first…

The influencer crossed the barrier, went to take a photo… and fell from a height of 50 meters, an accident that several people witnessed.

One of the most fun things in the world is to see influencers as soon as they stop recording their vacation shots or eating and the camera turns off, because suddenly you see how their expression, their life, their supposed happiness also turns off. But of course, when facing the phone you have to be the happiest, the funniest, the craziest, the best. And that’s how things happen, that if one has to fall off a bridge, well, they fall. That’s the life we have chosen.

May bridge

In this case it was Inessa Polenko, who had almost 10,000 followers on Instagram and used to take selfies continuously. In fact, it was the last thing she did in a small town in Georgia (United States) called Gragy. Polenko, 39, was looking for places where she could take new photos and videos for her social media when she decided to pass through a dangerous fenced area so that no one would make the mistake of crossing.

The influencer crossed the barrier, went to take a photo… and fell from a height of 50 meters, an accident that several people witnessed from a distance. Upon arriving at the scene, and despite their attempts to revive her, it was impossible to prevent her death. Normally, this would serve as a cautionary tale to prevent future deaths, but strangely enough, it creates a call effect. She is not the first influencer to die while trying to take a selfie where she shouldn’t… and probably won’t be the last.

In fact, in several countries they have already created areas where taking selfies is prohibited to prevent falls and unnecessary deaths. It’s great to have the coolest feed on Instagram, but please, you probably don’t need to risk your life for it.

Instagram Direct Messages can now be edited

After a long wait by many users who wanted to have that feature, Instagram has updated its Direct Messages so that all users can edit the messages they have sent. This is a functionality also present in another Meta service like WhatsApp, which has allowed editing messages since mid-2023.

With this, Instagram will allow users to correct typos in newly written messages, modify the message if the recipient was incorrect, or change a message if one is not convinced of the content being sent. This is, in this way, an improvement in quality of life for those users who wanted to be able to edit sent messages. Messages could already be deleted before, so that factor does not influence as much for the new functionality.

Editing MD on Instagram

It has been Meta on its official blog who announced the arrival of this functionality to the services available on Instagram. Thanks to this, users will no longer have to delete a message completely when they want to make any changes to what they had written.

To do this, simply hold down the message you want to edit, and then the option “edit text” will appear among the available options, allowing you to rewrite the message as many times as you want within 15 minutes from the first send.

The Convergence of Meta

It is quite common for Meta to mimic functions from one application to another when it perceives that the result is positive. In this case, it can be seen that the function of editing already written messages was added to WhatsApp in 2023 and is a widely used tool by those users who want to make modifications to their texts, beyond deleting them completely. But this system of implementing improvements in parallel is by no means a novelty.

An example of this is the replication of successful formats on Instagram to be used on Facebook as an added incentive. This can be seen in the previous addition of Reels on Facebook, or the ability to also publish stories on Mark Zuckerberg’s original platform in the same style as Instagram, although with some reduced functions. Likewise, this format is also present on WhatsApp, with the so-called “statuses”, which are also used by millions of users.

The Google Pixel copies the Samsung Galaxy: great news if you use Instagram

The Samsung Galaxy S24 was the first to support Ultra HDR photos on Instagram, allowing you to showcase pictures taken with the enhanced camera…

Google Pixel devices will be able to upload and view Ultra HDR photos on Instagram, just as Samsung announced a few months ago for its Galaxy phones. This announcement is part of Google’s March update, which will be released for compatible Pixel 7, Pixel 8, and Pixel Fold phones starting today.

Samsung’s Galaxy S24 was the first to support Ultra HDR photos on Instagram, allowing you to display photos taken with the device’s enhanced camera in full color and contrast. But now, Pixel owners will soon be able to do the same, as well as capture and share 10-bit HDR videos on Instagram Reels.

The arrival of new features next week will also bring an addition called “Circle” to search for Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. This feature allows you to long-press on the navigation bar and then draw a circle around the words or images you want to search on Google. Circle to Search arrived on S24 and Pixel 8 earlier this year.

Google is also expanding its existing call search features. And with it comes a tool that you can use when a caller is silent, but only in English for users in the United States.

When touching the new “hello” pop-up, Google Assistant will ask the caller to start speaking to find out why they are calling. Google Assistant can also notify the caller to wait if you can’t answer the call on screen immediately. This feature will be available on Pixel 6 or newer devices, as well as Pixel Fold.

Finally, the new health tracking features coming to the Pixel Watch add compatibility with pace training, heart rate zone training, automatic training mode, and more.

Meta wants Google and Apple to be the ones managing parental controls for apps like Instagram

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has stated in a hearing held in the United States Congress and has once again rejected the idea that social media companies should be responsible for managing parental control systems for the use of apps like Facebook and Instagram by minors. Trying to shift the blame, the executive suggested that the problem should be solved by app store providers, such as Apple and Google.

This is not the first time that Meta raises this idea. As TechCrunch reports, the company presented a proposal last November in which it argued that Apple and Google should do more to strengthen the safety of minors, requiring parental approval when users between the ages of 13 and 15 download certain applications.

At that time, Meta’s global head of safety, Antigone Davis, said that this would be the “best way” to support both parents and children, and that the solution should be applied “across the board”, where “all apps are governed by the same consistent standard”.

In the hearing that took place this week, Zuckerberg suggested that Meta‘s own investigation indicated that parents wanted more control over apps through mobile devices and app stores that families use.

“I don’t think parents should have to upload an identification document to prove that they are the parents of a child in each of the applications their children use,” said the CEO, presenting a proposal that would eliminate the need to upload legal documents, which would be an improvement in user privacy.

“As far as I understand, Apple and Google already require, or at least Apple already requires, parental consent when a child makes a purchase within an app,” Zuckerberg said, referring to Apple’s requirement for apps on its platform to use their own payment methods. “So it should be fairly straightforward to pass a law that requires them to ensure parents have control every time a child downloads an app and gives consent for it.”
