The first Resident Evil could come to PC

El Resident Evil original, de 1996, podría llegar a PC según ha desvelado el PEGI al darle una clasificación de edades que, por supuesto, es +18

Capcom is not willing to let a single Resident Evil go unnoticed and escape the present. We don’t blame them. Most of these games are excellent and have aged in an enviable way. With the few changes they make with the remakes, they adapt them perfectly to modern sensibilities, turning them into new versions that do not replace the originals.

That doesn’t mean that the originals don’t have a little place in our hearts. Not without reason, they are pioneers of modern survival horror games, although it’s true that they have controls that can be a bit tough at times, they are still fabulous on their own. That’s why any news related to a return of the original Resident Evil games is always a cause for celebration. And that’s exactly what has happened.

Resident Evil has received a PEGI 18 rating for PC in Europe. If this seems strange to you, even stranger is that we’re talking about the first Resident Evil, the one from 1996, and that the date it was registered was June 18, 2024. This suggests a possible re-release of the game that we still know nothing about, but that we’re certainly looking forward to.

This, however, has a pretty distinct peculiarity. Resident Evil was already released on PC at the time. Originally released in December 1996 in Japan and arriving in North America and Europe throughout 1997, it was one of the first and only console games of that time that also appeared on PC. In any case, this edition of the game isn’t available on any modern platform, so it is no longer possible to enjoy it. At least not legally, unless we bought it 27 years ago.

Since it is not available on Steam, GOG, or any other digital platform, we understand that this PEGI rating must be for a future PC release. Even so, Capcom hasn’t announced anything about it yet, but it’s expected that they will provide more concrete information in the coming weeks or months.

Red Dead Redemption could arrive on PC for the first time in 14 years

A dataminer has discovered in the code of the Rockstar launcher that it is possible for Red Dead Redemption to arrive on PC for the first time in its history.

Red Dead Redemption is now 14 years old. The first installment of the franchise was released in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, becoming one of the most unexpected successes of its time. Even though it was backed by Rockstar, the company’s non-GTA games have never made as much noise as the franchise that made them billionaires. But its perfect blend of open world, western setting, and narrative made it a success. Which would later be enhanced with its second installment, in 2018.

The problem is that Red Dead Redemption would never be released on PC. For some reason, Rockstar decided to exclude the second largest gaming platform in the world, second only to mobile phones. Something that may be about to change.

A dataminer named Tez2 has published new code from the Rockstar launcher. Although we would normally be more cautious in affirming the veracity of the content, in this case, it is extremely explicit. Because what he has found in the code is a quote that says “Travel through the expanding territories of the American West and Mexico in Read Dead Redemption, and its zombie horror expansion, Undead Nightmare, now playable on PC”.

Of course, this is not a confirmation that it will happen. Even if it seems unlikely that it won’t happen. Especially considering that Red Dead Redemption already received ports to PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch last year. That doesn’t exclude the possibility of it being a quite disappointing release, as it lacked any kind of graphical improvement, was technically limited, and its price was excessively high for what the public expected. Something that also makes us cautious about its release, if it is finally confirmed.

In addition, Rockstar has always had a peculiar relationship with the PC. GTA5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 were only released on PC a year after their initial release, which would be a move in line with the company’s current policies. Something that makes it even more likely that we will soon be able to embody John Marston again, one of the great heroes of the video game. With one of the most shocking plot twists in the medium.

They have created a computer program that records everything you do on your PC and it is terrifying

You can ignore certain applications or areas of the screen, and only record one screen regardless of your settings.

We’ve all been there: you remember reading or seeing something on your PC, but all attempts to find it again are useless. Repeating previous searches doesn’t work, and the browser history is also useless.

You’re not sure where you saw that conversation, that photo or that song on your computer and in the end you start wondering if you just imagined it.

In one of the first episodes of Black Mirror, titled “The Entire History of You”, the technology of “grains” allows people to record and replay their memories on demand.

This episode, along with the Rewind app on macOS and FOMO (fear of missing out), has led a developer to create a new open-source application.

The personal PC memory searcher

Windrecorder, the “personal memory finder”, records everything you see and do on your screen and allows you to rewind and search through it.

The application uses FFmpeg to record screen activity in 15-minute fragments and then indexes them using a local Windows OCR API and image embedding.

You can ignore certain applications or areas of the screen, and only record one screen regardless of your settings, although support for multiple monitors is planned.

The application allows you to view daily and periodic screen times, as well as circadian summaries, and can generate monthly light boxes.

You have to take into account some disadvantages: FFmpeg can occasionally consume a large amount of memory, and instant rewind is not an option. You have to wait for each 15-minute video fragment to finish recording before you can rewind it.

The recording is not encrypted, but if you are concerned about what you do on your computer being leaked to the Internet, the good news is that everything is managed locally, nothing is uploaded to the cloud. There is also no support for AI/ML, although it is a possibility for the future.
