Apple AirPods are spying on people

Another privacy scandal for Apple.

Apple Airpods

With the iPhone 7 came the death of the headphone jack and the birth of the AirPod. The wireless earbuds are good enough, we suppose, but their reception has been a largely mixed bag. The iPhone X has a Live Listen feature right on the front screen (if you swipe down, it’s the ear icon) and again we have to wonder whether its inclusion is a good thing.

You can even access it right on the top menu.
Live Listen helps you to better hear anything near your iPhone.

What is Live Listen?

Live Listen allows for iPhone users with hearing impairment to hear people across a room, in a noisy environment, or even tune into a TV without having to crank up the volume. All they need to do is enable the Live Listen feature on their iPhone and sync it to their hearing aid (or AirPod) and their iPhone turns into a directional mic.

In Apple’s own words, “with Live Listen, your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch becomes a remote microphone that sends sound to your Made for iPhone hearing aid. Live Listen can help you hear a conversation in a noisy room or hear someone speaking across the room.”

Will people with hearing issues really be able to use this tech to help in their daily lives? Apparently, they already have. Apple has always been known for their intuitive, user-friendly gadgetry and the Live Listen feature is no exception. There’s even an option to adjust volume on the fly, and set it as a preferred Accessibility Shortcut like we mentioned earlier.

Pair it to your control center like so
Access Live Listen with a simple downward swipe.

No good deed goes unpunished, however, and for all the help that this feature is giving to the hearing-impaired, it’s also creating some more questionable uses.

The problem with Live Listen

Live Listen works well – maybe too well. Users have discovered that if you leave your iPhone in another room, it still transmits sounds straight to your AirPods. The result is that you can now use Live Listen to pick up conversations you wouldn’t normally be a part of: Eavesdropping.

The feature works from up to 15 meters away, which makes it very easy to conveniently leave your phone a couple rooms over and still remain privy to what others are saying. The Twitter user above also commented that Live Listen could be used as a makeshift walkie-talkie, or even to cheat on school tests.

Apple still promises privacy

It’s 2019 and we’re all very quick to be afraid and point fingers at anything that threatens our privacy. The great data breaches and leaks of late have made us more fearful than ever. Apple is still standing resolute, however, and maintains their stance that privacy is of the utmost importance to them. Besides, can you really hold Apple accountable for something that you could have already done with a standard recording device? If you’re that concerned you could always just disable the Live Listen feature like this:

How to turn off Live Listen

1. Open your iPhone Settings
2. Go to General
3. Press Accessibility
4. Open MFi Hearing Devices
5. Tap on the name of your hearing aid or AirPod
6. Select End Live Listen

You can manage your own phone, but not other peoples'.
Press this to end all feed to the synced AirPods.

Is this a helpful feature that will help the hearing-impaired from this point forward? Or should Live Listen be removed from all future models of iPhone? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, and stay tuned for the latest in tech news.

Apple rumored to be developing Netflix-like gaming service

Is Apple about to make a huge splash in the gaming industry?

Rumors are swirling that Apple is in the early stages of developing a subscription-based service for games, similar to Netflix’s model for movies and shows. There are few details about the service beyond this, as we don’t know if this service is being developed for mobile devices, home computers, or both.

Making a gaming service is a puzzling move on Apple’s part for multiple reasons. Even though Apple basically created the mobile gaming market with the App Store, they’ve never really gone all in on the gaming industry. Though Apple has placed tight quality control restrictions on the App Store, for the most part, they’ve been content to lay back and get their (sizable) cut from in-app purchases. Additionally, though Macs have received increased support from game developers over the years, the vast majority of PC gamers play on either Windows or Linux. Apple does not seem to mind this as their core Mac audience usually buy their devices for business or creative purposes. With this in mind, it’s relatively safe to assume that Apple’s upcoming gaming subscription service will focus on mobile gaming.

What would an Apple gaming subscription look like?

A subscription for mobile games wouldn’t make much sense, as the most popular mobile games by far are free titles that heavily utilize microtransactions. Why would anyone pay to play free games?

To make the subscription price worth it, Apple would have to offer some sort of premium content. Games could lock special levels, characters, or power-ups behind the subscription service, incentivizing hardcore players into subscribing. This model would make financial sense, as research has shown that mobile games make their money not from casual players, but from “whales.” Whales are hardcore players who pour tons of money into freemium games. Locking content behind a subscription would encourage whales and completionists to make the dip. There’s also the possibility that instead of locking content, the subscription would give a small amount of money to spend in every game included in the service. This would give players a brief glimpse into the premium side of popular games, encouraging them to spend more money after their subscription credits run out.

Another possibility is that Apple could focus on “premium” iOS games rather than free to play ones. These games are often console quality and cost around $10-$20, but don’t feature additional microtransactions. Examples of these games include Civilization VI and XCOM: Enemy Within. Apple could allow subscribers to play these games at no additional cost, which would encourage people to play these games who would have never before considered them due to their price.

By combining these two ideas, it’s possible that Apple could have a success on their hands. The subscription hinges entirely on how it is embraced by whales. If whales don’t see value in paying for a subscription, the service will fail.

9 best YouTube channels for JRPG fans

If you love JRPGs, add these YouTubers to your watch list!

Kingdom Hearts

From Legend of Zelda to Persona, JRPGs span a wide range of genres and storylines that have captivated western audiences for decades. With continued popularity increasing in staple Japanese franchises like Kingdom Hearts and Fire Emblem, a large YouTube community is dedicated to talking about this incredibly diverse genre. While some YouTubers tend to focus on a specific JRPG franchise, many others cover much broader topics. Here are some of the best YouTubers to watch whether you’re a die-hard JRPG fan, or just looking for a new game to try.

Best YouTube channels for JRPG fans

9. Superbutterbuns

While she is primarily a Twitch streamer, her YouTube channel is filled with hilarious commentary and guides. Not only are her guides informative, they are also quite funny. If you’re truly a beginner gamer looking to understand a specific JRPG, then she is the perfect choice to go to for both the entertainment and information. She covers a few games that aren’t JRPGs, however, that seems to be her primary genre.

8. Game Theorists

While certainly not exclusive to JRPGs, the Game Theorists are a popular channel of gamers that will do research into some popular fan theories behind many video games. They take the time to explain each theory, while also giving their personal takes on its legitimacy. Some of their most popular videos cover controversial theories on the Mario and Zelda series. Many of the theories end up relating to Nintendo or Nintendo franchises in some way.

7. Adam Koebel

Adam has one of the higher upload rates of YouTubers in this genre. He also is one of the few gamers who vlogs his experiences, rather than simply showing his gameplay. He is heavily involved in the gamer community, attending many conventions and vlogging his experience at them. He’s a good option to watch if you’re looking for a social YouTuber.

6. The JWittz

Originally popular for his unique and informative Pokémon videos, The JWittz has since broadened his content to include all things Nintendo. He does frequent Let’s Plays of popular games, while also explaining some of the deeper mechanics of the game he’s playing. Unlike most Nintendo-focused channels, however, he is more than exclusively Let’s Plays, and has a lot of “Top 10” videos and news coverage. He has also recently partnered with Facebook, and has been created large amounts of content for his page there.

You also may recognize him from our top 5 Pokémon YouTubers list, as he has been one of the most influential PokéTubers on the web.

5. Chuggaaconroy

Similar to the JWittz, Chuggaaconroy is known for his frequent coverage of Nintendo games. He tends to focus on older games, however, and almost exclusively does Let’s Plays. Some of his older videos have speedruns and other unique concepts that make them entertaining to watch along with his new content. The games he plays are often forgotten and underappreciated, allowing you to discover many hidden games through his content.

4. HappyConsoleGamer

Compared to the many Let’s Players in the JRPG YouTube community, it can be nice to have a channel that is mostly dedicated to reviews instead. HappyConsoleGamer is a great person to watch if you haven’t quite decided on a game yet, and you’re looking for a deep review on how good it’s going to be beforehand. While he doesn’t exclusively review JRPGs, they tend to be his main focus. In particular, he is known for his love of Dragon Quest, which is a fairly undiscussed series, despite its popularity.

3. HCBailly

Not the most popular YouTuber by view-count, but most JRPG fans are familiar with him in some way. HCBailly has been making videos on JRPGs longer than almost any other YouTuber out there. He typically does Let’s Plays, and he covers an incredibly large variety of the genre. He plays both classic JRPGs, as well as modern day ones. If you’re looking for a general Let’s Player to watch, then he is worth checking out, as his commentary is very involved in the subject matter. He’s also great for younger audiences. With a bi-daily upload schedule, you’ll never run out of content to watch with HCBailly.

2. Cendril89

This YouTuber is quite the hidden gem. Despite his low subscriber count, he continues to have a frequent upload schedule and an infectiously positive attitude. He often streams his Let’s Plays on YouTube, which makes his videos longer than most. This can be great for gamers who wish to play along with him in their own copy of the game he is playing. As he usually does blind playthroughs, it can be like having a new experience with an upbeat friend.

1. Lockstin & Gnoggin

His name may not be the most familiar, but his popular content certainly is to many. A recent popular series he did that has become an incredible success is “Every ___ type Pokemon explained.” As with this series, he frequently will give in-depth and researched explanations on some of the more obscure and interesting topics surrounding the genre. He’s also created some interesting videos on the Tales series, a popular franchise that hasn’t been covered by any popular YouTubers until recently.

So you’re getting married. Congratulations! There’s so much to do when you’re going to get married, and some wedding-planning chores are more enjoyable than others. One thing that should always be fun is putting together your wedding gift registry. Instead of spending hours in your local big box stores with a scanner in your hand, consider using Amazon’s wedding registry feature. It’s simple, easy to set up, and it lets you access literally millions of products without leaving your couch.

How to create a wedding registry on Amazon

Creating your Amazon wedding registry

Go directly to the Wedding Registry page, or choose “Wish List” from the “Lists” pull-down menu located at the top right of any Amazon screen. From there, click on “Wedding Registry,” displayed along the top of the screen.

Once you’re on the registry page, click on the “Create your Registry” button. Now you’ll be prompted to enter some information. This includes you and your partner’s name, your shipping address, and the details about your event. Get as specific as you want. You can include your wedding date only, or you can add the venue, number of guests, and more.

Once you’ve entered all your information, you can adjust the settings of your registry. Choose whether you want all your gifts shipped directly to you from the sellers, or tell your guests that you’d prefer your presents sans gift wrap. (Wedding protip: Get those gifts delivered to your home. You don’t want to worry about cramming everything in your car the night of your wedding.)

You can also edit your privacy settings, choosing who can see the registry. Here, you’ll have 3 choices:

  • Anyone can see your registry.
  • Only people who have a link can see the registry.
  • Only you can see the registry.

The last setting is nice for when you’re still working on your gift registry and aren’t quite ready to share it with anyone yet.

A few more things you’ll have to decide on include whether you’d like your registry to be searchable on Amazon partner TheKnot, and whether you want email updates or discount offers.

Once you’ve entered all the information, click the “Submit” button. Now you can start adding stuff to your registry. Anything on Amazon is fair game for your registry. You can enter specific search terms such as “hot pink oven mitts” or just browse by category.

When you see something you want to add, just click on the “Add to Wedding Registry” button under the checkout box. You must be logged in for this button to appear.

A few final tips for creating a wedding registry on Amazon

  • It can take several hours for your registry to show up on TheKnot.com if you selected that option.
  • You can change any of the information or settings on your registry at any time by visiting your registry page and clicking on “Manage Your Registry,” then selecting “Your Registry Information.”
  • You can visit the “Registry Suggestions” page to see registry favorites and items recommended just for you.
  • The shipping information you provide will be kept confidential, and will not be displayed to people who visit your registry.

Now all that’s left to do is plan your wedding, pay for it, and try to enjoy your big day without Uncle Steve wrestling away the microphone because he’s got a decades-old ax to grind.

Best Pinterest Tutorial: What is it and how to use it

Curious about Pinterest? Here’s how to start using the super-popular site.

When it comes to boosting creativity and sharing ideas, it’s challenging to find a better app than Pinterest. Many businesses and freelancers are using it for their own sites, while others are pinning URLs for others with similar interests to read.

You may be wondering what Pinterest is and how to use it, or what does Pinterest do? We’ll show you how it works and some excellent tips for making boards and sharing them.

What is Pinterest and what is it used for?

In essence, Pinterest stands for pinning interests to a board. It’s like a discovery channel that uses visual and text elements for inspiration and creativity. When you find a site or idea you like, you can quickly save it to your Pinterest channel for your followers to follow.

Pinterest is one of the easiest social media platforms available. It’s mostly used by people that want to share online content, such as music, recipes, lyrics, and so on. You’ll also find it ideal for organizing your ideas and thoughts on one page.

pinterest

How does Pinterest work?

All you need to do is enter a site with ideas that you like and pin the link to a board. These categories help to separate content so it’s easier for your followers to read and view. If you add the Pinterest extension to your browser, it’s as simple as clicking on the Pinterest logo for a quick save.

What is the purpose of Pinterest?

The primary purpose behind Pinterest is storing ideas and visual content that you can save on boards. There are millions of online pages you can store, and it acts as a shortcut on your channel. Anyone following special hashtags or topics will see your pin appear on their daily feed. They can also follow your boards.

Tutorial and tips: starting on Pinterest

Now that you have a better idea of what Pinterest is, we’ll share some tips on how to use it. There are a few easy steps to get started, after which you can get pinning away!

Creating your profile

After entering your email address and creating a password, you’ll enter more basic information like your gender, preferred language and country.

Pinterest screenshot 1

You’ll then be prompted to install the browser button. This button allows you to save things to your Pinterest account that you see while browsing online outside of Pinterest.

Pinterest screenshot 2

Imagine that you’re planning a birthday party for a friend and while browsing the web, you come across an awesome layout for a dessert table. With the browser button, you’ll be able to save the link to this page to a Pinterest board full of ideas for the party that you can come back to and reference later, so we definitely recommend installing it. Once installed, a little Pinterest icon will show up in your browser’s toolbar for you to click whenever you want to save a webpage, and another page will open that explains how to save a link.

Pinterest screenshot 3

Before Pinterest cuts you loose to get sucked into the black hole of architecture designs and Etsy wedding dresses, they ask you to choose a few things that you like in order to get an idea of what to display on your feed. You can choose as many as you like, and the cool part is that whenever you search for something, Pinterest will remember and curate more pins like it.

Pinterest screenshot 6

Customizing your profile

Pinterest will save your name as the email address you use to sign up, so to change this, just click the three grey dots in the upper right-hand corner of your web page, then click on ‘edit settings.’  Under ‘profile’ you can change your name, add a photo, and a biography.

Pinterest screenshot 4

You can also navigate to other areas where you can also edit your email address, password, and privacy settings. For example, if someone were to Google workout tips and you don’t want your fitness board to show up,  you can toggle that option off.

What is a pin on Pinterest?

Pins work like bookmarks to other sites where you found interesting information or images. If people are looking for specific content, they can search for topics, and the results may show your pin. You can also use pins to link to your site and share your latest products.

What is a board in Pinterest?

When you want to separate your pins into categories, you create Pinterest boards. It helps organize your content and thoughts in a more efficient way that people can more easily follow. It’s especially helpful for businesses that have different types of products to showcase across various industries.

Pinterest screenshot 7

Socializing on Pinterest

Another great feature is that you can share pins or entire boards to people that don’t have Pinterest accounts. Just click on a pin, and click on the icon with an arrow pointing up. Then you can send it to someone directly by email, or you can post it on social media accounts.

Pinterest screenshot 8

If you’d like to chat with a friend who does have an account, you can use the messaging box.

Pinterest screenshot 9

Some of your favorite bloggers and companies have Pinterest boards! If you’d like to follow their boards,  you can search their name in the search bar. You can also click on the ‘following’ button on the top right corner of the page and follow Pinterest boards by category and see what popular boards are currently trending.

Pinterest screenshot 10

Pinterest for businesses

If you’re a blogger, Pinterest is a great way to gain more exposure by upgrading to a free business account. You just link your blog, connect your social media accounts, and when someone saves one of the pins you’ve created from any of your posts you can see how much traffic that each post is getting.

Pinterest screenshot 11

You can also consult with a Pinterest ad team to help you create ads to expand your reach even further.

Whether it be professionally or just as a fun thing to do in your spare time, Pinterest has something for everyone. A world of video game memes and obscure fruit art awaits, so, what are you waiting for?

The Complete Red Dead Online Weapons Guide: Shotguns

Get to know the shotguns in Red Dead Online.

rdr2 shotgun

Red Dead Online is a world where respect, money, and loot comes at the end of the barrel of the gun. To survive and reap the rewards of the cutthroat world of the Wild West, you’ll have to be well armed. You’ll also want to spend your money wisely. We’ve put together an in-depth guide to every weapon available in Red Dead Online, so you can know exactly what you’re getting into before you fork over your hard-earned cash. For this guide, we’ll be looking at the powerhouses of a gunslinger’s arsenal: shotguns.

The Complete Red Dead Online Shotgun Guide

Note: We’ve based our number rankings for damage and fire rate in this guide out of a possible score of 10.

Sawed-Off Shotgun

red dead 2 sawed off shotgun
A player-customized Sawed-Off.

Rank Unlocked: 19

Cost: $111.00

Capacity: 2

Damage Per Shot: 7

Fire Rate: 6

Description: There’s no better way to let someone know you mean business than at the end of a Sawed-Off Shotgun. This hand cannon packs all the punch of a full-sized Double Barrel in a convenient, pocket-sized package. Its main advantage is that it’s the only shotgun you can carry in a sidearm slot, which means a significant upgrade to your overall firepower. It also has the same drawbacks as the Double Barrel as well, namely the 2-shot ammo capacity. That can be easily remedied though: dual-wielding two of these bad boys means you have four shotgun shells you can fire off in quick succession, absolutely decimating anything unfortunate enough to be standing in front of you.

Double Barreled Shotgun

red dead 2 double barrel
A player customized Double-Barrel.

Rank Unlocked: 30

Cost: $185.00

Capacity: 2

Damage Per Shot: 7

Fire Rate: 6

Description: To paraphrase a certain zombie-slayer from a far off land, this is your boomstick. The Double-Barrel shotgun offers two rounds of misery-inducing buckshot that can be fired off as quickly as you can pull the trigger. The only drawback is that every time you fire off those two shots, you’ll need to undergo a somewhat lengthy reload process that can leave you exposed to return fire. That said, the Double Barrel boasts the highest damage of any shotgun, meaning anyone on the wrong end of those two shots is unlikely to be standing once you’re done.

Pump-Action Shotgun

red dead 2 pump shotgun
A player customized Pump Action.

Rank Unlocked: 5

Cost: $266.00

Capacity: 5

Damage Per Shot: 6

Fire Rate: 5

Description: The Pump-Action is a solid all-all around weapon. Despite being unlocked at a low rank, this workhorse is a dependable choice even into the higher levels. It has a good balance between damage, reload speed, and fire rate. It doesn’t excel in any particular area, but there also aren’t any huge drawbacks to this gun either. And of course, what’s more fear-inducing than the sound of loading a pump-action shotgun?

Semi-Auto Shotgun

red dead 2 auto shotgun
A player customized Semi-Auto Shotgun.

Rank Unlocked: 42

Cost: $540.00

Capacity: 5

Damage Per Shot: 6

Fire Rate: 6

Description: No need to work a pump or cock a lever between shots on this powerhouse. Simply keep pulling the trigger and you’ll blanket your targets with lead. Compared to the other shotguns, the Semi-Auto’s damage is on the low end of the spectrum, but its blistering fire rate more than makes up for it. If you’re walking into a close-range firefight, this is the gun to take with you. You’ll have to be patient, though. Its high price tag means you’ll have to do some penny pinching to save up enough to buy one, and it’s also the last shotgun to be unlocked.

Repeating Shotgun

red dead 2 repeating shotgun
A player-customized Repeating Shotgun.

Rank Unlocked: 11

Cost: $434.00

Capacity: 6

Damage Per Shot: 6

Fire Rate: 5

Description: Movie buffs will recognize this iconic shotgun from “Terminator 2.” Of course, the version Arnold uses in the movie is sawed-off and you can’t perform his iconic flip-cock in the game. Despite that, this is still a stylish and deadly weapon. The lever action makes for a fast fire rate, and it also boasts a high damage per shot, on par with that of the Pump-Action. The high capacity and quick reload speed make this a solid contender for the game’s best overall shotgun.

When you’re backed into a corner by a rival gang or surrounded by the law, a shotgun can be your ticket out of a sticky situation. Though they all have different strengths, what’s certain is that when it comes to raw power, the shotgun can’t be beat.

5 Best Hidden Locations in Red Dead 2

Explore these spooky, mysterious, hidden locations in the world of RDR2.

The massive world of Red Dead Redemption 2 is rich with secrets and mysteries for the inquisitive gunslinger to stumble upon. Most of these locations are unmarked and can be missed entirely by those that don’t know where to look. Though there are doubtless more still waiting to be discovered, here are maps to our 5 favorite mysterious and secret locations.

5 Best Hidden Locations in Red Dead 2

5. The Skater’s Cabin

skater's cabin map

red dead redemption 2 skaters cabin

Up north in the snow-covered mountains of Ambarino, players can find this lonely cabin on the shores of the Barrow Lagoon. Though it may look like a nondescript winter retreat from the outside, looking closer reveals a head-scratching mystery. Heading inside the cabin, players can find the Cigarette Card for Felix Hawley, a world-champion ice skater. Next to the card is a newspaper clipping that offers a few sentences about how a skater (presumably Felix) met with an unfortunate accident that cut his career short.

Heading outside, players will find a defaced grave not far from the cabin. The grave belongs to the unfortunate Felix. His coffin has been exhumed and his tombstone vandalized with graffiti that reads “NO ICE IN HELL.” Unfortunately, there’s not much else to find in the way of clues, and the mystery of Felix Hawley leaves more questions than answers. Was his death foul play? Who would dig up his coffin? How did he meet his mysterious “accident?” The answers may still be out there, waiting for a keen-minded player to uncover.

4. Limpany

red dead 2 limpany map

red dead 2 limpany

If you head down the hill from Horseshoe Overlook (the spot where the gang camps in the game’s early chapters), you’ll soon spot what looks like a giant black scar amongst the landscape. Approaching will reveal the burned carcass of an entire town. Checking your map will reveal that it was once named Limpany, but aside from that, the town won’t reveal its secrets easily. Exploring won’t reveal much except charred corpses still locked in the town jail and some gold tucked away in a lockbox in the remnants of the Sheriff’s Office. Perhaps Limpany’s secrets went up in smoke as well.

3. Meteor House

red dead 2 meteor house map

red dead 2 meteor house

This location houses a bizarre and darkly humorous secret. From the outside, it looks like just another nondescript shack tucked away in the Roanoke Valley. Push open the door, however, and you’ll find what at first appears to be a massacre. Bloody body parts, internal organs, and mangled bodies are strewn about the interior of the cabin, with a giant smoking hole in the center of the destruction. Further examination will reveal that this wasn’t an ordinary explosion. You can actually pick up a meteorite from the hole in the floor. Couple that with the giant hole in the ceiling, and it seems the inhabitants of the cabin met with a literal death from above.

2. Witches’ Cauldron

red dead 2 witches cauldron map

red dead 2 witches cauldron

An unsettling experience awaits those who venture out to the northern edges of the map in the Grizzlies. Heading into a grove of trees on the mountainous slopes, you may begin to notice eerie noises and a feeling of discomfort will descend over you. Soon, you’ll find the apparent source of these eerie vibes. A small shack sits among the pines, and heading inside will reveal some macabre sights: animal bones. Skulls. A cawing raven. Tonics and potions scattered about. In the midst of it all sits a boiling cauldron, filled with a murky green liquid. You’ll have to decide, as the raven stares at you with his beady little eyes… will you take a sip of this mysterious witches’ brew? Only you can decide.

1. Suicide Cult

red dead 2 suicide cult map

red dead 2 suicide cult

Up to the north of Emerald Ranch on the shores of a small pond sits the remains of a large building dubbed Hani’s Bethel, peacefully falling into ruin. Heading inside will reveal a sight that is decidedly less peaceful. Rows and rows of skeletal corpses lie neatly tucked into rotting beds. Melted candles, skulls, and books are strewn around the interior, and a single skeleton sits at the head of it all, the lord of this house of death. A note clutched in his bony fingers reveals that he answers to a higher power, and this cult has apparently followed him into the great beyond. Follow the instructions in the note and wait in the shack until night falls and you may be in for a close encounter of your own.

Mysteries hide amongst the trees and foothills of Red Dead 2. Will you be the one to solve the ones listed above and find the answers we’ve missed? Or will you stumble onto a mystery of your own, one that no other player has found yet? One thing is for sure: there’s quite a bit left to uncover in the wild, wild west.

Carbine Repeater

red dead 2 carbine repeater
A player customized Carbine.

Rank Unlocked: 1

Cost: $90.00

Capacity: 7

Damage Per Shot: 6

Fire Rate:  5

Description: The Carbine Repeater is your starter long gun, unlocked from the start of the game. It’s decent, but nothing to really write home about. It’ll usually take a few body shots to drop an enemy, so you’ll want to go for headshots whenever possible to make quick work of your opponents. Where it really excels is with its blistering reload speed. It works on an unusual mechanism where new magazine is inserted on the back of the stock, allowing you to keep shooting and shooting with almost no pauses.

Lancaster Repeater

red dead 2 lancaster
A player-customized Lancaster.

Rank Unlocked: 12

Cost: $243.00

Capacity: 14

Damage Per Shot: 6

Fire Rate: 6

Description: A favorite of cowboys, lawmen, and everyone in between, the Lancaster is a dependable piece of equipment. It’s exceptionally accurate for a repeater, allowing you to easily pick off targets at longer ranges. As soon as possible, we recommend upgrading from the Carbine to the much more well-rounded Lancaster.

Litchfield Repeater

red dead 2 litchfield
A player customized Litchfield.

Rank Unlocked: 18

Cost: $348.00

Capacity: 16

Damage Per Shot: 7

Fire Rate: 5

Description: The Litchfield is a fearsome weapon, boasting a huge 16 round capacity and massive per-shot damage, almost on par with a few of the games more powerful bolt-actions and snipers. This raw power is balanced by a slower fire-rate, meaning the Litchfield is well suited to players who like to be a little more deliberate with their shots.

Springfield Rifle

red dead 2 springfield
A player-customized Springfield.

Rank Unlocked: 38

Cost: $156.00

Capacity: 1

Damage Per Shot: 8

Fire Rate: 3

Description: The venerable Springfield was formerly the standard issue rifle for the U.S. Army, but it’s starting to show its age. Despite its devastating power, the weapon can only chamber a single shot. After firing, you’ll need to load a new round and prime the weapon again to keep shooting. It certainly isn’t suited for rapid fire, but doesn’t quite have the range and accuracy of a full-fledged sniper rifle. We recommend adding a mid or short range scope and using the Springfield as a sort of close-range sniper to get the most out of this weapon.

Bolt Action Rifle

red dead 2 bolt action
A player customized Bolt Action.

Rank Unlocked: 7

Cost: $216.00

Capacity: 5

Damage Per Shot: 7

Fire Rate: 4

Description: It becomes quickly apparent when using the Bolt Action why it eventually replaced the Springfield. Though it does sacrifice some damage, the higher magazine capacity and quicker firing speed more than make up for it. It’s also a very versatile gun, excelling at everything from mid-range shootouts to longer range encounters. You’ll still want to keep an eye on your rounds though, as the reload process can be a bit slow.

Rolling Block Rifle

red dead 2 rolling block
A player customized Rolling Block.

Rank Unlocked: 13

Cost: $411.00

Capacity: 1

Damage Per Shot: 9

Fire Rate: 3

Description:  A cross between a musket and a sniper rifle, nothing beats the Rolling Block when it comes to raw power. Unfortunately, like its little brother, the Springfield, it can only hold a single round. You’ll have to fully reload the weapon after every shot, so the Rolling Block is really only suited to long ranges. You won’t be doing any quick scoping with this sniper rifle. That said, if you spot an enemy from a distance, they’ll be on the ground before they even know what hit them.

Carcano Rifle

red dead 2 carcano
A player customized Carcano.

Rank Unlocked: 50

Cost: $456.00

Capacity: 6

Damage Per Shot: 8

Fire Rate: 4

Description: An Italian military issue rifle, the Carcano is infamously known as the rifle that would eventually be used to assassinate JFK. It operates exactly like the Bolt Action, but with a higher capacity and damage. If you find yourself frustrated with the Rolling Block’s slow reloads, you might prefer the Carcano. It’s capacity and firing speed also make the Carcano much better suited to shootouts at closer ranges.

Varmint Rifle

red dead 2 varmint rifle
A player customized Varmint Rifle.

Rank Unlocked: 8

Cost: $72.00

Capacity: 14

Damage Per Shot: 4

Fire Rate: 7

Description: If there were such a thing as a Wild West submachine gun, it’d be the Varmint Rifle. Its low caliber rounds are designed for small game hunting, and therefore don’t do much damage. It’s the only pump action rifle, though, which means it has a blistering fire rate. Coupled with the high capacity, and you can spray your enemies with a barrage of fire in short order. It may not be your first choice, but the Varmint Rifle can be a nifty little weapon to use in a pinch.

Whether you value power, accuracy, or speed, there’s a rifle for every situation and preference. Experiment with a few different options so you get the sense of what works best for you, because there’s no tool more indispensable than your trusty rifle.

What happened to FarmVille and other Facebook games?

Facebook games used to be everywhere. What happened?

FarmVille

Early in its 2009 release, FarmVille was one of the most played and discussed games on the web. It not only launched its parent company, Zynga, into incredible success, it also paved the way for other Facebook games to flourish. However, 10 years later, the game’s popularity has not stood the test of time. Its sequel, FarmVille 2, did not garner nearly as much success as its predecessor. This is odd, considering a year before FarmVille 2’s release, FarmVille was one of the top ranking mobile games on Facebook. So what happened exactly?

The decline of Facebook games

The biggest reason Facebook games aren’t as common as they used to be is actually because of how common smartphones have become. It may not seem like those two are related, but most games like FarmVille have moved to mobile. Addictive games with fast and easy gameplay are perfect for mobile devices. Gamers can play these games on the go, which lets them be played wherever and whenever they want.

In recent years, Facebook has moved many of its games to Messenger, since mobile has taken over these types of games. This way, their games can be played on mobile, where they will thrive. There are still some games available to play on Facebook itself, such as Candy Crush Saga, but even these games have mobile versions (with Facebook connectivity), so you can play at home and on the go.

That isn’t to say Facebook is no longer in the gaming scene. In 2015, Facebook Gameroom was launched as a competitor to Steam and Twitch. You can use it to download web games and even stream them live to your Facebook account. This has also caused some YouTube and Twitch streamers to move their content onto Facebook.

What happened to FarmVille exactly?

FarmVille has moved to mobile, following many other Facebook games created by Zynga. This transition hasn’t been a great one for FarmVille or its sequel, FarmVille 2. Both games are far from the success they had on Facebook. This is most likely because of ferocious competition in the mobile gaming market. On Facebook, FarmVille didn’t have much competition until Candy Crush came out. On mobile, however, FarmVille faces a fight from hundreds of games. New games are coming out on mobile every day, and many of them have completely overshadowed FarmVille at this point.

Unlike FarmVille, Candy Crush seems to remain fairly popular on both mobile and Facebook. Puzzle games, especially ones that are frequently updated, seem to last longer in popularity than “rinse and repeat” simulation-style games like FarmVille. For this reason, Candy Crush’s rise in popularity was part of the reason FarmVille fell so quickly.

If you’re looking to find some of the Facebook games that remain, be sure to check out our Softonic Solutions page where we’ve listed the top 13 Facebook games in 2019.  These games can be surprisingly difficult to find since there isn’t a games tab on Facebook anymore. If you know of any others, feel free to add them to our Softonic Solutions list.

RDR 2: “Duchesses and Other Animals” Guide

Follow our maps to complete this RDR2 quest.

red dead redemption 2 algernon's revolver

In Red Dead Redemption 2, players encounter a variety of colorful strangers, each offering unique side quests with equally unique rewards. One such quest, “Duchesses and Other Animals,” will reward the player with a unique hat and a beautiful custom revolver that can’t be obtained elsewhere. The quest itself, however, isn’t easy. Players will have to head to the far corners of the map to collect rare items for a collector in Saint Denis, and without knowing where these items are, it can be a long time before this quest is completed. Don’t fret: we’ve made it easy for you so you can get your hands on that unique gun and hat in no time at all.

RDR 2: “Duchesses and Other Animals” Guide

At some point during Chapter 4, players have the option to meet with Algernon Wasp, an exotics collector, at his shop in Saint Denis. Head to the shop to talk to Algernon, who explains that he’s been commissioned to create artistic pieces for various high-profile clients. He wants to hire you to help collect the items he needs. The quest is split into five parts, and will involve both gathering certain flowers and hunting rare birds.

Part One

Egret/Lady of the Night locations

Item Requests:

  • 5  Little Egret Plumes
  • 5 Reddish Egret Plumes
  • 5 Snowy Egret Plumes
  • 15 Lady of the Night Orchids

Rewards: $110

The first part of the quest will see you hunting exotic egrets. For this task, make sure you have a Varmint Rifle handy. Egrets of all kinds like to hang around in the red circle marked on the map above, mostly the eastern end of the Bayou Nwa. They’ll hang around in clusters, but will bolt at the sound of a gunshot. We recommend using Dead Eye to pick your shots and take out as many as you can in one swoop. You may have to leave and return to the area several times to let the egrets return so you can get enough plumes. You may also notice herons and spoonbills as you hunt. Take these out too, as you’ll need them for later stages of the quest. After you’ve finished bird hunting, snatch up the orchids, denoted with blue dots on our map.

Part Two

Item Requests:

  • 20 Heron Plumes
  • 7 Lady Slipper Orchids
  • 10 Moccasin Flower Orchids

Rewards: $125

Part two is a bit more involved, and will see you riding out of Lemoyne for most of the quest. First, gather up some heron plumesYou’ll find them in the same area you found the egrets in part one, as well as other watery areas in Leymone, such as along river banks or on the swampy shores of the bayou. Next, head up to Roanoke Ridge to gather Mocassin Flowers, marked with pink dots on our map. You’ll be able to find most of what you need near Butcher’s Creek. Finally, you’ll need to ride out to Big Valley to grab Lady Slipper Orchids, which we’ve denoted on our map with green dots.

Part Three

Item Requests:

  • 25 Gator Eggs
  • 3 Acuna’s Star Orchids
  • 7 Cigar Orchids
  • 5 Ghost Orchids

Rewards: $150

Part three should be fairly quick and easy to complete. Gator’s eggs have been indicated in orange dots on our map, and contain 5 eggs per cluster. Acuna’s Star Orchids are designated with black dots, Cigar Orchids with purple dots, and Ghost Orchids with light blue dots.

Part Four

  • 5 Night Scented Orchids
  • 10 Rat Tail Orchids
  • 5 Spider’s Orchids

Some more hunting is in store for this bit of quest. Grab a Varmint Rifle and take down some spoonbills. They can be found in the same areas as egrets and herons, as well as along riverbanks and near other watery areas. Then, you can gather your orchids. Night Scented Orchids are light green, Rat Tail Orchids are yellow, and Spider’s Orchids are gold.

  • 5 Dragon’s Mouth Orchids
  • 5 Queen’s Orchids
  • 10 Sparrow’s Egg Orchids

Rewards: $200, Exotic Hat, Algernon’s Revolver

Finally, perhaps the most involved bit of the quest. It’s only gathering orchids, but it’ll take you to the far corners of the map. You’ll find the Clamshell Orchids at the maroon dots, Dragon’s Mouth at the grey dots, Queen’s Orchids at the fuschia dots, and Sparrow’s Egg Orchids at the navy dots.

Take these orchids back to Algernon to receive your final rewards:

The Exotic Hat is a suitably over-the-top bit of headwear: a wide-brimmed grey hat with egret plumes tucked into the blue satin band.

Algernon’s Revolver

Algernon’s Revolver is a unique variant of the Double Action Revolver. It’s stainless steel, short barreled, and engraved with gold art-deco embellishments. It’s also got a wide mother-of-pearl grip and a nice, snappy firing rate. This excellent weapon makes all that work worth it.
