Xbox Game Pass has established itself as one of the most relevant subscriptions in the video game industry, offering its users access to over 400 titles. This service has transformed the way millions of players consume video games, but not everyone in the developer community thinks its impact is entirely positive.
Is it sustainable for developers in the long term?
In a recent interview, Alex Hutchinson, director of Revenge of the Savage Planet, expressed his concerns about the Xbox Game Pass subscription model. Although his game was launched on the service and has seen notable traffic from it, Hutchinson argues that this model could devalue content and affect independent developers in the long run. “What we’ve seen is that content has been devalued and that people are less willing to pay for things,” he stated, adding that this could result in less game creation and the risk of bankruptcy for many small studios.
Among the immediate benefits that Game Pass offers, Hutchinson mentioned Microsoft’s upfront payment for including their game in the service, as well as increased visibility. However, he suggested that it would be more appropriate to allow games to be available on subscription services only one year after their release, similar to what happens in the film industry after a movie has been shown on the big screen.
Despite his reservations, Hutchinson also acknowledged that Microsoft has been an “incredible partner” and that the financial incentive for being part of Game Pass is considerable. Despite the criticism, there are success stories, such as Expedition 33 and Oblivion Remastered, which have sold well on the service at a reduced price and have reached millions of copies sold. This model raises a necessary debate about the future of the industry and the sustainability of independent studios in the era of streaming and subscriptions.
