Director of an important video game expresses his concerns about the Xbox Game Pass subscription model

Xbox Game Pass has established itself as one of the most relevant subscriptions in the video game industry, offering its users access to over 400 titles. This service has transformed the way millions of players consume video games, but not everyone in the developer community thinks its impact is entirely positive.

Is it sustainable for developers in the long term?

In a recent interview, Alex Hutchinson, director of Revenge of the Savage Planet, expressed his concerns about the Xbox Game Pass subscription model. Although his game was launched on the service and has seen notable traffic from it, Hutchinson argues that this model could devalue content and affect independent developers in the long run. “What we’ve seen is that content has been devalued and that people are less willing to pay for things,” he stated, adding that this could result in less game creation and the risk of bankruptcy for many small studios.

Among the immediate benefits that Game Pass offers, Hutchinson mentioned Microsoft’s upfront payment for including their game in the service, as well as increased visibility. However, he suggested that it would be more appropriate to allow games to be available on subscription services only one year after their release, similar to what happens in the film industry after a movie has been shown on the big screen.

Despite his reservations, Hutchinson also acknowledged that Microsoft has been an “incredible partner” and that the financial incentive for being part of Game Pass is considerable. Despite the criticism, there are success stories, such as Expedition 33 and Oblivion Remastered, which have sold well on the service at a reduced price and have reached millions of copies sold. This model raises a necessary debate about the future of the industry and the sustainability of independent studios in the era of streaming and subscriptions.

Obsidian confirms that their next game will be deeper and darker than we expect

Obsidian confirms that their next game will be deeper and darker than we expect

The highly anticipated sequel from Obsidian Entertainment, The Outer Worlds 2, promises a deeper and darker narrative approach compared to its predecessor. The narrative of the first game, described as a “diverted critique of a solar system dominated by brutal corporations,” will transform to reflect more serious contemporary issues. Brandon Adler, the game director, admitted in an interview that the first title sometimes felt monotonous and aimed to provide players with a richer and more varied experience in its content.

In a world dominated by capitalism, we couldn’t expect anything else

One of the most significant changes lies in the representation of factions within the game. Instead of being simple caricatures, factions in The Outer Worlds 2, such as the authoritarian Protectorate and Auntie’s Choice, are expected to display a more threatening and competitive character. The complexity of these interactions promises to add a “grittiness” to the narrative, reflecting the current struggle between security and freedom, a theme more than relevant in contemporary reality.

Leonard Boyarsky takes on the role of unique creative director in this sequel, while Tim Cain, known for his work on the Fallout saga, acts as a creative consultant in his semi-retirement. This change in leadership has influenced the tone of the game, providing a darker and more mature perspective in the development of the story. However, Adler assures that the absurd humor, a cherished feature of the first game, will still be present, albeit with a less “silly” approach.

The Outer Worlds 2 is scheduled for release on October 29, 2025. With these changes in tone and narrative, the developers hope to not only maintain the essence that made the first game famous but also to offer something innovative that resonates with the current concerns of players.

Season 8 of Diablo IV has unleashed a wave of criticism just a few days after its release. Players have strongly voiced their discontent on social media, especially on Reddit, expressing their dissatisfaction with the recent perception that the voices in the Spanish version have been recorded with artificial intelligence, which has affected the immersion and quality of the game.

Not only dubbing, but also reliquaries

Additionally, the new battle pass system, now called Relics, has contributed to the general discontent. Blizzard has introduced four options, each focused on different cosmetic rewards such as armor, weapons, or mounts, but only one of these passes is completely free. Previously, players received 700 platinum coins upon completing the battle pass; now, that figure has been significantly reduced to just 200 coins, representing a significant loss and has been a cause for outrage.

The prices of the Reliquaries have also been the subject of criticism. The package that includes all the Reliquaries costs 1,000 platinum coins, while the Deluxe version rises to 2,800 coins. In this context, players feel that they are getting less for the same cost, given that the current system offers fewer rewards overall.

The discontent has reached such a point that some users have declared their intention to stop playing, comparing the current situation to previous issues in other titles, such as Apex Legends. Many believe that this strategy by Blizzard could be aimed at maximizing their revenue at the expense of player satisfaction.

The Diablo IV community is eagerly awaiting how Blizzard will respond to these criticisms, while wondering if significant changes will be made to address these issues and regain public trust.

Starfield has loading screens for a very good reason

Despite recurring criticism from players, loading screens are considered a necessary evil in video game development, especially in RPGs, according to statements from Bruce Nesmith, a former employee of Bethesda. In an industry that has seen significant advancements in technology, including SSD storage systems that allow for faster loading, Bethesda has chosen to keep these screens as an essential part of its game design.

Bethesda knows they couldn’t make the game any other way

Nesmith, who worked on iconic titles like Oblivion and was involved in the development of Starfield, argues that loading screens are essential due to the complex nature of open worlds and the rich narratives that characterize Bethesda’s RPGs. Unlike games with more linear narratives, which can hide loading times through smooth transitions, RPGs require a different processing of content and events that cannot always be done seamlessly.

Although some developers have found innovative ways to disguise loading screens, as evidenced in recent titles where black fades or passages requiring interactions are used, Bethesda chooses to maintain this mechanic to prioritize the quality of the gaming experience. In this sense, the company seems committed to preserving the essence of what they consider a great RPG, avoiding compromises that could affect the narrative richness of their sagas.

Additionally, Bethesda has been on a constant release streak, offering titles that go directly to Game Pass, including remasters and definitive editions of their beloved franchises, such as DOOM and Quake. While loading screens are a debated aspect among users, it is clear that Bethesda does not plan to eliminate them, at least not without considering their impact on the overall gaming experience.

Additionally, it will be accessible from day one on subscription services like PC Game Pass and PlayStation Plus.

In a recent live broadcast, the Finnish studio revealed that FBC: Firebreak will be set six years after the events of Control, offering PvE experiences that require player collaboration. The missions will be highly replayable and will feature challenges that encourage teamwork across different levels and environments.

A game that will receive at least two years of free support

One of the most interesting features of the game is its focus on post-launch content. Remedy has confirmed that it will offer additional free missions, such as Paper Chase and Hot Fix, scheduled to be released in 2025, along with more updates in 2026. It is important to note that, although post-launch support will be present, the game will not adopt a service model, which means that all new playable content will be free for all players.

Additionally, FBC: Firebreak will include a “Requisitions” system that will reward players with new gear and cosmetics simply for playing, ensuring that any unlocked item will always be available. However, there will also be “Classified Requisitions” that can be purchased with real money. These items, of a cosmetic nature, will not affect gameplay. Remedy Entertainment continues to impress with its innovative approach and complex narratives, and FBC: Firebreak could be their most experimental title to date.

Starting April 23, owners of LG 2022 OLED TVs, 2023 Smart TVs, and newer models can enjoy a new way to access Xbox games through the Xbox app. This initiative allows users to play via Xbox Game Pass without the need to have a console at home, which represents a significant shift in Microsoft’s strategy to expand its gaming ecosystem.

A TV that is an Xbox

The advertising campaign titled This Is An Xbox aims to highlight that existing devices, such as televisions, smartphones, and tablets, can run Xbox games, democratizing access to its vast library of titles. To play, users will need a stable Internet connection and, although not mandatory, it is recommended to use compatible Xbox and PlayStation controllers to optimize the gaming experience. Additionally, it is important for those with Internet plans that include data caps to consider the implications this may have when playing via streaming.

Phil Spencer, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, has stated that the company’s goal is to increase the number of players in its ecosystem, understanding that “playing on Xbox” is not limited to a console, but also includes PC, mobile devices, and now smart TVs. Spencer emphasizes that, although consoles may not be the main source of income, the subscription to Xbox Game Pass, at 17.99 euros per month, is essential to ensure recurring revenue, a strategy that has become crucial following the recent layoffs at the company.

In other news related to Game Pass, Bethesda has recently released Oblivion Remastered, a title that will surely attract both new players and veterans of the world of Tamriel.

The long-awaited release of The Alters, the new strategy and management title from 11 bit studios, is set for June 13. After several delays and a long wait, the studio behind acclaimed games like This War of Mine and Frostpunk has announced the date during the Triple-I Initiative event, accompanied by a new trailer showcasing some of the gameplay of the project.

Are we ourselves or an alternative version of ourselves?

The Alters presents itself as an ambitious proposal in which players will take control of Jan Dolski, who finds himself trapped in a hostile and dangerous world. The central mechanic of the game allows Dolski to create alternative versions of himself, each with different skills, motivations, and pasts, adding a strategic layer to the need to manage a colony of survivors. This innovative dynamic not only challenges conventional management but also allows for the exploration of narrative and emotional values through the Alters that are generated.

Each of these alternative Jans brings not only unique skills, such as that of a botanist or a miner, but their personal stories also impact their behavior and relationships within the colony. For example, a Jan with a complicated emotional past might see their performance affected by nostalgia, which could trigger conflicts and unexpected dynamics among the colonists.

In addition to its release on PC, The Alters will be available on PS5, Xbox Series, and through Game Pass, thus ensuring broad access across various platforms. Given 11 bit studios’ solid experience in handling deep narratives and innovative mechanics, the gaming community is eager to experience this new adventure.

The ZeniMax Workers United union has authorized a strike with an overwhelming support of 94% from its members, following a stalemate in negotiations with Microsoft. This measure reflects dissatisfaction regarding fundamental aspects such as competitive salaries, work flexibility, and transparency in the outsourcing of certain jobs. Despite being one of the largest companies in the world, employees have highlighted that they continue to face challenges in achieving basic working conditions.

Some more than reasonable demands from the union

The workers, who play an essential role in the development of iconic titles like Indiana Jones and DOOM: The Dark Ages, argue that the multinational has offered proposals that do not adequately address their demands. “Paying their employees a living wage as a multimillion-dollar company is the least they could do,” stated a union representative. Low wages have led many to pause their lives as their income does not match the rising cost of living in the cities where they work.

Microsoft, for its part, has acknowledged the importance of the quality control team and has presented a package of proposals that includes an immediate increase in compensation, improvements in benefits, and the implementation of a hybrid work model. In statements to the media, the company emphasized the need to resolve this conflict fairly and equitably, recognizing the substantial contributions of its employees: “Our quality control team is an integral part of our business”.

Against the backdrop of the opening of negotiations and strong union action, the coming weeks are expected to be crucial for both sides. While workers are determined to fight for tangible improvements, Microsoft wants to retain a key team for the future of its projects, in a context where the competition for talent in the video game industry is fierce.

Xbox introduces new improvements and benefits in Game Pass

Xbox continues to enhance the gaming experience with a series of updates focused on both PC and cloud, while introducing new benefits for Game Pass subscribers. The company has released an update that allows members of Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass to unlock cosmetics and virtual currency in free-to-play titles like Heroes of the Storm and Naraka: Bladepoint. Additionally, new rewards are expected in April for games like Warzone and Enlisted.

Small improvements for an already interesting service

In the realm of cloud gaming, Xbox Cloud Gaming implements a more intuitive navigation that will allow players to switch between different titles without leaving a gaming session. This functionality will debut with Assassin’s Creed Shadows, thus offering a smoother and more connected experience. Additionally, the catalog of games available for streaming has been expanded, now including new titles like Party Animals and Gotham Knights, among others.

The March update also focuses on improving the Game Bar interface on PC, making it more accessible and intuitive, and adds themed wallpapers to customize the user experience. Outside the digital realm, Microsoft has launched the Xbox Adaptive Joystick, an inclusive controller designed to enhance accessibility among gamers.

On the other hand, some users of the Xbox Insider Program are testing a new feature called Game Hub, which will allow them to see detailed information about games before starting a match. This tool is in the testing phase and could include data such as pending achievements and friends’ activity. It is speculated that this functionality could be integrated into Game Pass, showing additional benefits and exclusive content for subscribers.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard could arrive very soon on Xbox Game Pass

Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the latest title from BioWare, has not met the commercial expectations that Electronic Arts had projected. Despite being part of one of the most recognized franchises in the fantasy RPG genre, the game has had disappointing performance, leaving many players dissatisfied with its offering. This situation has led to it being considered a failure for EA, which hoped it would become a milestone within the genre.

Very clear signs that it could arrive soon on the Xbox service

To facilitate access and expand its audience, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is now available on the PS Plus Essential subscription, which is not a good indicator for a AAA game. Additionally, the title has started to appear in the PC Game Pass store, suggesting it may be coming to the platform in the near future. Through EA Play, which is part of PC Game Pass Ultimate, players also have access to a demo of the game, which could help attract new players.

On March 20, BioWare released a free DLC for PC consumers, which includes temporary weapon cosmetics for the character Rook. However, this content will only be available to those who purchase the game before April 9, 2025. To boost its presence in the market, Dragon Age: The Veilguard also features an attractive 50% discount in the Valve store, bringing its price on Steam to €29.99.

With these moves, EA and BioWare seem to be looking for new strategies to regain ground and rekindle interest in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Although the game has received mixed reviews, the effort to ensure its accessibility suggests that the developers are determined to improve the experience and its overall reception among RPG fans.
