Top PS5 Games: New and Upcoming Releases

The PS5 is here. Sony’s next-gen console is making a big splash as the star of the most successful PlayStation launch to date. With unlimited power and providing a whole new dimension of sensations thanks to its revolutionary DualSense controller, PS5 has already dazzled players around the world. This is the most powerful console that Sony has ever created. But what’s a console without a game library?

The PlayStation 5 launch has been accompanied by a fantastic selection of titles to welcome the new console. There are exclusive Sony console games like the spectacular remake of Demon’s Souls or the exciting Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales as well as vastly improved versions of titles we already knew, like Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition. But that’s just the beginning!

PS5 already has a game library that will delight every gamer, but there’s much more to come. Sony’s The Future of Gaming conference made it clear that there are great titles on their way that will leave us speechless. Want to know which ones?

In today’s article, we’ll review the best PS5 launch games as well as the video games that are going to drop in 2021. Let’s get to it!

Exclusive PS5 launch games

Demon’s Souls

We start our list off with Demon’s Souls, the spectacular remake of the From Software masterpiece that inspired other greats such as the Dark Souls saga, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice or the superb Bloodborne.

The game is an exact recreation of Miyazaki’s original title, once again plunging us into the kingdom of Boletaria to face the curse. After succumbing to a demon, we will need to collect souls to recover our body and have any chance of defeating the threat menacing us.

Visually stunning and as challenging (and frustrating!) as the original, Demon’s Souls is a classic resurrected to make the most of Sony’s new console. Are you ready to die again?

Astro’s Playroom

Astro’s Playroom is the alluring way your PlayStation 5 will welcome you to the next generation of video games. The title is pre-installed on all PS5s and is designed to demonstrate all of the console’s new functions, especially the possibilities of its innovative DualSense controller.

In Astro’s Playroom you accompany the adorable Astro through various worlds where you can pick up all kinds of PlayStation collectibles. They will teach you how the DualSense controller is capable of interacting with the movement of your hands, and even when you blow into the mic. You’ll also discover how it can transfer the feeling of sensations and textures to your hands.

Fun, endearing, and full of nods to the story and characters we’ve known since the birth of the first PlayStation, Astro’s Playroom is a great, free game you shouldn’t pass up

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Sackboy, the mascot of the LittleBigPlanet saga, returns to PlayStation to welcome the new Sony console. But don’t let the name fool you, Sackboy: A Big Adventure is not just another addition to the sack-folk franchise. In this new game we leave behind the creation and exchange of levels to focus on something completely different: a challenging co-op platform to overcome with three more friends.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure shelves the 2.5D graphics typical of the LittleBigPlanet saga to offer us tantalizing 3D graphics to maximize the power of PS5. As on every good platform, your skill and reflexes are key to pass the 60 levels of the game. Their musical levels are especially memorable (and fun!). You have to coordinate your movements, jumps, and falls with the melodies that accompany the level. Sounds fun, right?

If you like the platforms or are looking for a good title with local co-op multiplayer, Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a great addition to your PS5

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales

After the success of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Insomniac Games brings back Spider-Man for the long-awaited Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. We have a new superhero for a new generation of players and consoles and the truth is, as always, Spidey delivers.

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is the direct continuation of the original 2018 game. If you haven’t played it, don’t worry, because the Ultimate version of Miles Morales comes with a remastered version of the original. In it, Peter Parker leaves the city for a few weeks, leaving Miles to keep the peace in New York City. The Underground organization and the ROXXON corporation, however, are not going to make it easy for us.

With improved gameplay and a huge dose of action, Miles Morales provides a unique experience on PS5 thanks to the DualSense controller. The game offers hours of fun and action spread over a ton of both primary and secondary missions. To top it off, it has a great soundtrack and a good number of easter eggs that will delight fans of good-ole Spider-Man. What are you waiting for?

New year, new PS4? You need these essential games for 2020

Check out all the must have essential games you need for PS4.

must have Sony PlayStation 4 games for 2020

The PS4 and PS4 Pro are amazing games consoles. Graphics are so good now and games so massive that you can easily lose yourself in hundreds of hours of play per game. That’s just it though, at the end of the day all those graphics chips and processors, and all that system memory is nothing without the games. If all you have is the PS4, you don’t actually have anything at all.

Today, we’re going to walk you through all the must have PS4 games you need to get your hands on. We’ve action, strategy, sports, and many other types of adrenaline fueled and cranium stimulating interactive entertainment. These are the games you need, if you’re to let your new PlayStation 4 reach its true potential.

Best PS4 games 2020

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Marvel's Spiderman

The first game in our list is a superhero game because, well, that’s just the world we live in now. Marvel’s Spiderman is the best Spiderman game to come out since Spider-Man 2 on that most classic of Nintendo consoles, the GameCube. This game really gives you a great idea of what it would be like to swing through New York as Peter Parker’s alter ego and, let’s face it, that should be what all Spiderman games are about. On top of that, the fighting mechanics are lots of fun, a bit similar to those of the Batman Arkham series, and the slow burner of a story really does end with a bang. Do yourself a favor and get this game.

Red Dead Redemption 2

Rockstar don’t make many games these days. The games they do make, however, take the world by storm, which is exactly what Red Dead Redemption 2 did in 2018 and is still doing now. The open world RPG Wild West action looks beautiful and sees you riding with a gang of outlaws as the world of the old West falls apart around you. RDR2 is a truly beautiful game and at times feels more like a movie than a game. There is now a vibrant multiplayer world to explore too. In other words, it’s an absolute treat.

GTA V

We really don’t have to say too much about Grand Theft Auto V. If you have a PS4, you probably already know all about, what could possibly be, the biggest video game of all time. The fifth game in the GTA series sees you playing as three different characters as you drive, steel, and fight your way to the top of the Los Santos underworld. This game has it all so if you want it all, get this game.

God of War

God of War for PS4

Sony’s God of War series has spanned three different generations of PlayStation console and the latest installment almost feels like a new approach to the established way God of War has always done things. Even though Kratos is still the angry brute you’d expect him to be, there is a much more cerebral feel to the game with challenging puzzles always testing you and smart dialogue betraying a brain behind the brawn. God of War is a PS4 exclusive and looks stunning too, which is just two more reasons why you need it.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare

Call of Duty could be described as the definitive first-person shooter franchise. It has been around for years and when the original Modern Warfare first burst onto the scene it was indisputably the best FPS action game around. A rough patch from the series, however, and a resurgence of the impressive Battlefield franchise saw this position threatened, but last year’s Modern Warfare reboot really did mark a return to form.

FIFA 20

FIFA 20

There used to be a time when FIFA wasn’t the dominant soccer game on the planet and Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer series reigned supreme. That time is no more, and FIFA 20 is the latest in a long line of soccer games that have been the best in the world. FIFA 20 looks amazing, is lots of fun to play, and has some fantastic game modes to draw you in beyond the basic match day simulator.

Horizon Zero Dawn

horizon zero dawn

Another game that looks incredible is Guerilla Game’s Horizon Zero Dawn, which is bit like a mix between Jurassic Park and Transformers. I have to say though, that my rather crude description of this game doesn’t do it justice. This adventure game is massive, and its game world is rich with challenges to master and side quests to experience. Horizon Zero Dawn is essential because simply put, it is one of the best games ever made.

Shadow of the Colossus

Shadow of the Colossus is a remastered PS2 game that now packs a HDR supported 4K punch. In short, it looks truly beautiful and brings with it a unique gameplay experience that can’t be replicated in any other game or on any other console. That’s what makes Shadow of the Colossus a must-have game. It will take you to places other games can’t and will stay with you long after you’ve stopped playing.

Titanfall 2

Titanfall 2 is the sequel to a game that was never actually released on the PlayStation. The good news for all PS4 owners, however, is that the sequel is better than the original in almost every conceivable way. The FPS action Titanfall 2 offers is some of the best that’s ever been created and the mech-like Titans that you pilot, as well as fighting on foot, bring something fresh to the experience too. On top of that, the Titanfall 2 single player campaign is one of the best we’ve ever played.

What Remains of Edith Finch

What remains of Edith Finch on PlayStation

The final game to make our list of essential PlayStation 4 games is about emotion. What Remains of Edith Finch is a powerful game that sees you exploring the main character’s family home and unlocking her family’s history. Every new discovery will have you feeling something different and by the end you’ll be completely refreshed and feel truly exhilarated. This is a magical game that you really shouldn’t miss.

Wrapping up

OK, so this list has missed out a few classics like Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 7, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Bloodborne, Dark Souls, Nier: Automata, and The Last of Us; but we feel that a list of essential games needs to have its limits. The games we’ve laid out above will leave you feeling fulfilled by your PlayStation yet hungry for more.

5 things we DIDN’T see at E3 2019

Did E3 give you enough to slake your thirst, or were you hoping to see more?

Samus

And so, another E3 has come to pass. With it came a lot of games we weren’t expecting to see.  However, there were a bunch of things we were hoping to see but they never graced the stage.

Here are the things we sadly didn’t get to see at E3 2019 that we will hopefully hear more about soon.

Halo Infinite gameplay

At E3 2018, Halo fans went nuts when Halo Infinite was announced.

This year, we were dying to see gameplay for the new game, or at least hear some new cool details. What we got was this:

Sure, it’s kinda cool. However, we don’t want to see a trailer that’s basically a cut scene we will try to skip through on subsequent playthroughs. Why can’t we see Master Chief in action? Why can’t we see new weapons or changes in combat mechanics? Why can’t we hear about what’s coming to online?

We’re happy that we got SOMETHING, but this was hardly worth the year we had to wait.

Anything about the PlayStation 5

So what did Sony bring to E3?

Although Hideo Kojima gave us a new trailer for Death Stranding a few weeks ago, and we got a few new PlayStation 5 details in the months leading up to E3, Sony was notably absent this year.

If Sony would have shown up with just a few details about the PS5, we would have been thrilled. We didn’t even need much; they could have just given us a better idea of when it would be released and potential new features. But no, Sony instead left E3 in the hands of Microsoft and Nintendo.

To be fair, Nintendo kinda killed it at E3 this year. Although, there was one game that we tragically heard nothing about…

Metroid Prime 4

Two years ago at E3 2017, we first saw the announcement trailer for Metroid Prime 4, and we were elated.

However, at the beginning of the year, we got some unfortunate news. The game was going to be delayed.

After already waiting so long to see Samus’s next adventure, it was a kick in the teeth to learn that we were going to have to wait even longer. However, since that announcement was made about five months ago, we were hoping that by now we would get some sort of update on the game. Sadly, we heard nothing.

We’re hoping that Samus isn’t doomed to forever be trapped in the Brinstar Depths, but our hopes of actually playing this game are quickly dwindling.

The Last of Us Part II

To be fair, we already know a LOT about The Last of Us Part II. We got a cool reveal trailer two years ago, and we got more than 10 minutes of gameplay footage last year. However, we are still worried about the release date.

At first, we were optimistic that we would finally get to see what Joel and Ellie have been up to by the end of 2019, but that is looking further and further from the truth.

Death Stranding has a concrete release date of Nov. 6, 2019, and we simply cannot see Sony releasing two games with such massive hype that close together. I mean we are probably going to buy both at launch anyway, but it isn’t a smart move to let two console exclusives compete with each other for sales.

This suggests that The Last of Us Part II will just have to wait until early 2020. However, now we aren’t sure of that either because Cyberpunk 2077 is set to be released in April of 2020. Sure, Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t a PS4 exclusive, but we can’t imagine Sony wanting to compete against that title either. Do you really want to go toe-to-toe with Keanu Reeves?

We didn’t think so.

Elder Scrolls VI

At E3 2018, Bethesda released this 36-second announcement trailer for the next Elder Scrolls game… and it definitively was the most hyped announcement of that year.

One year later, we were hoping to get something more than a glorified JPEG, but we instead got a trailer for Elder Scrolls Online: Elsweyr:

What do we think of that trailer?

We got nothing for Elder Scrolls VI. We didn’t get a release date, we didn’t get a new trailer, and we didn’t even get an official title!

Honestly, if Bethesda didn’t show us Doom: Eternal, they might as well not have come at all.

It was still a pretty awesome E3

At the end of the day, we still got some awesome announcements at E3 2019. Come on people, we got a trailer for a new Zelda game. What more could you ask for?

What games were you hoping to see at E3 this year? Were you satisfied with the lineup, or were you hoping that this would finally be the year for Half Life 3? Let us know in the comments below.

Marvel’s Avengers game paints a world without Captain America

Marvel’s Avengers brings Earth’s mightiest heroes together to face a new threat!

Captain America

If you were looking for a reason to buy a PlayStation 4, this might be it!

Square Enix has released the first trailer for Marvel’s Avengers where you save the day as Earth’s mightiest heroes.

The game is set to come out on May 15, 2020 for both the PS4 and Xbox One. However, you can play the beta version now on PS4. The game will also be available for Google Stadia, which is set to come out in November of this year.

Did… Did Cap just die?

Iron Man Thor

Come on Marvel, we are still getting over Iron Man‘s death in the MCU.

The game starts during a celebration of the Avengers. While unveiling a new high-tech headquarters, an explosion causes the Avengers to take action. While fighting off bad guys and tanks, Captain America jumps aboard a helicarrier to dispatch baddies. However, a massive explosion not only causes massive civilian casualties but the death of Cap himself.

After his death, the remaining Avengers are blamed for the tragedy. As a result, the Avengers disband. However, five years go by and the remaining Avengers spring back into action to face a new threat.

Is Cap going to stay dead? Well, we don’t think so. Cap has died in the comics before and has come back. Also, it appears as though you do play as Cap at the beginning of the game, so we don’t think the game developers would create unique fighting mechanics for Cap, just to not have him in the game later.

Sorry Hawkeye, maybe later

In the game, you appear to play as Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Widow, and Captain America. There are no signs of other Avengers like Hawkeye, Doctor Strange, or Spider-Man.

However, this does provide an opportunity for lots of DLC.

With the huge cast of Marvel characters, we would love to see all of these characters join the fray to help save the world.

What’s gameplay and what’s a cut-scene?

HulkThe trailer does not specify what is actual gameplay and what is a cutscene. Scenes of the Avengers talking together or doing very cinematic scenes are probably cutscenes, but most of the combat looks like genuine gameplay. However, we will have to wait for the next trailer to know for sure.

A stellar voice cast

In order to make a great Avengers game, you need a great cast of actors and actresses. Luckily, Square Enix has given us an absolutely stunning array of voice actors.

In a tweet, the voice cast was revealed:

  • Iron Man: Nolan North
  • Bruce Banner: Troy Baker
  • Black Widow: Laura Bailey
  • Thor: Travis Willingham
  • Captain America: Jeff Schine

You probably know Nolan North best for voicing Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series. Troy Baker has quite the resume himself including the voice of Joel from The Last of Us and Booker Dewitt from Bioshock Infinite. Laura Bailey has provided the voice for Black Widow in several animated Avengers shows. She also voiced Mary Jane Watson in Insomniac’s Spider-Man game. Travis Willingham has been providing the voice for Thor in animated series for years. Jeff Schine has provided voices for Kingdom Hearts III, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Just Cause 4.

Avengers assemble!

If this is half the game Marvel’s Spider-Man was, then we are in for a treat. We are already excited for Ultimate Alliance 3, but this might just be even better!

Google Stadia game service launches this year – here’s what you need to know

The Google Stadia’s Founder’s Edition touts a $129 pricetag.

Stadia

If you’ve been looking forward to Google Stadia, this new info might sour your expectations, but we still have our hopes up!

In order to play Stadia this year, you’ll need to purchase the Founder’s Edition bundle for $129.  On top of that, you’ll pay $9.99/month after the first three months. The monthly subscription to Stadia Pro allows you to play games in 4K and in 5.1 surround sound. The subscription also includes additional “free” games on a regular basis. On top of that, you will still have to pay separately for other games you may want. (There’s other pricing available, but we’ll get to that in a minute.)

That $129 bundle includes an exclusive game controller, a Chromecast Ultra, a copy of Destiny 2, a free three-month subscription, and a buddy pass that gives a friend a free three-month subscription as well. You have to have a Chromecast Ultra in order to play on a TV. If you purchase one outside of this deal, it costs about $60.

A $129 price tag may sound steep, but it’s a far cry from the minimum $300 you’ll pay for a new PlayStation 4.

When the service is released in November, launch games will include Tomb Raider games, Doom, The Division 2, Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, and Destiny 2. Early rumors suggest there will be 31 games available when the service debuts.

New games that have not yet been confirmed to be launch titles include Baldur’s Gate 3 and Ghost Recon: Breakpoint.

Stadia Pro vs Stadia Base

Stadia comparison

Again, the free version (Stadia Base) will not be available until 2020. The biggest difference between the services is the quality. In the free version, you play in 1080p rather than 4K and your game will be in stereo rather than 5.1 surround sound.

You also won’t have access to free games distributed to pro members, and you will not have access to pro deals and discounts.

A mixed bag

Monthly fee

Getting a system and a game for $129 is unheard of by today’s standard. When Microsoft released the Xbox One, it cost $500 at launch. The PlayStation 4 wasn’t much better, costing $400 at launch.

However, the subscription service really seems like a raw deal. Paying a subscription every month really adds up. At $9.99 per month, the service essentially costs an additional $120 per year.

If the price doesn’t change, and the Stadia has a lifespan like the PS4  (six years), then that’s an additional $720. When you add the initial $129 for the controller and other goodies, it’s not far from the same price as the Xbox One and the PS4 combined.

To be fair, both Xbox and PlayStation have subscription services. Depending on your plan, playing Xbox or PlayStation online costs about anywhere between $4 and $9.99 per month. However, that’s just for online play, not for playing the games you already purchased on the system you already purchased.

Why would I want to buy Google Stadia?

Google Stadia

The important thing to point out is that you do not have to pay the subscription fee in order to use Stadia. If that extra $9.99 a month is a sticking point, you don’t have to pay it. After all, playing games in 1080p is still decent.

Putting the price aside, there are some cool features about the Stadia worth mentioning.

First off, you will be able to play across all your screens: TV, smartphone, computers, and tablet. You also don’t have to download or update the games you want to play.

Unfortunately, the only phones you will be able to play games from are the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3a. However, you will be able to purchase games and build your Stadia profile on any Android or iPhones with access to the Stadia app.

The games you buy are streamed from the cloud and will play immediately at 60 fps. Supposedly, you will also be able to click a button and start playing a game in a matter of seconds.

If you want to play with something other than the Stadia controller, you can use a USB controller. However, you must use the Stadia controller and a Chromecast Ultra when playing on a TV. If you want to buy another Stadia controller, it will cost about $70. You can add it in checkout when buying your bundle.

Finally, you do not need a physical console with the Google Stadia. Instead, you are paying for a service, so you don’t have to worry about a cumbersome giant console with wires getting tangled.

Wrapping up

We’d recommend waiting it out for a while to see how the Stadia performs at launch before buying one. However, some of these features do seem too good to pass up. You also have to wonder about how your data cap might hold up when streaming so much 4K 60fps 5.1 content.

When we buy games, we want to play them as soon as possible. We don’t like waiting around for hours on end for a game to download. The Stadia is giving us the opportunity to jump right into the action. At $129 for the service, how do you beat that?

Play PS4 games on your iPhone with a controller

This new feature from iOS brings the PlayStation to your mobile device!

Remote play

Soon, you will be able to play your favorite PlayStation 4 games from your iPhone just like you do on your console!

Earlier this week, Apple announced at WWDC that the new iOS13 and iPadOS will support Xbox One and PlayStation 4 controllers. If you pair that with Sony’s app PS4 Direct Play, you can use the iPhone or iPad as a monitor, while the PS4 controller gives you full control of the game. The feature will be available later this year.

Basically, if you have an iPad or iPhone, you also have a portable PS4. Next time your flight gets delayed and you have a few hours to kill at the airport, you can bust out Overwatch.

The upsides

As it currently sits, you can’t play every game to its full capabilities on Remote Play. For example, you can’t use either of the thumbstick controls. As these are typically used to sprint or crouch in most games, you’re out of luck if they’re necessary to the game.

Luckily, the addition of the controller means that you can play each game as it was intended.

This can really be a game-changer. From now on, if you have a long train ride to work, or if you have downtime after class, you can get playing!

The downsides

Remote Play still requires a console. You could technically connect it to your friend’s PS4 at their house, but you would be playing their save files. We imagine they’d be a bit upset if you deleted their God of War save file to start your own.

If you can charge your iPhone or iPad while playing, you don’t need to worry about depleting your battery. If you can’t, streaming your games from the PS Network on top of actually playing them will surely drain your battery.

How to set up PS4 Remote Play

Remote Play

  1. After downloading the app and turning on your PS4, log into your account on your PS4
  2. Log your PS4 and iPhone onto the same Wi-Fi network
  3. Open the app
  4. Open Settings and log in to your PlayStation Network account
  5. Click the big, blue start button. This will make the app search for your PS4
  6. There’s a chance that it will fail. If it does, do NOT panic
  7. A prompt will pop up asking for a code so you can manually connect the device
  8. On the PS4, go to your Settings, and choose “Remote Play Connection Settings”
  9. From there, choose “Add Devices” where you will see the code
  10. Type the eight-digit code on your app.
  11. Once you’re done, click “Register”
  12. You’re all set!

Wrapping up

One of the worst parts about getting a new game is having to leave it behind while you’re in the middle of something. When Insomniac’s Spider-Man came out last year, we highly debated going on hiatus at work so we could play it. This new feature from iOS means that the game is no longer confined to our living rooms.

We’re psyched to be able to play on the go. We just hope we don’t become video game addicts while we’re at it.

Facing the trials of Tamriel can be difficult by yourself. Thankfully Bethesda has given you many companions to choose from in the massive game of Skyrim.

These followers come in all shapes and sizes, as there are dozens upon dozens that can help you complete the quests you face. Before starting your journey, you should take the time to find the follower you like the most. Here are some of the best followers you can find in The Elder Scrolls V:

8

Best followers in Skyrim

J’Zargo (vanilla)

J'Zargo

One of the only characters from the base game that has no level cap, J’Zargo is one of the easiest and strongest followers you can acquire. His quest becomes available after the first few quests of the College of Winterhold line.

Since his level is uncapped, his destruction magic can reach devastatingly strong levels in the late game. Also, he’s one of the only mages that will keep up with you past level 50. He also has pretty funny commentary on your actions as the game progresses.

Frea (Dragonborn DLC)

Frea

There are only a few followers in the game that are marked as “essential” and have an uncapped level limit. Since Frea is one of them, that means you can bring her for the most dangerous missions and never have to worry about her dying.

She can’t even be killed by you, the Dragonborn. Also, despite being a dual axe wielding tank-ish follower, she will actually use restoration magic when she gets low on health. This allows her to stay in the battle even longer.

Barbas (vanilla)

Barbas

This good boy brings a new definition to “man’s best friend.”

Barbas is a complicated case. He is technically only usable during his quest, but you can also take advantage of this to have multiple followers at once. Most of the time you can only have one humanoid and one animal companion at a time, but since he’s a quest follower, he will join you regardless.

He is also an essential companion that is incredibly powerful. He will never die and consistently do high damage. The downside to using him, however, is his constant barking if you aren’t following his quest. If you’re willing to put up with this though, he can make one of the best followers in the game.

Rieklings (Dragonborn DLC)

Riekling

The only “animal” followers that you can give equipment to, the Rieklings are a group of followers that you gain access to after completing their quest. While technically not essential, you basically have an unlimited supply of them, since you can just go back to their hut and get a new one.

We definitely recommend picking up one of these little guys, as they can help to effectively triple your inventory space along with a humanoid follower.

Serana (Dawnguard DLC)

Serana

From the moment you help this vampire out of her imprisonment, you are able to take advantage of this very powerful necromancer. She can basically give you two companions, as she will consistently reanimate your dead enemies, and provide a constant source of magic damage. Since she is also an essential unit, you never have to worry about her dying in battle.

On top of this, she has many unique interactions with the world as she is the only follower who is able to interact with all crafting areas. This is purely aesthetic, but it can be very fun to watch. If you have an older version of Skyrim, you’ll need the Dawnguard expansion to unlock her, as she is only obtainable from its main questline.

Dark brotherhood initiate (vanilla)

Dark Brotherhood

Along with J’Zargo, these two are the only followers from the base game without a level cap. However, unlike J’Zargo, they are marked as essential, meaning they will never die. If you don’t finish the quest they are associated with while you have them following you, it’s possible to get a second follower along with them.

This is a little exploitative, but even without this, they are a strong follower that anyone can benefit from using. They are also one of the few followers that are able to successfully sneak with the player.

Go on an adventure

If you’re playing Skyrim on the Nintendo Switch or a similar re-released version, you will already have all DLC installed. This means you won’t have to worry about whether you have the DLC to unlock some of these characters.

Hopefully, this list proved to you that there’s a world beyond Lydia.

Watch: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reveal trailer

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare says goodbye to annual passes, and hello to free content!

Modern Warfare explosion

After eight years of waiting, gamers are finally getting the next Modern Warfare game in the Call of Duty lineup. Activision released the trailer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and the hype is real:

To make things even better, we don’t have to wait very long before this comes out. The trailer ends by giving us a release date of Oct. 25 of this year!

New features

Modern Warfare night vision

According to Kotaku, the game will feature the following updates:

  • Modern Warfare will remove annual passes. Instead, it will deliver free maps, content, and post-launch events to all players. Although these features will be free, we don’t know whether or not Activision will include any paid content.
  • The game will feature cross-play support between PC and consoles. We don’t know if Xbox One users can play against PS4 players, but they will be able to play against PC users.
  • The PC version is exclusive to Battle.net
  • Modern Warfare will be on a completely new engine.
  • In the campaign mode, players will traverse through European cities as well as the Middle East.
  • You will be able to play co-op in “Elite Operations.”
  • There will be an “immersive narrative experience” crossing single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer.

What did the trailer show?

Captain Price

If you’re looking for next-level storytelling, Call of Duty simply isn’t the franchise for you. As far as stories go, there really isn’t a single Call of Duty game with a noteworthy story, and this game doesn’t look like it will be an exception. That said, we do get a shot of the return of fan-favorite character Captain Price.

Although the story looks lacking, the graphics look absolutely top notch.

Modern Warfare shoot shootCharacters move throughout the world without the landscape blurring around them. This suggests that the game has low motion blur. Over the past few years, motion blur has made its way into games. Basically, motion blur keeps characters looking crisp when the camera moves while the backgrounds get blurry. The Uncharted series is a prime example of a franchise with big motion blur issues.

Luckily, everything in this game looks crisp no matter how intense things get.

How will this be different from other Call of Duty games?

To be perfectly blunt, Call of Duty games don’t often stray from their winning formula. Call of Duty games consistently sell millions of copies despite the fact that each game feels like more of the same.

However, Activision appears to be atoning for sins of the past, and for that we’re excited. Not having to pay extra for more maps, content, and events is a huge step in the right direction.

Do we think this game is going to be a contender for Game of the Year? Probably not. Death Stranding looks like it will have that on lockdown. However, it does look like it will set a positive tone for Call of Duty games in the future.

12 best games on PS2

What games made the PlayStation 2 such an incredible console?

Upon its release in 2000, the PlayStation 2 quickly became one of the best gaming consoles of all time. By 2019, if you prefer PS4 over XB1, it’s probably because of the exclusive titles: Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, or The Last of Us. Even as far back as the PS2 era, the platform was home to many incredible games. Looking back, here are 12 of our top favorites:

Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King

Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King

A role-playing video game developed by Level-5 and published by Square Enix, Dragon Quest 8: Journey of the Cursed King is the first in the series to have fully three-dimensional cel-shaded visuals, and a huge game world for the player to explore. The nostalgic, simple gameplay and choice to star fewer characters allowed for players to become genuinely invested in their journey. As far as gameplay is concerned, the randomly-occurring battles are reminiscent of Final Fantasy, and would set the stage for turn-based combat for many titles to come.

Okami

Okami

Okami is a true visual delight. A Zelda-inspired adventure game in which you play as the wolf god Amaterasu, you traverse your way through a lush cel-shaded landscape of feudal Japan to save the Earth from the rebirth of wicked gods. You can’t get much more epic than that. Clover Studio created a uniquely picturesque twist on the traditional open world fantasy game, where broad visual strokes accompany memorable puzzles and boss battles. The game’s since been remastered for Xbox One, PS4, and Switch, meaning that even if you don’t currently own a PS2, you can experience the adventure!

Final Fantasy X

Final Fantasy X

There’s hardly a ‘top games’ list that doesn’t include Final Fantasy somewhere, and Final Fantasy X was one of the real outstanding achievements of the PS2. Even today, the graphics still look good, and the strategic turn-based combat remains fresh and compelling. Final Fantasy X continued the long-standing tradition of combining magic and science, a blend that few other game series (save Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura or perhaps the Bioshock series) have accomplished. Even though we had to put up with Tidus and Wakka, we still look back on this title fondly. If you haven’t tried this one, we promise it’s worth a look.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time

By 2003, Prince of Persia wasn’t on anybody’s mind. You were either repressing Prince of Persia 3D from your mind, or reminiscing the days of the prior two entries in the series. As such, Sands of Time really came out of nowhere. Exploration-based platforming, precise controls, a strong plot, and an innovative rewind function, Jordan Mechner easily proved that he and Ubisoft were a creative force to be reckoned with.

Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill 2

Of the eight games in the Silent Hill series, Silent Hill 2 stands out for being the one that best achieves what it set out to do: thoroughly scar the player with psychological horror and nightmarish imagery. It doesn’t go for the cheap jump scares, but for deeper, more impactful, and more intelligent themes: Mental illness, personal guilt, child abuse, and misogyny. Was that real? Was it all in your head? Either way, you won’t come back the same.

God of War 2

God of War 2

God of War set the stage the now-famous Kratos – the god-killing, testosterone-packed hero who tackles Olympus and raises a son in his spare time. Kratos picks his Blades of Chaos back up in God of War 2, leading the action-adventure genre charge with larger, gorier, fiercer and better-looking visuals – even on the then-aging PS2. If you’re a fan of Greek mythology you’ll love this game. If you love taking to Greek mythology’s best monsters with a sharp blade while soaring on wings that you stole from Icarus, you’ll love it even more.

Shadow of the Colossus

Shadow of the Colossus

Shadow of the Colossus starts you off in an empty world. There’s little living, there’s little dialogue. You’ve only your trusty sword, a steed, and a task: Destroy 16 colossi to resurrect Mono. In a narrative that’s sparse and tragic, the world does much of the story-telling for you. Travel long distances, watch the plot slowly build around you, and The fights are not just simple button-mashers, either; they’re puzzles to be solved. Shadow of the Colossus has gone down as one of the greatest games to ever grace the PS2, and it’s a title that every gamer should play at least once.

Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4

Silent Hill 2’s horror was psychological. Resident Evil 4‘s horror is more what you’d classically expect in a video game: Run-and-gun shooting, creepy cultists, limited ammo, tough bosses, and of course more zombies than you can shake a big chainsaw at. The game isn’t really “scary,” per se, it’s an extremely fun romp through traditional horror set pieces, non-linear maps, and a priority of gameplay over needless jump scares. RE4 was a huge influence for every third-person shooter that followed it, and few have matched it.

Kingdom Hearts

Kingdom Hearts

While there are many amazing games for the PS2, Kingdom Hearts is usually the reason you’d buy one in the first place. You can pilot gummi ships to ferry between worlds, each of which is unique and interesting, and if you’re a fan of JRPGs then you should own this game. No exceptions. All that, and we’re not even scratching the surface of why this game is so memorable: They combined Final Fantasy and Disney and somehow made it work, and work well. That’s an achievement … if you can get past the oddball absurdity of embarking on an adventure with Donald Duck and Goofy.

Guitar Hero

Guitar Hero

There’s not a gamer out there unfamiliar with Guitar Hero. Heck, there was even a “South Park” episode about it. Guitar Hero was the genre-defining rhythm game that spawned numerous offshoots, such as Rock Band, DJ Hero, and Ultimate Band. With five colored buttons and a potpourri of classic tracks, inviting over a friend or two and working to master a song made you feel like a real rock star.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

What can be said of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater? The game is another Hideo Kojima masterpiece (maybe even his best work) that stars Naked Snake (soon to be Big Boss) on the journey that sets him on the path of darkness. You’ll battle the Cobra Unit, sneak through the soldier-infested jungles and mangroves of Russia, destroy super weapons, and finally take on the legendary Boss herself in an emotional showdown that still brings a tear to our eye. The title moves the action from urban environments to the forest, forcing you to use camouflage to hide in plain sight, heal your wounds with a field pack, and hunt animals to survive. There’s content galore, and Konami’s really at the top of their game with this masterpiece. One of the best titles for PS2, and one of the best titles ever.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

GTA 3 was a huge innovation, and Vice City did all those innovations better, but it was San Andreas that widened the scope to jaw-dropping effect. Carl Johnson starts off as a no-name thug in a petty turf war in Los Santos, but rises through the game as a man with a family, a personality, and a real destiny. By the time you’re busting into Area 51 to steal a jetpack for the CIA you’ll have to take a step back and think how far you’ve come. With a vast area to explore, gang wars to quell, and sports cars to steal for joyriding, San Andreas sold over 27.5 million copies worldwide as of 2011, and remains the best-selling PlayStation 2 game of all time.

Best exclusive games for each console

Some people like Nintendo, some like Sony. But when it comes to the big three consoles, who has the best exclusives?

God of War 4

The grass is greener on the other side… or is it?

Some people buy consoles for the tech specs. They want the PS4 because the graphics look crisper They want the Xbox because the user interface works like a charm. They want the Switch because it’s portable and versatile.

When it comes down to it, tech specs aren’t always the game changer. In the end, whatever console you choose comes down to one thing — preferences.

This may be controversial, but we believe exclusive games are the real difference between consoles! In fact, they’re so important we almost find ourselves annoyed by the disparity. PS4 players are clearly hogging God of War and Spider-Man. Thank goodness Xbox has Halo and Forza!

So, to see where the grass grows greenest, we compiled each main consoles’ three best exclusives in one place.

Best exclusive console games

PlayStation 4
PLayStation 4

Sony’s PlayStation 4 appears to have some of the biggest exclusives by far. We were hard-pressed to sort through honorable mentions like Horizon: Zero Dawn and Bloodborne to choose the greatest among them.

We should note: these exclusives are suspiciously only single-player, story-driven games. It seems the best multiplayer exclusives lie elsewhere…

Okay, we’re just trying to be fair to the others; this lineup rocks!

god of war 4

God of War 4God of War 4 received universal acclaim for its storyline, gameplay, graphics, and more. It was voted Game Award’s Game of the Year, a coveted title.

If you’re unaware, the story goes a little something like this: After the death of his wife, Faye, the god-killing Spartan warrior Kratos journeys with his son Atreus to the “highest peak of the nine realms.” From there, they plan to spread her ashes and complete her last wish.

On the way, they get into a bit of a tussle; the world serpent Jörmungandr shows up, Norse gods stop by to party, it’s a whole thing.

Kratos swings around his mighty ax, making you feel like Thor swinging around Mjolnir. If action games are your jam, this is the game for you.

This one is well worth the price, and you will not be disappointed.

marvel’s spider-man

Marvel's Spider-ManWe loved Spider-Man games ever since we tried our first on the GameCube! Swinging through New York City, fighting bad guys, and inevitably jumping off the Empire State Building was a blast!

If you haven’t jumped off the ESB, have you really played Spider-Man?

Fast forward 16 years: in the midst of the MCU adventure, Insomniac Games creates a PS4 exclusive with all the majestic charm of the MCU. Swing through the streets of a Manhattan and fight bad guys!

This time, Peter Parker is dealing with a convoluted conspiracy that centers around the bioweapon Devil’s Breath. Naturally, everyone wants it: from Kingpin to Osborne to Doc Ock. Good luck with all that, Parker!

Marvel’s Spider-Man gives you all the tools you need for your web-slinging experience.

uncharted 4: A Thief’s end

Uncharted 4Nathan Drake, the infamous thief, goes on one last journey.

Metal Gear games are known for being cinematic experiences that play out like a James Bond flick, where the player gets to be the spy. Uncharted thrusts the player into a similarly movie-like experience, However, rather than venturing into a military melodrama, you go on an adventure with all the swashbuckling excitement of Indiana Jones!

Drake’s brother, Sam, reappears after years of imprisonment and asks Nate for help. They must retrieve the treasure of the pirate captain Henry Avery or he will be killed by a drug lord. Together, they race to find the loot against their former financier and the cause of Sam’s imprisonment.

The epic end to a legendary story doesn’t disappoint! The story is thrilling, the combat is fluid is fast-paced, and the exploration has never been better!

Nintendo Switch

Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch doesn’t have as many exclusive titles as we’d like. However, we are excited for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, coming out later this year.

The Switch is unlike anything on the market. Players can play games from home or on the go all on the same console. If you want, you can play something like the L.A. Noire remake or Saints Row: The Third remake at home, or race against friends in Mario Kart on the go!

The Legend of zelda: breath of the wild

Zelda breath of the wild

Throughout time, many heroes by the name of Link fought to defend Hyrule and its princess, Zelda, from the evil Ganondorf. Each of them succeeded in warding off the darkness after a great journey…

Until now.

After 10,000 years of safety, Calamity Ganon reappears and turns Hyrule’s ancient, advanced robotics against them. Link falls in battle, and their heroes are killed. As a result, Zelda has to use the power of the gods to hold Ganon at bay for a long, long time…

Then Link wakes after 100 years of recuperation in a stasis chamber and begins his quest anew. Monsters roam the land, the robotics still control Hyrule’s capital, and Zelda’s power won’t hold much longer.

He failed once, but the hero is back in the game.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is a massive open world game. The developers allow the player to play the game however they want to. Players can complete dungeons in whatever order they want in this very non-linear game. If you want, you can grab the Master Sword and all of the best armor you can find. However, you can also collect all the tree branches and rusty swords you can find and challenge Ganon in your undies.

The choice is yours.

super mario odyssey

SMO

Yep: Mario loses Peach again.

In order to save her this time, he joins a sentient hat named Cappy, whose sister has been stolen by Bowser for use as Peach’s wedding tiara!

However, Cappy has a few tricks up his sleeve… if hats had sleeves.

Cappy has the ability to let Mario take control of nearby creatures. When under Mario’s control, you have full access to their abilities. You can become a T-Rex and destroy everything in your path. You can become a Hammer Bro and throw an onslaught of hammers at enemies. The choices seem nearly endless.

There are a ton of worlds to choose from and a ton of things to do. Cappy’s introduction adds a fresh level to the game, and the new worlds and enemies all have the familiar Nintendo charm.

This addition to the Mario Bros world holds up so well. In fact, many would argue it belongs higher than Breath of the Wild. If you agree or disagree, let us know in the comments!

Will Mario games ever go out of style? We hope not.

super smash bros: ultimate

Super Smash Bros Ultimate

This is the definitive party multiplayer. Got an argument? “Settle it in Smash.”

Oddly enough, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate performs double-duty here. Not only does it reach the top 3 for Nintendo exclusives, it champions every single one of their other characters and games.

You can play as characters from Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Star Fox, Xenoblade Chronicles, Pokémon, Kirby, Animal Crossing, and more!

Smash Bros. players range from the pros who compete in huge tournaments, to newbies who mash buttons and hope for the best.

The game now also features customizable stages. However, those are another story…

All of these characters blend perfectly in one of the greatest titles of our favorite fighting game series! (No offense to Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter fans.)

Honorable Mentions

  2. Splatoon 2
  3. Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Xbox One

Xbox one

Xbox has some of the most surprising games. These are titles you wouldn’t immediately think of when someone says “exclusives.”

Except Halo. Everyone would think of Halo.

Xbox is a bit tricky. Most of their exclusive titles aren’t necessary console exclusive. They are exclusive to Microsoft but can be played on both home console and with Windows 10.

halo 5

Halo 5

Oh yeah.

When the super-soldier Master Chief, goes rogue in pursuit of his AI friend Cortana, an elite team called Spartan Locke goes on a mission to track him down. Through their collective adventures, we gain insight into the mysterious happenings surrounding the Guardians, huge beasts controlled by an artificial intelligence network known as the Domain.

Aside from quick-moving, futuristic, first-person shooter gameplay, you can find one of the greatest video game storylines here. We even like the book series, which continues to release novels yearly!

The world still feels great, and we’re excited for Infinite!

gears of war 4

Gears of War 4

Years after the defeat of the Locust, a new aggressor arrives: The Swarm.

Gears of War 4’s oddly emotional storyline shouldn’t mesh so well with the violent, chainsaw-borne violence. Somehow, it does, and it does really well.

This time, the Lancer falls in the hands of Marcus Fenix‘s son, J.D. The only appropriate response to a new invasion is to buckle down, crouch behind the ubiquitous shoulder-high walls, and keep firing!

forza: horizon 4

Forza 4

This is one of those games that your grandfather will confuse with a movie or real-life sporting event. In all honesty, it has tricked us, too.

Forza has long been lauded as an excellent, realistic driving simulator with all the safety benefits of being a video game. This basically means if you’re still too much of a kid at heart to drive between the lines, you can crash some of the nicest cars known to man!

Wrapping Up

“Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.” Or, in this case, exclusives lead to jealousy, jealousy leads to hate, and hate leads to the console wars! Don’t be a console crusader, friend.

When it comes down to it, we wish every one of these titles were available for every console, even though such a move wouldn’t make any sense from a business standpoint for developers. Still, could you imagine playing Breath of the Wild with the controls and graphics the PS4 can offer?

Exclusives bring business. To play them all, you’ll just have to buy more consoles or borrow from friends. While you’re at it, whoop their butts at Smash Bros. real quick.
