Artists from various domains are uniting to confront the challenges generative AI poses. From AI-generated music that mimics popular artists to AI-crafted visual content on social media, the impact of artificial intelligence on creative works is undeniable. Simultaneously, there’s a growing discourse on how to navigate this new technological wave without causing harm to artistic communities.

#AIdayofaction: Uniting for Artistic Rights

This week, Fight for the Future, a digital rights organization, joined up with United Musicians and Allied Workers, a music industry labor group, to launch the #AIdayofaction campaign. The major goal is to persuade Congress to intervene and prohibit businesses from acquiring copyrights to AI-generated music and art. You can visit the website here.

The basic idea behind this endeavor is to avoid business behemoths, such as large record labels, from monopolizing the rights to AI-created music and art. This action would force big firms to include individuals in the creative process. While these problems and methods are most visible in the music industry, they apply to all creative fields, said TechCrunch.

The fragmented nature of creative domains, according to Lia Holland, Campaigns and Communications Director of Fight for the Future, where different artistic forms often function in isolation. She stressed the power of collaboration, adding, “When artists from diverse fields unite, their influence multiplies.”

Balancing automation and creativity

The campaign isn’t just about preventing corporate misuse of AI technology. It admits that individual artists and creatives can profit from automation. The idea is to turn AI tools into assets that allow human creators to earn more while working less and competing with profit-driven enterprises.

Because of their expertise with music production software and AI tools such as MIDI drum loops, musicians, in particular, have a greater understanding of AI ideas. This understanding enables them to efficiently use technology to improve their craft, TechCrunch added.

The convergence of art and AI, on the other hand, poses difficult challenges. Musicians are concerned that industry titans would copyright AI-generated music, so excluding human composers. Major record labels, on the other hand, are leery of AI models that could mimic their huge song collections and limit profitability. The recent debut of an AI-powered DJ by Spotify shows the intersection of technology and music.

Concerns were raised by Universal Music Group after an AI-generated song resembled Drake and The Weeknd, two of its artists, and gained popularity. The group questioned whose side of history music business stakeholders should support: artists, fans, and human creation, or permitting profound fakes and denying artists of proper recompense.

These same debates and paradoxes are taking place across the creative industries, yet artists are frequently sidelined from decision-making processes. Independent artists are realizing that when they band together across disciplines to resist the prevalent “extraordinary spectrum of exploitation” that exploits their work, their voices carry more weight.

Is a machine capable of creating valid and exciting artistic and creative material? Can an artificial intelligence understand human feelings and make us emotional?

Whenever I need something new, I know I can count on you to help me.” It may not be the best poem ever created, but for a poem created by ChatGPT in just fifteen seconds, it could be worse. Right now, poetry without copyright or human hands doesn’t interest us in the slightest. It has no quality, metrics, rhyme… Or knowledge of human feelings. But this has only just begun.

However, ChatGPT 4 is capable of doing more extraordinary things, such as talking about climate change in Shakespearean style, but it still keeps the question hanging over our heads: Is it art? Is a machine capable of creating valid and exciting artistic and creative material? Can an artificial intelligence understand human feelings and make us emotional?

To prove it, we asked ChatGPT 3 to write us a poem about love and spring. “Love blooms like flowers in spring, when the days are longer and the sun shines brighter. Hearts are filled with joy and hope, as nature renews itself with gentle caresses,” she tells us. She wouldn’t win any contests but it’s only fair to point out that the program was born on November 30, 2022 and she has a lot to learn.

If creativity is the unusual, the unique, the never-before-seen, AI-created poetry lags behind because it is very unlikely that they can, at least for now, do anything other than try to replicate the human brain. Or, put another way, “They are sooner made to imitate than to be original. They learn to say the least surprising thing”, as Guillermo Marco and Julio Gonzalo write in El País.

To put it another way: if the result is fun and original, it’s because the basis itself is. If we ask ChatGPT to make us a Becquer-style poem about a man using a fork to poke into a socket, the result will seem original, but it is only because the initial idea is original: as the program is designed to preserve the meaning of the text, the aesthetic extravagances have to come from outside, with the human hand as the orchestra conductor.

If there is no intentionality there can be no art, and artificial intelligence, however useful it may be, is not yet capable of reflecting and understanding human feelings so much that its poems have a motive or a reflection behind them. Oh, and as you had been left wanting: “A curious man, eager to know, approached the socket with a fork in his possession. But danger lurked there, and his curiosity was going to cost him.” Pure poetry for a day like today.

The BBC is working its own version of Alexa and Google Assistant

Amazon’s Alexa and the Google Assistant are everywhere now. It is fair to say that AI assistants have caught on a big way, even if they’re still far from perfect products. One of the ways that AI assistants can improve is through better understanding the commands we throw at them. If you’re an American reader, you might not feel like this is an issue that needs too much attention. Across the pond, however, British users might understand a little more as often US-developed AI assistants can struggle with different regional accents from across the British Isles.

For such a small place, the UK has a lot of diverse accents and more often than not Alexa and the like can’t get to the bottom of them. This has led to the British Broadcasting Corporation, more famously known as the BBC, taking things into its own hands.

An in-house team at the BBC is working on a new voice assistant called Beeb, with a hope to launch in 2020. According to a report by the Guardian, there are no plans to launch any standalone hardware product to go with Beeb. There are plans, however, to integrate Beeb into other BBC products like the iPlayer app on smart TVs, and the corporation’s website. There are also plans to make Beeb available to other manufacturers who might want to use the smart assistant in their products.

The Guardian reports that the Beeb team have been recording the voices of BBC staff up and down the British Isles in a bid to train the assistant on all the different accent and dialect variations the UK has to offer.

Although Beeb will have a wake word like the Google and Amazon offerings, the BBC smart assistant won’t be able to perform nearly as many skills as the US-developed alternatives. When it launches next year, users will be able to activate the BBC smart assistant by calling out “Beeb” but will then be limited to the types of skills you’d expect a media corporation to need their AI assistant to be able to understand. The main function, however, will be understanding regional accents.

There is no word in the report on whether BBC will allow the likes of Alexa and Google Assistant to take advantage of its regional accent understanding abilities. It doesn’t look likely, however, as a BBC spokesperson claimed another reason behind Beeb’s development is a lack of trust in the other assistants. The spokesperson said, “People know and trust the BBC, so it will use its role as public service innovator in technology to ensure everyone – not just the tech-elite – can benefit from accessing content and new experiences in this new way.”

If you’re a British user of either Google Assistant of Amazon Alexa, then you probably shouldn’t be expecting Beeb to start helping your AI assistant to understand you any better some time soon. That doesn’t mean they won’t start working on your accent independently though. As is usually the case with big tech firms, if they see a good idea, they’ll likely try to copy it. With voice control being one of the main draws that AI assistants bring to our smart homes, and with the UK being such a big and lucrative market, working on understanding regional accents there is definitely a good idea. Or as they say in Liverpool, a boss idea. Definitely one that could spread.

Modern technology poses us with many quandaries, but they usually boil down to having to give something up in order to receive some other sort of benefit. We’ve sacrificed privacy for better connectivity for example. Another little trade-off we’re constantly having to consider is ease of use versus security. The more we rely on technology, the easier it becomes for somebody to hijack our digital personas and take advantage of them.

A good example of this is voice control. When it works, being able to simply tell your phone what to do is a revelation. You can interact with the world without having to get your phone out of your pocket.

It is inherently insecure though, as our voices are easily mimicked. How do we deal with this trade-off? Is there a way to make voice activation more secure or are we just going to have to choose between easier or more secure?

Unfortunately, it looks like there is no magic wand to wave here. Google is working on a new policy feature, but it isn’t a solution to our quandary. Whereas at the moment Google is erring on the side of security, the internet giant is testing voice-to-text messaging that you can send from your lock screen using Google Assistant. This means you might soon be able to send a text message while your phone is in your pocket, but then, so will anybody else who sounds like you.

The new Google Assistant text from lock screen feature has been spotted by 9 to 5 Google on one of their Pixel 3 devices running Android 9 Pie. The feature works much like the current “send a text” skill. All you have to do is tell Google Assistant to send a text and specify the body of the message and the name of the recipient. The big difference now though, is that Google Assistant will actually send the message instead of prompting you to unlock your phone before doing so.

There aren’t many other reports of this and interestingly, the feature doesn’t seem to be running on devices running the Android Q beta. This indicates that Google is still A/B testing this new feature and will no doubt be collecting data on how it has been working on select devices and how users have been interacting with it.

There is no doubt that this would be a very useful addition to any phone’s set of features. Also, with Assistant being a part of the Google app, should it get through this testing phase all Android phones should get it and not just Pixel devices.

This could see people going back to their regular old SMS apps, especially considering how hard Google has worked on turning into a modern internet messaging machine to rival the likes of WhatsApp and Messenger.  The only thing to consider will be the security trade-off.

Google leads the pack in a number of fields. From internet search to internet browsers via email clients and smartphone operating systems, the search giant has an impressive portfolio of apps and products that are the best in their field. There is another key area though, where Google excels and that is AI.

Thanks to the huge amounts of internet data Google is able to collect and subsequently use to train its AI, the machine learning algorithms at Google are able to power a lot of cool features in all those leading products we’ve already mentioned.

It seems though, that there is a particular type of data Google currently needs for its AI that the internet itself can’t serve up alone. Not only that, but it looks like the search giant is willing to pay you to get it. If you feel comfortable selling your face to Google, then you might be able to earn yourself the princely sum of $5.

Selling your face to Google sounds like a rather terrifying prospect, but according to the guys at ZDNet the process is quick and, rather reassuringly, painless. The whole process takes around five minutes and mostly involves you pointing the selfie camera of a modified smartphone at your face from a number of different angles.

The people at Google aren’t after your actual face; they just want to gather as much information about it as they can get their hands on. So far so good then, but what do they want all of this facial data for?

In the account given on ZDNet, the Google employees are approaching people on the street and saying something like, “Hi, I work for Google and we’re collecting data to improve the next generation of facial recognition phone unlocking.”

Google needs scans of your face so that it can teach its AI how to recognize certain unique facial features. This is likely to be related to the facial biometric security system that Google is rumored to be working on for the upcoming Pixel 4 handset.

When a similar incident took place involving a somebody over at Android Police, all the Google employees said was that the scans were for a “future Google product,” which sounds a little vague for something as personal as scan of your face.

With the recent hysteria surrounding the viral FaceApp, would you hand over detailed scans of your face to a company whose motto is no longer “Don’t be evil” for a mere $5 gift card to Amazon or Starbucks?

Researchers have discovered a number of different scams relating to FaceApp.

If you haven’t seen an aged version of a friend or family member recently you’ve either been living in a cave somewhere or you’ve possibly been the victim of some sort of unknown EMP-type event. FaceApp has taken the internet by storm with its realistic AI aging filter. FaceApp is an AI-powered photo manipulation app that has a few different filters, but it is the aging filter that has garnered so much popularity recently.

The FaceApp aging filter has become so popular that there are plenty of people out there who would be willing to pay for a premium version of the free app. If you’re one of those people or you know somebody who might be one of them remember this; there is no premium version of FaceApp. If you find a premium version of FaceApp it is a scam.

Researchers have discovered a number of different scams relating to FaceApp

The first scam highlighted by security researcher Lukas Stefanko on the We Live Security blog relates to a fake pro version of FaceApp like the one detailed above. The “pro” version of the app is advertised on a fake website.

What’s worse, the “pro” version is advertised as a “free premium” app, which doesn’t even make any sense. All the website will do is push users to click an endless number of ads, sign up to various subscriptions, and view special offers for other paid apps.

After what must have seemed like an eternity’s worth of clicks, all Stefanko and his team ended up with was the regular version FaceApp that is available on the Google Play Store.

Another scam Stefanko’s team have uncovered comes via YouTube videos. Their blog post shows a YouTube video that has well over 150,000 views, which again describes a fake “pro” version of FaceApp. The YouTube videos also contain shortened links in their descriptions where users can download the fake apps. In reality, much like with the fake website scam, these only lead users to apps that are simply designed to deliver ads to the unsuspecting user.

What’s worse about these YouTube scams is that shortened links offer scammers a great way to make people go to sites that are infected with malware.

Shortened links can hide a lot of the key giveaways that we should look out for when we suspect a link could be fake or malicious. Although, this isn’t the case with any of the shortened links the We Live Security team found, relating to the fake “pro” versions of FaceApp, we still need to be careful.

The key takeaway here is to not allow ourselves to become too carried away by viral hype and lose our senses in the process. Stefanko has this important message, that we should all remember when there is a viral app doing the rounds. “Hype attracts scammers, and the bigger the wave, the higher the risk of falling victim of a scam. Before joining the hype, users should remember to stick to basic security principles.

Regardless how exciting the topic is, avoid downloading apps from sources other than official app stores, and examine available information about the app (developer, rating, reviews, etc.). Especially in the Android ecosystem.” Fake apps are a common problem, but they’re particularly dangerous when everybody is talking about the newest big thing.

Instagram tests new anti-bullying features

Instagram now asks bullies if they’re sure they want to post harmful content and offers new “Restrict” capabilities to users!

In a recent blog post, Instagram reaffirmed its commitment to lead the fight against online bullying. This isn’t the first time we’ve covered Instagram’s efforts and it is good to see the most aesthetically-minded of all the social networks taking efforts to protect its users against online abuse. Mental health is fragile on social media and Instagram users can often castigate themselves even before the bullies get a chance to.

This is why it was refreshing to see Instagram remove the “like” counter on posts, which itself continued on from anti-bullying action it took back in October. This action included introducing an AI algorithm that hunts out bullying sentiment and the promotion of anti-bullying campaigns across the network. So, with Instagram reaffirming this mission, let’s have a look at the new actions the social network is promoting.

Instagram’s anti-bullying efforts

The first major feature uses the anti-bullying AI we mentioned earlier, and forces bullies to reconsider their potentially harmful actions. Whenever an Instagram user moves to post content that the AI flags as potentially offensive, Instagram will let them know and ask them if they’re sure they want to post it.

Instagram claims that early tests of this feature, “… have found that it encourages some people to undo their comment and share something less hurtful once they have had a chance to reflect.”

Although this action might not sound like much, it is worth noting at this point that some bullies won’t consider themselves to be bullies and might not even be aware that the comments they’re making could be harmful to the person who is on the receiving end.

The second action Instagram has taken is a move to protect the victims of online bullying.

“Restrict” gives users the chance to control the comments and posts that they have to interact with on Instagram without notifying any users whose content might fall under the limits of the new feature. This feature comes directly from feedback the social network has received from users, who’ve said, “… they’re reluctant to block, unfollow, or report their bully because it could escalate the situation, especially if they interact with their bully in real life.”

Whenever a user restricts another user, their comments will remain visible to them as they always have done but the restrictor, or anybody else viewing the original post, will not be able to see them. The feature also gives the restrictor the power to make the restricted comments visible, should they be suitable. Another cool feature is that all users you’ve restricted won’t know when you’re online or be able to see, if you’ve read their direct messages.

Wrapping up

Both of these features mark positive tools for Instagram users falling on both sides of the bullying relationship. Hopefully, over time their positive effect will become well-known with bullies making less hurtful comments and victims being able to control who sees anything negative said about them on any of their posts.
