‘The Irishman’ trailer shows why Scorsese is the king of gangster movies

“The Irishman” chronicles the demise of Jimmy Hoffa and the man who claims to have killed him.

Pacino

The trailer for Martin Scorsese’s new movie “The Irishman” is finally here, and it looks incredible

As you can tell, this is one star-studded cast. You got Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Anna Paquin, Jesse Plemons, Harvey Keitel, and the triumphant return of Joe Pesci! Also, Italian comedians Sebastian Maniscalco and Ray Romano even have roles in this movie!

The background

Hoffa

The movie revolves around De Niro as Frank Sheeran as he chronicles his involvement in Jimmy Hoffa’s ( Al Pacino) death and disappearance. The movie is based on the book “I Heard You Paint Houses” by Charles Brandt. Before he died, Sheeran told Brandt about his involvement with Jimmy Hoffa. In case you didn’t know, Hoffa was the president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, and he mysteriously went missing in 1975. Although he was declared dead after being missing for years, a body has never been found. According to the book, the union leader’s relationship with the mafia resulted in his death.

After not appearing in a movie in nearly five years, Joe Pesci is returning to film as Russell Bufalino, the real-life head of the Bufalino Crime Family.

Hoffa had hired Sheeran as a hitman, and for muscle to help in the fight against rival unions. Bufalino put Hoffa in touch with Sheeran. The phrase “I Heard You Paint Houses,” was the password Hoffa said to Sheeran to let him know that he needed his hitman services.

Why do they look so young?

The Irishman

If you didn’t notice, many of these legendary actors look much younger in several scenes in this movie than they do in real life. The filmmakers used CGI to de-age the actors so they can appear 30 years younger.

It is a little upsetting that the filmmakers are resorting to using CGI rather than make-up to de-age their actors. If you remember, more than 10 years ago, the film “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” shocked the world with the incredible make-up used to change the ages of the actors.

The CGI effect still looks pretty good, and we’re guessing that since several of the stars in this film are pushing 80, they didn’t want to be stuck in a make-up chair for hours.

Wrapping up

“The Irishman” is truly a passion project for Scorsese, and there is already a boatload of Oscar buzz around it already.

Scorsese has made several incredible organized crime movies throughout the ages including “GoodFellas,” “Casino,” “Gangs of New York,” and “The Departed.” Scorsese does a phenomenal job of taking larger-than-life criminals and making them both human and vulnerable.

Video is NSFW

The movie is set to come out on Netflix this fall, and will also have a limited release in select theaters.

Have you tried Waze Carpool? It just got better

Waze now lets you add up to four other carpool riders to your journey!

Waze carpool feature

With all the new tools that are being added to Waze, it’s about time we got a decent carpooling option!

You may know Waze as that app Google bought a while back. It has since been taking features from to bolster Google Maps. Google is clear that Google Maps is still its flagship navigation program but understands that Waze offers something different enough to Maps to warrant a spot of its own in the Google Play Store.

Waze is a community-based navigation app. The mapping data shows us where we are and where we’re going. Also, Waze asks its users to tell each other what is going on during their journeys and then uses all that data to improve the routing options it offers. It now even tells users about upcoming toll prices. When Google recently added crowd-sourced speed trap alerts to Google Maps, the feature came from Waze, which had had it for years.

With Waze being built upon its community it will probably come as no surprise that the company has been dabbling with carpools for years now. Carpools are like the ultimate form of commuting community as it can help save time, money, and the environment. The Waze Carpool app first hit the scene in Israel back in 2015 and came to the U.S. last year. It is also available in Brazil and Mexico. The app has always been a little limited, however, with potential carpools being limited to two app users. This has now finally been expanded, turning Waze Carpool into a more complete ride-sharing app.

Waze now lets you add up to four other carpool riders to your journey

To use the Waze carpooling feature, you need to add your daily routine and schedule to the app. This way you have a number of set routes and rides that the app knows you’re likely to make. Then, each day when you confirm the rides you’ll actually be taking that day, the app will match you up with other users who are looking to make similar journeys.

You’ll be able to see how much extra time they’ll add to your journey and how much money you’ll be able to collect off them for adding them to your carpool. You can find all the details for signing up to Waze Carpool here.

Source: Waze

The carpooling feature has just been boosted from two riders to four. This means you can now add up to four riders to your pool, potentially boosting the amount of money you can take per journey and even opening up the more express HOV 3+ carpool lanes.

Waze makes it clear in the blog post announcing the bump up to four riders, however, that Waze Carpooling is not supposed to be a moneymaker. It isn’t another Uber or Lyft. All prices added to carpooling journeys are adjusted so that they don’t exceed the price of the gas the journey needs or general wear and tear to the vehicle.

If you’re looking for help with your daily gas money, a bit of company during your daily commute, or just want to do your bit for the environment Waze Carpool could be the app for you.

Facebook Like and Share buttons may be removed from third-party websites?

The ECJ has ruled that websites using the Facebook “Like” button are responsible for the user data they send to Facebook.

Lots of Facebook like buttons

The Facebook Like button is an iconic symbol of what 21st-century life has become. We can use it to show the world that we like pretty much anything we see online. Your friend posts about something funny they’ve just done, Like it. A local bar is running a special on chicken wings during NFL matches, definitely Like that. Oh, it’s summertime and the sun is shining you say? Yep, I’m going to like that too.

The Facebook Like button and other alternatives from different social networks have become so ubiquitous that more often than naught, we tap them as soon as we feel anything remotely positive. In fact, there is a lot more going on with “Like” and “Share” buttons, a lot more. So much in fact, that they might be about to start disappearing from third-party websites.

8

This ruling might change everything

The reason we’ve slipped into the habit of liking everything we do online is because the like button and others of its ilk have popped on all sorts of websites all over the web. Now, however, thanks to a ruling in the ECJ on a case involving a website called Fashion ID, this might all be about to change.

In 2015, a German consumer group called Verbraucherzentrale NRW (we’ll just refer to them as NRW from now on) sought an injunction against a website called Fashion ID. Basically, NRW claimed that the Facebook Like button on the Fashion ID site was sending data to Facebook that users didn’t consent to share.

The ECJ has ruled that since the Like button provided a financial benefit to Fashion ID, it is responsible for the user data the button collects and shares.

a like on mobile
WE share a lot of data about ourselves when we visit pages that have like buttons. This new ECJ ruling will mean pages that have them will have to tell us what that data is so that we can give them permission to then share it with a third-party website like a social network.

The move means that when two parties, a social network and a third-party website, both benefit from a social button then both must share responsibility for the user-data collected. Both will need permission, and both will need to make sure their digital infrastructures are compliant with privacy laws and regulations.

With global GDPR changes still fresh in everybody’s minds due to Europe being a regulatory superpower, there is a good chance this judgement could affect websites all over the world and not just in the EU.

Wrapping up

Do you think Facebook’s Like and Share buttons should be removed? Are they causing more trouble than they are worth? Let us know in the comments below!

Siri is listening in on your private conversations

Siri has recorded drug deals, doctor visits, and even sexual activity!

Siri

It’s looking like Siri is one bad apple.

People working for Apple have heard users talking about confidential medical info, buying drugs, and even having sex, according to an article from The Guardian.

How are they hearing this? They’re doing it through Siri!

Contractors hired by Apple are paid to listen to user recordings. Their job is to grade the responses that Siri is giving to determine if it is functioning properly. The problem is that Siri sometimes picks up on something inappropriate, and has been known to wake and record unintentionally.

These contractors are working to improve Siri’s human understanding so that it only wakes when it is supposed to wake up. They’re also working to make sure Siri actually says something of value when you ask it a question.

When you hear about issues like this, the first thing that comes to mind is probably all of the issues with Amazon’s Alexa listening in on users. Unfortunately, Siri is just as guilty as Alexa.

Should I be worried?

This information came from a whistleblower who worked for one of these contracting firms. They chose to remain anonymous but came forward as they thought the lack of disclosure from Apple was so egregious.

In a statement to the Guardian, Apple said that the recordings are not tied to a user’s Apple ID.  However, according to the whistleblower, the recordings typically come with location information, contact information, and app data.

What should I do if I have an iPhone?

We’re not going to act like there aren’t also security issues or concerns with Android.

There’s no need to throw your iPhone in the nearest blender. However, you might want to disable Siri from listening in on you. On your iPhone, go to Settings and choose “Siri & Search.” From here, if you tell Siri to stop listening and if you remove the option to “Press Home for Siri,” you’ll get the option to turn it off altogether.

At Apple’s recent WWDC, the company gave users tons of information in a huge privacy push that they are making. It looks like the company really needs to put more effort into how Siri works, and what she listens to without your knowledge.

WhatsApp’s desktop app won’t need your mobile phone’s connection

This new desktop version of WhatsApp will work even when your phone is off!

WhatsApp on laptop with a wavy background

There has been a desktop version of WhatsApp since 2015 when the messaging app released WhatsApp web. On its own, WhatsApp web works well as a PC version of the Facebook-owned app. It looks similar to the mobile app and has much the same feature set, although you can’t make voice or video calls from WhatsApp Web. It is so handy that, thanks to this neat Softonic tutorial, I often use WhatsApp Web as my go-to solution for sending files and photos quickly, easily, and securely from my phone to my PC and vice versa.

There is one catch, however, when it comes to WhatsApp Web and that is that it doesn’t work unless you link it to your phone. Once your phone is linked, you’ll be able to use WhatsApp Web as long as your phone is connected to the internet, even if you don’t have it with you. Without that connection though, WhatsApp Web is useless. All you’ll get is a page asking you to link your phone. It has now come out though, that this might be about to change.

New WhatsApp web will work even when your phone is off

The UWP is the Universal Windows platform. When an app is developed for the UWP it will work on Windows 10, Windows Phone, Xbox, and other Microsoft platforms like HoloLens. According to the ever-reliable WhatsApp tipsters over at WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is currently working on a new UWP version of WhatsApp. This means that there might soon be a version of WhatsApp that you can download and install officially on your Xbox.

The really exciting news about this latest development, however, is relating to the app itself and not just its platforms. The leak says that the new WhatsApp UWP app will work even when the user’s phone is switched off. This means the UWP version of WhatsApp will enjoy its own independent connection to the WhatsApp servers. If you’ve had your phone die, and let’s be honest that has happened to all of us, then you’ll know just how useful this could be. At the moment, whenever your phone has battery or not, you can’t send or receive WhatsApp messages. It is as simple as that.

Wrapping up

This move pushes WhatsApp towards a more internet-focused messaging service that you can use on your phone. There are lots of questions that will need answering as the UWP app moves along the development path, including how many active connections a single account will be able to have at the same time. Scrolling down through all of the Twitter comments celebrating this latest development, however, finds another pressing question that could change WhatsApp fundamentally. When the UWP version of WhatsApp is released, will you even need a phone or phone number to use it?

How to improve Skyrim combat without mods

Are you still immersed in the world of Skyrim? Follow these tips to enhance your experience!

SKyrim

Skyrim is not a very friendly place. There’s scheming vampire lords, vicious bears that will maul you to pieces, a civil war raging across the land, werewolves, and of course the looming threat that a dragon could swoop down and barbecue you just because he’s bored. Suffice it to say that combat is a huge cornerstone of Elder Scrolls V, and eight years after the game’s original release, it’s starting to feel a bit stale. If you look around, though, there are actually a number of ways to revitalize battle in Skyrim:

Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition Download ►
9

There are plenty of mods to improve Skyrim’s visuals, restore cut content, fix bugs, or make new dungeons, homes, and followers. However, exploring all these new crypts and caves is still going to feel tiresome if your fighting is restricted to what Bethesda offered back in 2011, and one of the largest contributing factors to that lack of spice is that at higher levels you’re likely not changing your style, armor, weapons, or appearances anymore, and your offensive spells cap at a certain damage.

Skyrim steel warhammer vampire Whiterun combat
Attack 1: Swing your sword. Attack 2: Swing it harder. There is no third attack.

There is a “best weapon” in Skyrim

Whether you’re an Orc wielding a greatsword, a Wood Elf aiming with a bow, or a Redguard dual-wielding axes, the problem with late-game martial characters is that once you’ve smithed a set of Daedric armor or forged a Dragonbone dagger you have zero reasons to go back to steel, Elven, or bonemold. That means that in order to maximize your defense score you’ll donning the same weapons and armor. Every time. Why would you not?

Skyrim armor dragonscale
This is the best armor. Prepare to never take it off.

The same goes for perks – if you’re a pure mage class, all you’ve really got for combat is the frost, fire, and shock spells of the Destruction tree. Once you buy the most damaging spell (Incinerate, Thunderbolt, or Icy Spear), Dual Casting, and a couple of perks to buff the damage (Augmented Flames, Frost, or Shock) you’ve reached your damage cap and probably won’t be casting the weaker versions of these spells ever again. By your second or third mage playthrough, you’ll probably be tired of them. The same goes for that Orc with a greatsword – you’re probably going to sink the same three points into the stacking Deep Wounds perk.

Skyrim Limbsplitter perks
See the stats for ‘bleed damage:’ The best material yields the best results.

1. There is no best weapon in Skyrim

Remember when we said there was the best weapon in Skyrim? Statistically speaking, this is true. Here’s the flip side: Different weapons and spells serve a different purpose. Even if you just play a one-handed specialist there’s still some variation you can get by using different types of one-handed weapons. Don’t just stick with the sword because that’s the most damaging weapon you’ve found. There’s a use for each one:

Skyrim Khajiit dual wield scimitars
Swords are fast and can deal critical damage, but are weaker than maces and axes.

Sword

Swords have a (10%-20%) chance to deal critical damage to targets, eventually boosting up to +50% crit damage. Since swords also boast a higher swing speed than axes and maces, that means you’re going for multiple fast strikes with the chance that one of them will score a critical. Dual-wielding (or using the dual-wielding exploit with a sword and dagger) doubles your chances even more. Try enchanting your blades with this in mind for a plethora of clever combinations.

Dagger

If faster swings per second make you happy, then daggers are your best bet. While they’ll always deal less damage than a sword, ax, or mace, if you properly smith or enchant it, it can hold its own, particularly if the enchantment does high damage. Appropriately, the dagger is also a great weapon of choice for the rogue classes; get the Assassin’s Blade perk and performing a sneak attack with a dagger will deal 15x the damage!

Ax

Axes are the awkward middle child of the martial weapons family, swinging slower than swords and daggers, and dealing less damage than maces. What’s the draw, then? Axes deal bleed damage, which is likely the most underrated, undervalued damage type in the game. Bleed effects cannot be absorbed or resisted in any way, and every rank of the respective perks will bump the magnitude and duration of bleeding damage dealt by weapons (the material of which is another factor). Bleed does DPS, and the effects stack with other DPS implements in the game, such as poison, fire, or Absorb Health. If you’re good at enchanting or concocting poisons, the ax can be a formidable weapon indeed.

Mace/hammer

Last but not least, you’ve got the blunt weapons – the martial bad boys; the heavy hitters of Skyrim. While they’re slower to hit with, these massive bludgeon tools always deal more damage than any other weapon in an even encounter. Better still, they can ignore 25%-75% of armor, cutting right through whatever damage resistance your enemy has. This makes a warhammer a deadly tool against bandit chiefs, Falmer warmongers, Dwemer automatons, or any armored foe who dares step in your way.

Skyrim dual mace sword
Ride a dragon with this build and feel like the Witch-King.

Don’t limit yourself to one weapon type. Carry one of each. Use maces on armored foes, and use a battle-ax when you have poisons available. Pull out a dagger when it’s time to sneak, and dual-wield swords when you’re banking on a critical strike for massive damage!

2. Switch up your elemental damage

Similarly, mages should opt away from specializing in just one type of offensive spell. Fire, frost, and shock all have their time and place, and switching between them will both make combat more visually exciting and keep you alive longer.

Skyrim destruction magic
Fire is great, but when is shock smarter?

Fire

Fire is the most commonly used spell type for Skyrim mages and that’s because it’s awesome. Burn an enemy and they’ll take more damage while on fire. What that means, then, is that if you have fire in your left hand and a melee weapon in your right, you’ll do more damage to the target per hit as long as you keep them lit up. This makes it a great choice for when you’re trying to maximize stackable DPS (like the aforementioned poisoned ax). Fire’s also a great choice when you’re fighting through the many, many Draugr crypts.

Frost

Frost is the squishy mage’s best friend. The main reason for this is that frost spells do half their damage value to an opponent’s stamina level. This does two things: First, it means melee opponents can’t keep slamming you with power attacks. Second (and more importantly) it means they are slowed. A slow bandit chief whose stamina bar is depleted is way less scary than one charging at you with a battle-ax – even if he is on fire. Frost spells are best used against humanoid opponents, but using them against Draugr or Dwemer robots should be avoided. As a unique quirk, frost enchantments are 25% stronger on anything made of Stalhrim!

Shock

Resisting shock damage in Skyrim is very rare. As such, you’ll probably do more damage with shock spells than with fire or frost. While frost spells deal half their damage value to an opponent’s stamina pool, shock spells do the same to their magicka, making lightning a great choice when you’re up against enemy spellcasters. It doesn’t matter how powerful a mage’s spell is if they don’t have enough magicka to cast it! It also means they won’t be able to block with wards, or do the ever-so-annoying strategy of running away at the last second to cast a healing spell. Lastly, shock spells are the easiest to hit with, as the blast has no travel time. Enemies will have a much harder time dodging Thunderbolt than Icy Spear.

3. Destruction magic is more than just projectiles

If you’re playing a mage, once you get Dual Casting with Impact, it’s easy to forget that there are any Destruction spells other than Thunderbolt, Icy Spear, and Incinerate. While these will probably still remain the cornerstone of your offense, there are other tools in your Destruction arsenal you may have abandoned: Cloak spells, Wall spells, and Runes.

Skyrim dual scimitar Miraak robes lightning storm
A build like this will slaughter enemy mages.

Cloak

The biggest thing to remember about Destruction cloak spells is that they still boast the same elemental effects that we brought up earlier. If you’re playing a warrior, try throwing on a Flame Cloak to increase the damage of your hits! Use a Lightning Cloak to deter mages. A Frost Cloak can sap away the stamina of enemy warriors, leaving them vulnerable to attack and stagger.

Wall

Remember back at the start of the game when all you had was a Flames spell? Wall of Fire is like an upgraded version of that spell. You don’t even have to be directly attacking enemies for Wall spells to wreak havoc on crowds of enemies. Use Frost Wall to deplete the stamina gauge of an entire room. Switch to projectiles or physical attacks while they’re all slowed. Mages who throw up a ward can’t block a Wall of Storms under their feet!

Rune

Runes are rarely used in Skyrim since most combat is initiated before you have much time to plan. The trick with runes is to get the Quiet Casting perk under Illusion. Dual Casting in Destruction means that you can lay down a more powerful trap (which can be placed quite far away with the Rune Master perk) that can catch enemies by surprise, all without them even knowing where you are. Lightning Rune can be an especially good method for sabotaging a mage’s magicka before you even engage them in combat.

4. Use non-combat trees to enhance your combat

The beauty of Skyrim’s RPG system is that many skill trees work in harmony, benefiting from perks you’ve put into other trees. You can always run a pure thief or warrior, but mixing and matching your talents actually breeds the best results in combat – particularly the more ‘hybrid’ trees like Enchanting or Alchemy. A high skill in Enchanting is essential for virtually any build you can think of, upping the resistances of your armor, augmenting damage, letting you regenerate magicka more quickly, or increasing your thief skills like Pickpocketing or Lockpicking.

Enchanting can add an extra layer of utility to any build

Alchemy is a versatile tool that’s often forgotten. Everyone gulps down health potions when they’re hurt, but what about those typically ignored Frenzy or Aversion potions you can coat your weapons with? Try putting Aversion to Fire on your enchanted fire ax (which does bleed damage), then attacking an enemy with it while barraging them with Flames from your other hand. If you want to get really radical, put away your ultra-damage ebony bow in favor of an old hunting bow that’ll wound instead of kill. Apply a Frenzy potion to the bow and fire a couple of arrows into a group of bandits. Watch them tear each other to pieces!

5. Play out of type

The last tip we have for shaking up your Skyrim experience is to tackle the quests in a different order. Most players start with the Main Quest and the Companions, but what happens if you join the Dark Brotherhood first? If you have DLC installed, what’s the final fight with Alduin like if you’re already a fully-powered Vampire Lord? Or try and get all the Black Books in the Dragonborn DLC before you start the Thieves’ Guild questline to really shake up what’s in your bag of tricks.

Playing a race other than your usual can also encourage you to try new approaches to old combat scenarios. If you’re used to playing the hardy Nord, try and mix things up by playing a nimble Khajiit, a powerful High Elf, or an expert Redguard pickpocket who dabbles in illusion. It’s an open world. Stop confining yourself to what’s comfortable!

If you don’t want to play Skyrim with mods, then changing your approach to combat is probably the best way to avoid repetitive gameplay. The stories and dungeons of Elder Scrolls V may always stay the same, but its RPG elements are whatever you make of them. You’re in control of the archetype you want to run, so try and approach old stories from wholly new angles.
