Are you a smartphone addict? Here’s the cure!

Has anyone ever told you that you spend way too much time on WhatsApp?

What about Facebook? Twitter? Instagram?

Maybe you just spend too much time fiddling around on your phone in general.

If you think so, we got a secret for you: you’re most likely right. Fear not! There is a cure for your app addiction. We found three different methods for you to try!

Turn off notifications

It’s a simple method, but it can work!

Disable each and every one of your notifications to keep you from being disturbed. Obviously, you shouldn’t remove notifications for ALL of your messaging services in case there’s an emergency.

It is proven that when you unlock your phone in response to a notification, you’re likely to open up other apps and waste more time on your phone.

To deactivate notifications in WhatsApp, go to “Settings” and then “Notifications. ” From there, uncheck the corresponding boxes and your phone will stop receiving alerts. This is also a great way to help conserve your data!

Set specific hours

Again, it sounds simple enough, but if you only allow yourself to use apps during certian hours of the day, you will find yourself using them less and less.

If you need to use WhatsApp for work, only using it during business hours can help out. Or, if you use it to talk to your friends and family after work, you can only all yourself to use it after dinner time.

Once you have a set schedule of use for all of your apps, your time management skills will get much sharper.

Quality Time

Having a smartphone addiction is nothing to be ashamed about. Just like if you have a substance abuse addiction, there is an app to help you with your app addiction.

Are you worried if you are too hooked on your Android? How much time do you invest in Facebook Messenger? What about in Candy Crush? Do not fear: here is Quality Time to help you … or to just confirm that you should divorce your smartphone.

Quality Time helps you see just how much time you’re devoting to using all of your apps. There is also an option to “take a break.” This means that you cannot use any apps while you take a break.

With this application, we can also control how many times we unlock our smartphone every day.

Finally, we can tell our phone that we do not want to receive notifications, that calls are blocked (at bedtime, for example) or restrict some apps.

Best free benchmarking software

Make sure your computer is running at peak performance with these benchmarking apps!

Benchmark

There are many reasons to benchmark your computer. Knowing the technical details of your computer can tell you what it’s capable of doing or if you can run a specific game. Regardless if you only use your computer for tasks such as playing games or editing photos or video, it’s important to know if your system is up to the job.

Here are the best free benchmarking programs all designed to test your computer’s performance.

Best free benchmarking software

Futuremark PC Mark 8

futuremark pc mark

Futuremark is famous for its graphics testing software, 3DMark. Designed to stress your graphics card using complex computations that translate to games, 3DMark is a great test to see how powerful your GPU is. Futuremark also makes PCMark, which is designed to test your computer’s capability in a more real-world setting.

PC Mark 8 focuses on your using your computer for everyday tasks like office suite productivity, web browsing, and video chat. The test simulates these situations and gives you the results. It supplies a breakdown, but these numbers may be a little confusing. You can also compare your scores to others who have tested their machines online.

While the full version of PC Mark has more advanced options, the free version still gives you a general idea of how well your computer runs. If you’re looking to benchmark your computer for gaming, then use 3D Mark.

Novabench

novabench

Novabench is another great option if you’re an advanced user. The test Novabench runs is relatively simple on the surface; it tests your RAM, CPU, GPU, and the hard drive. The score can be compared online and will give you a better idea of how good your computer is relative to others.

The problem with Novabench is that many of the test results are strings of numbers that might not mean much to a normal user. Even the results don’t tell you much and you’ll have to go online to compare results.

Novabench might be worth considering as a secondary test rather than your primary one to compare numbers like CPU tests or RAM speed rather than using the final Novabench score.

PassMark Performance Test

passmark performance test

Performance Test is the best benchmarking app for people who want to learn more about their computer, but don’t want to deal with arbitrary numbers. While the program gives you a benchmark number, it displays more relevant information on other tabs.

Performance Test also shows how your computer stacks up against others within the program. You will need to know a little about your computer like what kind of processor or graphics card it’s using for the results to make sense. But the amount of information that Performance Test supplies is a perfect start to begin tweaking your system.

I suggest using Performance Test if you’re looking to upgrade your computer because it’s great for figuring out what parts you need to upgrade your system. The program offers a free 30-day free trial before requiring a purchase.

SiSoft Sandra

sissoftware sandra

When I ran SiSoft Sandra to benchmark my laptop, I didn’t expect amazing results. My laptop is built for productivity and internet browsing but Sandra’s results compare performance between manufacturer’s laptops. This means it’s not a comparison to other users who may have built their own computers, but to off-the-shelf computers.

The problem with Sandra is that it gives too much information, even for a power user like me. It contains comprehensive tests that will cover just about everything and anything. The initial test for Sandra took around 30 minutes, during which I let the laptop run through every test without touching it.

If you’re using an ultrabook, there’s no reason to run SiSoft Sandra unless you want to be depressed. These computers aren’t meant to run games or resource-heavy apps. If you’re benchmarking a custom-built gaming machine, the results of your test might be really useful in deciding how to further optimize your system.

Fraps

fraps

If you play games, you probably already know about Fraps. The real-time frames per second (FPS) benchmarking tool is widely used to test how well games run. As opposed to other benchmarking software, there are no artificial tests. Fraps will log the current FPS in the game you’re running to give you an indicator of how well your system handles a particular game.

There are other tools like a screen capture short key (which doesn’t capture the FPS number) and a video capture tool so you can record gameplay to upload somewhere else. The program is light so it doesn’t use system resources so you don’t experience any lag when playing a game.

Fraps’ specialized benchmarking means that it’s not the best choice for someone who isn’t playing games on their computer. But if you’re a PC gamer, using Fraps can give you important statistics about your system.

Knowing the potential and real-time performance of your computer is important. It’s useful to test a new computer and see how well it can perform. Benchmarking the same computer, later on, will tell you if you should upgrade your components or buy a new computer. Benchmarking may seem overwhelming, but with the right program, you’ll be able to know exactly what you can expect from your computer.

How to choose the right anti-virus protection for your business

Avast, a leader in security software, supplies two different business security solutions: AVG Antivirus Business Edition and Avast Business Antivirus. Try them out!

While there are lots of anti-virus software programs on the market for individuals, when it comes to protecting your business, the choices tend to shrink. Avast, a leader in security software, believes that businesses should have all of the flexibility in anti-virus and hacker protection offered to individual consumers. This is why it supplies two different business security solutions, each further broken down into additional options that let business owners choose exactly the kind of coverage they need based on budget and requirements: AVG Antivirus Business Edition and Avast Business Antivirus.

AVG Antivirus Business Edition

As with all Avast products, AVG Antivirus Business Edition has world-class antivirus protection baked in, and is an ideal solution for larger businesses with multiple workstations.

The software employs cloud-based Real-Time Outbreak Detection to ensure that it is continuously updated and prepared to thwart the latest attacks whether they be from spam, viruses, hackers or malware – or through problematic email attachments or downloaded files. The program also includes a behavioral shield that looks for suspicious behavior that might be hiding in programs on devices across your network.

Additionally, AVG Antivirus Business Edition provides a WiFi inspector, a data shredder that overwrites files multiple times to permanently erase potentially sensitive data, and a sandbox, which isolates troublesome files in a safe, virtual environment for deeper analysis.

To add even more protection, AVG’s Internet Security Business Edition adds exchange server protection where your emails are scanned at the server level and you are protected from spam and phishing schemes before it even hits your network.

Avast Business Antivirus

If you’re a smaller business owner, Avast Business Antivirus lets you choose the exact level of protection you need to keep your operations safe and smooth, as it’s available in three versions: Business, Business Pro, and Business Pro Plus.

The base-level program offers the same file, web, email and behavioral shields as AVG Antivirus Business Edition, as well as the sandbox and WiFi inspector, but it does so in a lighter-weight program that takes up less resources on your network.

Stepping up to the Business Pro level adds the data shredder function, the exchange server email protection and SharePoint Server Protection – a scanner that monitors all files on your shared storage system to ensure that they stay malware free.

Moving on to the Pro Plus level adds four additional features including the ability to protect employees’ login details with a secure master password; VPN functionality; a browser cleanup function to remove cookies that contain personal data; and a webcam shield. These features are also not included in either of the two AVG Antivirus Business Edition products, so for true 360-degree protection for your business, Avast Business Antivirus Pro Plus really is the way to go.

All the software is compatible with Windows 10, 8 and 7 as well as Mac OS.

WhatsApp Pay coming later this year: Finally, we have an official announcement

WhatsApp will roll-out its new payment service in India by the end of this year.

If you’re interested in WhatsApp’s long =-awaited payment and cash transfer service, you’ll know that we’ve been following this story for a long time. From when it first arrived on the beta version of WhatsApp back in the summer of 2017 to the news last week that WhatsApp was almost ready to submit its report to the financial ombudsman in India, we’ve been keeping a very close eye on this one for a very long time. Well, finally we have some official news for you rather than hearsay, rumors, and anonymous comments.

WhatsApp will roll-out its new payment service in India by the end of this year

At an event in New Delhi, WhatsApp’s global head, Will Cathcart announced that, “to boost digital inclusion in India, we can launch the (Pay) service across the country later this year after meeting regulations.” The long road is finally coming to an end as WhatsApp Pay looks to have been approved for operation by the Reserve Bank of India.

After much delay then, WhatsApp Pay is finally ready to roll-out to India’s 400 million WhatsApp users. The plans for WhatsApp Pay go beyond India, however, with Reuters reporting Mark Zuckerberg as saying in a recent Facebook earnings conference call, “It’s a regulatory approval question in India at this point… We’re also working beyond India in a number of other countries and hope to have this rolled out to a large percent of the people who use WhatsApp within the next year.” It looks like WhatsApp Pay won’t only be confined to Indian WhatsApp users.

This one has been a long time brewing then, but it is clear that even though WhatsApp Pay is finally about to launch in India, there are still a lot of future developments to come with as Facebook seems to have some very grand plans for it. As soon as we learn more about a concrete launch date for WhatsApp’s latest service or about the other countries that can expect to see it, we’ll let you know. Make sure you stick with us for all the latest news and rumors about WhatsApp.

Top 5 leaders in Civilization VI

These Civ leaders can help you take over the world!

Civ 6

Civilization VI is the latest installment in Sid Meier’s award-winning series. Approachable for newbies but chock full of challenge and strategy for veterans, Civ 6 features dynamic diplomacy, a new “one unit per tile” gameplay, active research, expansive empires, and the Rise and Fall update has added a new loyalty system which completely alters the way combat is implemented.

There are universal tactics and techniques to increase your chances of succeeding in one of the five victory types, but much of what determines the angle at which you approach your success is decided from the very start – which civilization are you going to play as?

Different civilizations (or sometimes even different leaders within a given civilization) receive specific bonuses, abilities, units, and buildings that encourage a particular style of gameplay. Gilgamesh’s Sumeria, for example, has powerful war carts and he may declare war on anyone who is already at war with their allies and not suffer a warmonger penalty. Pedro II’s Brazil, on the other hand, has 20% Great People points refunded after recruiting a Great Person, making him better suited for a cultural victory.

With well over 30 different civilizations and leaders to choose from, it’s very difficult to ensure that all are treated fairly and equally, and that all are on an even playing ground. While Civ generally does a good job in making sure that no one is obscenely overpowered, there are undoubtedly some leaders who have an easier time at achieving victory than others. So without further ado, here’s our list of the top 5 leaders in Civilization VI:

Top 5 leaders in Civilization VI

5. Seondeok’s Korea

Civ 6

Introduced in the Rise and Fall DLC, Seondeok is one of the prime candidates for achieving a science victory. The biggest component to her success is her Seowon district, which can only be built after learning the Writing technology. As such, that should be your largest priority right off the bat.

Sid Meier's Civilization VI: Rise and Fall Download this leader and others here ►
10

Korea’s science district, the Seowon maximizes its technology boost the further away it is built from other districts. Plan its location carefully in order to maximize its potential and achieve its fullest benefit. This means that your best bet with Korea is to play “wide,” meaning you’ll quickly want to spread and settle new cities and districts upon starting the game, as that will ensure you have enough territory to spread your Seowon far enough apart. Surround them with other tiles like farms or mines, dropping your other districts elsewhere on the map.

As if that wasn’t enough, Seondeok’s Hwarang leader bonus provides her cities a 10% science and culture boost if they have an established Governor. Because of this, you’d be wise to split your focus evenly between technology and culture, as a high culture generation will attract Governors faster, and you’ll want to try and appoint one for each city.

4. Qin Shi Huang’s China

Civ 6

When it comes to culture, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better civilization than China. Like Egypt, China focuses on constructing wonders quickly and often, but of the two civs, China’s Great Wall and Crouching Tiger Cannon make it the superior for defensive playing (“turtling”).

Additionally, Chinese builders receive an additional use and can boost construction when erecting ancient or classical wonders. This essentially guarantees China first dibs when it comes to building the first wonders in the game, and having a wonder of your choice so early on can serve as a beacon for whatever victory type you like. The game’s early wonders are arguably the most useful, given that they take comparatively longer to build and you’re not bolstering other early-game necessities in order to spend the production on them.

Civ 6

Lastly, China’s Great Wall is one of their coolest features. Unlike its previous civ games where the Great Wall was a wonder, Civ VI has made it a unique tile improvement only usable by the Chinese. Connected segments of the Great Wall will provide Tourism, Gold, and extra defense for all your warriors, meaning that the larger your wall, the more use you’ll be able to get out of it. Combine that with the Crouching Tiger Cannon that does not need specific Resources to produce, and you have a mighty civ indeed.

3. Barbarossa’s Germany

Civ 6

Fast, efficient, and brutal, Germany is a prime candidate for both tech and domination. While his domination may not match the strength of a few of the other civs in the early game, he more than makes up for it later on with his u-boats, naval combat, and extremely high production rates.

Civ 6

Barbarossa’s Hansa district replaces the default Industrial Zone and has a +1 production for each adjacent resource – including the flat +1 bonus of the default industrial zone. The Hansa is also cheaper, costing 50% of industrial zone AND grants an additional +2 production if it’s adjacent to a commercial hub. Lastly, the Hansa will also give two production to any strategic resource tiles next to it. Playing “tall” with Germany (fewer districts and cities, but having them very powerful) is the way to go.

With domination, Germany’s best strategy is to conquer city-states and to do it early on in the match. This both allows for space and new territory all the faster and also ensures that you’re getting the most out of Barbarossa’s Holy Roman Emperor leader bonus, which gives a +7 combat strength bonus whenever attacking city-states. Since this is a flat bonus that won’t increase as you reach the mid-late game, you’ll be getting the most bang for your buck if you make the attack early. Lastly, Germany also receives an additional Military Policy slot, which can dramatically increase his power or versatility in combat with other civs later on.

2. Tomyris’ Scythia

Civ 6

Tomyris is absolutely unmatched when it comes to combat in Civ 6, making a domination victory very easy for Scythia. Killer of Cyrus is one of the strongest leader bonuses in the game, granting all Scythia units the ability to heal 50 points after killing an enemy unit, and additionally providing a +5 combat strength whenever they attack a wounded unit. The combination of those two combat elements means that Tomarys can quickly pull off a victory with one or two units while another civ would take longer and spend more units. It also means Scythia can quickly advance upon other players, drawing closer to their capital before they have time to regroup and make more units.

What makes this combat strength so useful is that it does not pertain to any one specific unit or era, but lasts you from start to finish. Whether you’re attacking with pikes, rifles, or army tanks you’ll always do bonus damage to wounded units and heal after killing them. That said, the best strategy is still to overwhelm with Saka Horse Archers early on in the match, as they are tougher to kill than most and can be produced quickly in great numbers. Half a dozen Saka Archers will probably be all you’ll need until mid-game.

Check out this video to see an in-depth explanation of what makes Tomyris’ Scythia so deadly, as well as an explanation of why it trumps so many other civilizations, particularly when playing online.

The reason we didn’t have Scythia as our number one is because they can get halted in their tracks by Sumeria and especially Mongolia. Genghis Khan can capture defeated horses, adding them to his own numbers, which effectively destroys Scythia right off the bat. If you spawn near Scythia as any other civ, though … Say your prayers.

1. Peter’s Russia

Civ 6

It was a tough call, but our top pick has to go to Peter. While the other civs on our list have their specializations, Russia can pretty much do it all. Their Cossack horsemen are some of the most useful attacking units in the game, their Lavra district is immensely powerful at generating culture and territory, their Mother Russia makes them adept at acquiring faith, and the Grand Embassy bonus they begin the game with affords them a boost to their science too.

Civ 6

Stronger than typical cavalry, Russia’s Cossack horsemen are devastating due to their ability to move after attacking. This makes them excellent at harassing your enemies and helps them to survive longer than other units. Much like Scythia’s Saka Horses, the Cossack’s likelihood of survival means they will cost you less maintenance and gain extra experience. On top of that, their speed allows them to weave in and out of danger, making them especially capable of dispatching slower opponents, even late into the game.

The Russian replacement for the Holy Site is the Lavra, and it’s what brings the entire Civ up to the next level. When you expend a Great Person in a city that has a Lavra in it, it will add an additional tile to Russia’s culture border – no questions, no restrictions. Since culture is what generates more Great People, you’re effectively creating a loop where you expend a Great Person to gain culture, to get you more Great People. Not to mention that when you expend a Great Person you gain a boost or ability.

If you think this sounds too powerful, you’re not the only one!

Lastly, the expanded borders Russia receives upon expending a Great Person will help them more than it would most other civs. If their expanded borders include tundra tiles, which they likely will early in the game given their start bias, the tiles will provide Russia with additional Faith and Production, making them a strong candidate for all things science, military, and religion.

Marvel’s last chance to save the Fantastic Four

Can Marvel’s original superteam survive a third reboot?

Marvel shared a ton of news with us at Comic-Con last week: A handful of new TV series, some of the upcoming movies in Phase 4, and a bunch more. One promise that raised some eyebrows was the announcement of another Fantastic Four reboot.

Yes, another one.

We’ve had three movies with these guys in the past 15 years, and they were all pretty … well, they weren’t fantastic.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been ridiculously successful of late, even toppling long-standing box office giantAvatar“.

One of their more remarkable feats is time and again bringing long-forgotten characters into the glorious spotlight. Who could have foreseen the popularity of Iron Man over a decade ago? The same can even be said of the Avengers. How many people had even heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy before 2014 (seriously, comment below if you had; kudos to you)?

If you told a Marvel fan back in 2005 that the Guardians of the Galaxy would rake in more cash than the Fantastic Four, he’d laugh in your face through his vintage issue of Alpha Flight. That’s because the Fantastic Four weren’t a long-lost offshoot in the overlooked annals of comic book history – they were at the epicenter of the Marvel universe, and had tie-ins to virtually everything involved inside it.

Why the Fantastic Four are so important

Fantastic Four Jack Kirby
These guys have been on more adventures than anyone else in the Marvel Universe!

Historically the Fantastic Four were the group that propelled the Superhero genre into the modern era. It did so by capitalizing on what were, at the time, very atypical angles of narrative: Though they got their start in space, the problems they shared were very down-to-earth.

The four teammates did not get along like the members of the original Justice League; The Thing despised his monstrous appearance and wished he’d never gotten his super powers; and Reed Richards struggled with decidedly non-super problems – overspent budgets, stock market crashes, failures in his personal projects, and struggles to lead his team. Instead of an unapproachable hero figure, Lee and Kirby created a relatable family of misfits:

It was at this point (in 1961) that Stan Lee convinced Martin Goodman to rename the company Marvel, and the team really started finding their own voice. It’s sad to see such a flagship of comic book history fail to meet the mark again and again with a modern audience, and it would be a welcome change if Marvel were to redeem their golden four.

Fantastic Four
The Fantastic Four might be the most important team in the original Marvel comics

The Fantasic Four are also hugely important to several story arcs and characters that the MCU could tackle soon, most notably Galactus, Silver Surfer, Kang the Conqueror, the Negative Zone, Annihilus, and of course the infamous Doctor Doom. So it’s not just about Marvel’s fab four looking shiny on-screen, it’s about what it could mean for the direction of the cinematic universe on a macro level.

Marvel Galactus
Question: How do you go bigger than Thanos? Answer: Galactus.

Can Feige can finally fix the Fantastic Four?

That brings us to the big question: The Fantastic Four have been done before and it’s bombed every time. How can they be done better? When asked why the latest Fantastic Four did poorly at the box office, Stan Lee’s response was pretty legendary: “It was probably because I didn’t have a cameo in it,” he joked.

Unfortunately the MCU can’t rely on the same selling point that pushed the Fantastic Four comics to stardom, this notion that superheroes weren’t too dissimilar from us, or that they dealt with everyday problems; the MCU has already covered that in spades, and it wouldn’t make them stand out from characters like Hawkeye, Spider-Man, or Hulk.

So what can make this story work? First off, we’re all dying to see Doctor Doom, but maybe it’s best that we don’t – at least not right away. Spider-Man’s biggest villains are the Green Goblin and Doctor Octopus, and the MCU wisely chose to veer away from them in favor of the less famous, less scary Vulture and Mysterio (both of whom they did really well). Instead they might be better off focusing on the Skrull, Terrax, or Annihilus, the latter two being characters we’ve never seen on film before.

Fantastic Four Marvel Annihilus
Introduce the Negative Zone early, and bring in Annihilus as their first big villain!

Besides picking the right villain, it’s also important that the film tell the right story. We don’t need another origin story. Please. We didn’t need one for Spider-Man, we didn’t need one for Black Panther, and we don’t need one here.

Instead, focus on the family dynamic that made the team likable to begin with, and then pick a conflict for them to face together. The Negative Zone is an especially powerful plot thread that could have a huge impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and a Fantastic Four reboot is the best chance to introduce it in a big way.

We’re anxious to see how Marvel and Feige plan to handle the Fantastic Four, but tbh we’re still biting our nails; we’ve been burned three times. Let us know in the comments below if you agree with our points, and what you’d like to see the company do with the Fantastic Four!

Google Photos now has over 1 billion users and a new younger sibling

Photos becomes one of 9 Google apps to have over 1 billion users and the Photos team has just launched Gallery Go to offer their services to owners of more modest devices.

Google Photos is one of the best, if not the best photo organizing program out there. Add that it is free and that it comes pre-loaded on every Android device and you might think that having 1 billion users isn’t that big of a deal. It wasn’t that long ago that Google Chrome logged its 5 billionth download after all.

The truth is though, that Google Photos’ success was a given as it was originally designed to bolster Google’s ill-fated social network Google+. An unmitigated failure, that risible misstep is no more, with Google having pulled the plug earlier this year. Photos, however, is here to stay and it could be argued it has seamlessly facilitated our shift towards a world where we take photos first and ask questions later.

Photos becomes one of 9 Google apps to have over 1 billion users

Google Photos on an Android phone

Reaching one billion downloads is a big deal then but, unsurprisingly, this isn’t Google’s first rodeo. Photos is actually the ninth Google product to clock such a huge number of active users.

The other 8 Google products to make it to the 1 billion club are Android, Chrome, Gmail, Google Drive, Google Maps, the Google Play Store, YouTube, and Google Search. Even with failures like Google+ in  recent memory, clearly, Google knows a thing or two about internet success.

Despite its connection to a doomed product, however, and even in such lofty company as its Google products brothers and sisters, Photos has managed to show itself to be something quite special indeed.

Google Photos Download Google Photos
7

One marker for its success is the speed of its uptake. Photos first hit the scene around four years ago in 2015. It took only five months before Photos had 100 million users and had reached 500 million just a year and a half later.

Fast Company has pointed out just how quickly Photos has been adopted by so many people: “Gmail took a dozen years to hit a billion users; Facebook and Instagram, about eight years apiece.” Google Photos hit the 1 billion user mark in half the time it took Facebook and Instagram to do the same.

The Photos team doesn’t seem content with that rapid rate of expansion either. They want more users and they want them as quickly as possible. Photos has had and still has a fast but steady uptake of new users. It had 500 million users after two years and 1 billion after four. You’d expect 2 billion users in eight years then, but that number might rise quicker due to the latest announcement from the Photos team.

Google has launched Gallery Go, a new lightweight and offline version of Photos

Yesterday, the Google Photos team announced the release of Gallery Go. Gallery Go joins the ranks of Google other “Go” apps, designed for owners of smartphones with more modest feature sets. If your phone doesn’t have a lot of processing power or RAM, and your connection speeds or data package is limited, you’ll likely have some of Google’s Go apps on your phone.

These apps include Gmail Go, YouTube Go, Maps Go, and Files Go and there is now a Go alternative for Photos. Launched at Google for Nigeria, Gallery Go is designed to work offline meaning Gallery Go photos aren’t automatically backed up to the cloud. Gallery Go still uses Google’s machine learning algorithms, however, to automatically organize photos, but it only does so with the photos that are stored on the phone locally or on an SD card.

As well as offline machine learning algorithms, Gallery Go is also able to pack in some simple editing tools. The Google blog post on the launch of Gallery Go describes them like this, “With Gallery Go it’s easy to get great looking photos in just a few taps. [You can] Use auto enhance… for instant fixes. You can also choose from a variety of filters to get a new look, and easily rotate and crop, so your photo looks just right.”

Often these basic editing tools are all you need, so putting them into the lighter version of Photos means a lot more people will have access to the photo editing tools they need.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Gallery Go, and indeed all of the Google Go apps, is its size. Google has managed to squeeze in offline AI algorithms, a sleek photo library, and photo-editing tools into a package of only 10 MB.

As well as working well on less powerful smartphones, Gallery Go is also designed to not take up much hard drive space as often these less powerful phones only have 4 GB of space, if not even less. This is why it also important that Gallery Go works with photos stored on SD cards too.

Launching Gallery Go in Nigeria gives a good indication of what the Photos’ team plan is. With Photos being a powerful app that works best when it is always connected to the internet, it has alienated huge swathes of Android users around the world. Most Android users have more modest handsets and limited access to the internet. Gallery Go puts the power of Photos in their hands.

If Gallery Go can catch on in places like Nigeria, other countries in Africa, and across the continents of South America and Asia, there is a good chance the Photos team will notch up its 2 billionth user in much quicker time than it took to get to 1 billion.

Gallery Go is available now on the Google Play store and will work on all Android devices running Android 8.1 (Oreo) or higher.

New Tinder feature aimed to protect LGBTQ users

Tinder will hide LGBTQ user profiles when they visit countries that outlaw same-sex relationships.

Tinder

This new feature from Tinder could help you out if you’re swiping while on vacation.

Tinder will soon alert their LGBTQ users if they are using the app while in a country that criminalizes same-sex relationships. This new feature is called Traveler Alert, and it is expected to roll out in a future update, according to an announcement from Tinder.

Unfortunately, police in these countries often use dating apps like Tinder to find same-sex couples and prosecute them, according to Tinder. This move will hopefully save LGBTQ users from this cruel fate.

Along with alerting users, Tinder will automatically remove their profile from the app while they are in the country. However, users will be able to make their profiles visible if they wish to take the risk.

(function(d,s,id){var js,fjs=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];if(d.getElementById(id))return;js=d.createElement(s);js.id=id;js.src=’https://embed.playbuzz.com/sdk.js’;fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js,fjs);}(document,’script’,’playbuzz-sdk’));

Tinder now allows users to identify their sexual preferences by choosing three of nine categories. They are:
  •  Straight
  • Gay
  • Lesbian
  • Bisexual
  • Asexual
  • Demisexual
  • Pansexual
  • Queer
  • Questioning

These new moves from Tinder are making the app much safer for LGBTQ users, and much for inviting as well.

In the wild world of dating, you are taking enough of a risk just by putting yourself out there, so it’s a good thing that Tinder is putting in more precautions to keep you safe.
